Oh Lord...that is so sad, and touching, and well....I'm not really sure how to vocalize what I feel - that poor child, and there are so many other like her. It's really just horrible.

Talsonic, I think pretty much everyone was going to lower the flag anyway...I don't think it took a Presidential proclamation to get everyone to show respect

I might be wrong, but I think it's illegal to fly a flag at half mast unless there is a governmental proclamation to do so. Dang, I used two big words in the same sentence!!:hammer:

 They were very good big words!

As for the proclamation about the flag, I'm not really sure. DH says its not illegal to do it w/o one, but he's not home yet for me to ask him the details :( As soon as he is I will ask him and get back to this though!

Oh, but it does require a proclamation from the President! It would be very disrespectful to lower the USA national emblem to half-staff without proper permission and authority. The national flag belongs to all citizens of the USA and I think it deserves our respect. The unity of our nation is symbolized and represented by the flag. I have seen many occasions where the flag was lowered to half-staff without proper authorization. As an example, when Walt Disney died, Disneyland lowered its USA flag to half-staff. That was an insult to our national emblem! Protocol is there for a good reason and should not be ignored! I have seen many instances where local communities have lowered their flags "in respect" for slain police officers or firefighters. In reality, these improper displays of the flag are disrespectful of both the flag and the departed. It is still my hope that we as citizens of the USA will unite as a result of the 9/11 disaster and realize that the flag represents us all and should not be used as a cheap tool to invoke gratuitous sentiment.
