Communist Countries

Good point Nut

It doesn't bother me if they choose to set up in a communist country. Those people deserve a little Disney magic, just as much as the rest of us.

Disney, like any other free-enterprise company, will build/set up shop wherever they feel they can turn a dollar. It's the American way! We could go to Beijing and get sweet-and-sour turkey legs.

My wife went back to shcool to finish her degree last year, and I guess the University sold all of her student info to marketing companies. Anyway she gets junkmail sent to her from the Army trying to recruit her. (she's 31 and she's 8 months pregnant) They sent her a little radio with headphones last week, and guess where it was made......... China If the U.S. Army has items made for them by communists then I guess Disney can.

I remember that the former East Germany, and several Soviet States, during their infancy, actually banned Mickey Mouse,

Those where different times, the Cold War was on and Mickey was/is an American Symbol, but everything is different these days. Everybody love the Mouse now, how could you not, he's so cute.

Although Hong Kong is China now, the level of life that people in Hong Kong have, is better than the one they have in the People´s Republic of China -at least according to my experiences through roommates and friends from there- and the majority was not exactly happy to go back to being part of China. I don´t see the problem in building the park there. As someone said: business is business. :animwink:

The more US companies (like Disney) become deeply involved in the Chinese economy, the harder it will be for China's communist government to survive. Maybe Disney can be a part of the downfall of communism!

Well said! I got relatives over there and they've told me it's the same as before. China didn't really do anything but take back HK. They wouldn't dare tinker with HK. If anything they're back with China, yay...but now they're under communist rule, DOH! Thank goodness nothing drastic was done to HK, it's still the 'same'.

Communist philosophy is not inherently evil, but the way it is practiced in this world leaves much to be desired.

i might be wrong here but hong kong was under british rule for a long time until just a couple of years ago(back to china).during that time hong kong as been very robust economicaly and culturally as well.even though it is now part of china it still has alot of outside influence from us and britain and all over.i wouldnt worry about china with thier nukes-we are more likely to be nuked by a third world country in the middle east.like russia i cant see china being "red" forever.as far as communism being evil-marxism or the origional communism was not meant to be the way it is now.it is the evil leaders who make it bad-just look at the russian revolution-stalin and lenin were having people killed left and right, viet kong tortured people, castro is the anti christ, and the communists in south and central america were known for killing, raping, and torture as well.it wasnt meant to be that way -in a perfect world with out greedy people it might work-dont get me wrong im not a "commie" - spending 4 years in the air force we just got to learn about our adversaries.

Someone please correct me if I have this totally wrong but isn’t it communism vs. capitalism? I ask this because it seems like people are confusing it as communism vs. democracy. If I remember from the old days back in school, communism is an economic system as apposed to imperialism or fascism which would be anti-democracies.

We fought a long cold war with the Soviet Union and although we won, where did it really get us? We crushed one of the world’s largest countries that ultimately could not keep up with us and as a result, they have broken into a bunch of smaller, less stable countries most of which have nuclear weapons and many of which we are now financially subsidizing. Did we really win? Do we really want to do this with another country all over again?

Instead of another cold war, I think companies like Disney going in offer a more peaceful and productive solution. Think about it. Disney is a complete representation of absolutely everything that makes up western values starting with the way the company operates, right down to the company’s public image of positive western social values. The fact that the country of China even wants them (and they really, really do) is significant. The fact that they didn’t totally plunder Hong Kong when they regained control is significant. Changes of this scale are slow but they are happening and the seeds of change have to start somewhere. Personally, I think Walt would be proud that the company he started was helping bring peace and stability to the world and Roy would be happy to know it is being done at a profit! ;)

also something to think about there are and were lots of people in communist countries that really hate communism-they are just to scared to stand up and say it or they have been brainwashed by propaganda.this is evident when the berlin wall came down how thousands of so called "commies"were happy to see the fall of the red occupation.a good freind of mine who is now thankfully a us citizen was from russia-soviet union and was in the soviet navy and every ship or sub came with a"political officer" whos main job was to basically push anti american propoganda to the crew.in russia everyone had the join the service at 18 and serve for at least 2 years-the point im making is that im sure the people of china will embrace disney with open arms-only a the leaders in control in red countries really have issues with americans
