I saw that as well. However, for historical purposes, wouldn't they have recreated a headshot? And further, you with think that would be a PITA to change his shirt for every show.

Many people didn't pay attention in history class or maybe just figured the blood was dripping down from his head. Who knows.
Another reason might be the good old "suspension of disbelief". That sucker works every time.
