That is now a market position they are pursuing, not control they are gaining. The tactics which would make this control cannot be pursued. This is far more about maintaining the status quo, keeping existing subscribers and fending off the FCC.
Remind Disney that this isn't about control the next time they go in to renegotiate the ESPN fees.

Actually it does unfortunately. Are you a Comcast subscriber with high speed and X1? My data usage went from 10 - 20 to over 300 once X1 was installed. Mobile devices were never used on the network. Only one desktop and X1. Any work I do from home is done on an entirely separate network installed by my employer. HD streaming(watching any channel in HD instead of the alternate SD channel) as they call it definitely applies to data usage. I have screenshots of my data activity I'll be happy to share if you'd like to see them. I work in IT and have for many many years. I wouldn't post it if it wasn't factual.
I'm a little confused by what you are saying. As a Xfinity/Comcast customer with an X-1 box, I am very familiar with the services they offer.

Are you saying that if you watch only HD channels you are being charged for going over a data usage? Or are you using the TV to go app? I stream online content from my phone constantly using wifi and have never been charged additional fees.

I was one of the orignal X1 customers, I requested the device the day it came on market, and I have never heard of any usage maximums watching your television.

I do have x1 at our beach house and I've done product development at the worlds largest networking company... Cisco. You might say I'm familiar with the concepts ;)

I'll look at our bill but we've never had an issue.

You still have not said where there is any control. The X1 is a cable box. More people using the X1 means that ESPN has more subscribers since those fees are based on subscription bundles. This plan working for Comcast is good for Disney. There is no scenario where this is good for Comcast and bad for Disney.

Comcast needs to buy Time Warner, the parent company of HBO. Then Universal owns Game of Thrones...and we now have our 4th gate- adults only, because in Westeros, Dorne, Winterfell, etc, we only drink wine. And there will be dragons. (so sorry, but I am totally ate up with GoT)

I am sure they would love to but the FTC would never go for it. I think we are just about done with the big mergers in the signal provider quarter.

While you're at it... remind Comcast that their cable service will soon find itself in massive free fall. Content creators, like Disney, have the most to gain in the next 10-15 years as how we receive content is reshaped (just spin-off ESPN already). One of Comcast's core businesses is in HUGE jeopardy. There wont be "cable" in 15 years.

Comcast bundling Netflix in their services has ZERO to do with Disney. Thinking this is any sort of move on Disney is a joke lmao.

This is the best thing I have read on a Disney message board. Period.

I'm in!!

How much does ESPN add to TWDC bottom line? Why "spin that off"?

IF it continues to lose subs at such fast pace a spin-off would be a good move in the next 3-5 years before it becomes more of a liability than an asset. But it appears Disney is making a great move and will soon be offering an ESPN "skinny bundle" which imo will save the brand.

This move promotes the notion of ESPN launching their own streaming service and allowing customers to dump Xfinity TV all together. Which they will do soon enough.

Also, Netflix inked a deal with Disney in 2014 worth hundreds of millions of dollars a year, giving Netflix the exclusive rights as the first provider to stream or air Disney, Lucasfilm, Marvel, and Pixar movies (which was previously Starz). I believe that deal takes effect in September of this year. If any move with Netflix was a power grab, that one was. Though it's still mutually beneficial for both parties.

Shares of Comcast, though, have been lower all day and didn't budge on the Netflix news
If this was "huge", as you put it, I think the stock would have budged.

That will not happen until ESPN has no choice. Right now ESPN is forced on just about every cable subscription. If that changes ESPN will get hit hard. The problem is if ESPN offers a streaming service then all the cable companies will have grounds to op out of Disney deals which force all or nothing Disney owned channels.

There is a lot more going then ESPN will put up a streaming web site.
I think you are undervaluing the importance of ESPN to said cable companies.

It is also official now in the Netflix policy to share your password with anyone. Good luck with that. That's like the law that it's illegal to coast down an incline while driving in certain US states.

Not really a partnership just simple a content provider trying to make a deal to get their product on the largest streaming platform. Netflix has become the provider with the most eyes but they are simply a distributor. Just a money maker for both companies.

Think you are reading to much into this whole deal.
This is not a content deal. The content is created by NBCUniversal and this deal would be with Comcast Cable.
