Hey,

Wanted to know if anyone will be running in your city in the Commitment Day 5K, that New Year's resolution thing. I was going to run anyway on Jan. 1, but I noticed the 5K will be in Memphis and is right down the street from me downtown.

Including Memphis, there are 29 cities across United States that will host the Commitment Day 5K.

Anyone signed up to run in your city? I just signed up. After running a Turkey Trot 4 miler, I'm also signed up to run the Memphis Marathon 5K on Dec 1, a unique 4K run through holiday lights at a nearby park in mid-December (night run!), and now the New Year's Day 5K.

We don't have the Commitment Day 5K where I live but I do plan on running on the 1st. Nothing like a nice run to strenghten my resolve for running! I would love to work up to a marathon run in 2013!

Cleveland is on the list, but I have never heard about this. I like how the weather policy says “rain or shine”, what about snow? :p The weather is too unpredictable at this time of year to commit to something like this. I’ll stick to my neighborhood streets and the treadmill if I need to resort to it.

I haven't signed up for a run like this, but I generally do like to go for a nice long run (by my standards) on New Year's Day to start the year off right.

Ran the Commitment Day 5K Tuesday morning in just under 30 minutes. Run wasn't timed. It was a "fun run" and I did see I slipped in just under 30 min, say 29:58, 29:59. Chilly to start - 41-42F and overcast, but by end of run and my walk back to my apartment the winds kicked in. I was in shorts, but it felt like 35F. This is me and Wendy, my coworker at the TV station, who did not run but cheered me and some 400 others on.

Memphis race started and finished next to FedExForum across street from Beale Street, wound its way through the South Main Arts District, down along the Mississippi River, up a HILL, up a street bordering Beale Street. Nice run.

You can check out me and some 400K others who ran the Commitment Day 5K in 29 other cities across America. Great photo galleries of all the fun runs.

I have to get back into running, but not on Jan 1. Come the end of Jan, I should have a lot more time once again.

Anyway, I have never seen a Committment Day run, but there is a "Hangover Run" that goes on around here every Jan 1. It was actualy postponed two years ago because the parks department (it is in a park) declared it unsafe - too much ice on the running paths. It's a nice race (depending on the weather) and I do like the long sleeved T-shirt they give out.

Dave, Commitment Day was promoted in 2012 and ran for the first time 11 days ago on New Year's Day 2013. I hear "Lifetime Fitness" is looking forward to 2014.

I've heard of the Hangover 5K before but never ran it. There was a New Year's Eve at midnight 5K to ring in the new year last year in Ohio where I used to live, but the weather was not nice. Still, the local running group still puts it on at midnight and then follows that with the Hangover 5K about 9-10 hours later. Two 5Ks in less than 12 hours.

Good luck in restarting at the end of the month.

Are you talking about the Hangover run put on by the Central Jersey Road Runners Clun (or something like that).

It is a fun race, but the course is a little odd. It is a big oval in a park. You run two laps clockwise, the enter city streets and run around a block, then you reenter the oval but run your last lap in the other direction (counterclockwise)

At times there are people running in both directions on the oval (you stay to the right). People get confused and have to be directed where to go.
