Christmas, New Year's and a birthday = 10 Days of Magic

So I'm finally getting around to writing this trip report after having been home for almost a month. I think the main reason I've been putting it off for so long is because we've been having some nice weather up here in the New York area and writing about our trip to Disney will make me wish for nicer weather and that we were still down there. Maybe another reason for putting it off is that we know we're probably not going down there for another year or two since we've got a lot going on this year (I'm becoming an uncle in a couple weeks and my brother and his wife live in California, so a good amount of the vacation budget is being allocated to those visits. Hey, I'll take my first niece over a trip to Disney, plus in a few years I'll be able to go out that way and take her to Disneyland).

Anyway, enough of that stuff no one cares about, if you hadn't read the trip report Alex (Lexi, my girlfriend) wrote before we went down there then here it is. If you don't want to read it that's fine, here's a quick rundown. We were in WDW for the Food and Wine Festival in early October 2010. We discussed going around the same time as soon as we got back from that trip (which there is a short TR for floating around this site somewhere) but Alex said she wanted to go down for Christmas, "Christmas time, yeah that's fine" I would agree, but no. She wanted Christmas day, New Year's and her birthday (January 2), so we booked that the day after Thanksgiving 2010. Waiting thirteen months just to leave for your trip is a nightmare that I'm sure some of you have experienced. The only reason I say it's a nightmare is because WHO WANTS TO WAIT THIRTEEN MONTHS TO GO TO DISNEY AFTER YOU'VE BOOKED THE TRIP! Anyway, multiple ADR changes and one hotel switch later it was finally Christmas Eve.

Day One - Packing, Flying, Checking In and Magic Kingdom

Alex and I couldn't be more different when it comes to packing, so after we each finished our respective families' Christmas Eve gatherings and we exchanged our gifts to one another (I got her a Nook Tablet which I ended up using more on the trip than her, I love crossword puzzles sue me) I sat patiently on the bed with my bags (having been packed for four days) while Alex figured out what she needed to pack and then finally stuff things into her suitcase and carry-ons (yeah carry-ons because the airline industry hasn't figured out that most women are smart enough to use their 'personal' bag as another carry-on, usually one that's larger than their actual carry-on mini-suitcase). Needless to say she was successful and both of our bags were surprisingly under weight (we thought they'd be closer to 50lbs, they were nearer 30), who'd have thunk it?

Did I mention that she finished packing at about 1.30am Christmas morning? Our flight was at 6am. We had to be at the airport by 4:30 (honestly if you think you need to be there two hours prior for a domestic flight something in your head is off, and don't tell me that it's because of how crazy the airport gets because our flight was leaving out of JFK). That's all well and good, I can operate on very low levels of sleep and when Alex gets excited for something I'm surprised she sleeps at all, she makes up for it big time the next few mornings, and this was Disney World, our trip that was thirteen months in the making. Our Christmas, New Year's and her birthday that we'd been looking forward to since each of those events the previous year, we could have stayed up all night and still had the energy for our first day in the parks. We didn't though, we got about three hours each and Alex slept the entire plane ride down, me not so much. I can't sleep on planes because I have a fear of flying, despite how much I do it (or am willing to do it).

We don't have any pictures of us waiting to board the plane or sitting on the plane or even of the plane. Our very first picture of our vacation is this somewhat blurry beaut:

IMG_0057.jpg

We were staying at the Caribbean Beach Resort so we were on our way to the Magical Express Bus. I think the best part about flying in on Christmas day is that absolutely no one was on any of the lines of the ME and our bus had only six other people on it (in total, not groups). We had a great bus driver as well, we told us some fun stories, pointed out all the alligators he could see and even slowed down so we could get this picture:

IMG_0060.jpg

Curious that the picture we got while we were in a moving vehicle is less blurry than the picture we took while standing still. This may be a trend for the trip.

Once we arrived at the hotel we thanked our driver very much AND TIPPED HIM (I know there seems to be some debate over whether or not to do this but you should, especially if he handles any of your bags, tells you stories or does anything nice, like drive you from the airport to your resort). Upon entering the Custom House we were in awe of the place, it was much bigger than the pictures we'd seen made it out to be, and the Christmas decorations were the icing on the cake. We were thrilled to find out that our room was ready considering it was 9:30am by the time all was said and done.

A Christmas decoration:

IMG_0063.jpg

We headed to our room, which luckily was about a ten minute walk from the Custom House to put our carry-on luggage down. We hadn't checked the weather before we left New York so we were pretty surprised by the humidity that morning, as it had rained earlier, and the fact that it was about 85 degrees. We took it in stride though seeing as how we were staying on

IMG_0070.jpg

in room number

IMG_0069.jpg

We were lucky enough to have a corner room (I think "lucky enough" is the proper term even though our blinds were closed shut the entire trip, we hate when people walk by and look in the room, it's creepy and we don't handle creepiness well) that was only about a five minute walk to the nearest bus stop. We lucked out with the buses, we felt, since our stop was the last before exiting the resort for MK and AK, and there were only four more stops after us before exiting for Epcot and MGM (I'm calling it MGM this entire trip report so if you're going to complain stop reading now, we spend a lot of time there), if I'm remembering correctly any way. Also, our room was close enough to the next bus stop that after all the long days/nights in the parks we could get off at the first stop in the resort (Martinique, I believe) and walk back, depending where we were coming from. If Martinique wasn't the first stop than Barbados was the third. Granted, yes, we're young (enough, mid-20's) but after spending countless hours walking around the parks there's no way we want to walk or be on a bus any longer than we have to be. I digress.

After sitting around the room and enjoying the AC for a little while and debating whether or not to wait for our checked luggage (it got there very quickly when we stayed at AS Movies last time) we decided enough was enough because we didn't want to risk waiting in the room for two hours (or more, as I've read in some TRs), plus it's not like we could go for a dip in the quiet or main pool since our bathing suits (henceforth to be referred to as 'trunks') were in our luggage. So we got off our butts

IMG_0067.jpg

(me being fancy on my butt) and headed to the bus stop for our ride over to the Magic Kingdom. A moment we had waited for for a long time (I could say thirteen months hundreds of times in this TR but it's annoying even me thinking about it).

We finally arrived at the Magic Kingdom after a quick fifteen minutes bus ride that felt like an hour since we hadn't been there in so long. After walking from the drop off point to the entrance we realized maybe we made a huge mistake. Once we got past bag check though (where I almost picked up a stroller and threw that a woman kept pushing into our ankles, if I'm not moving up and you're behind me, you're not moving up) we just had to find the right line to get in to get into the park and so Disney could have our biometric signatures. We got on the shortest line that had only one big group (about ten people) in front of us. Well this was absolutely the worst line we could've picked, not one of the people in the group spoke english and they all had something with their ticket where every other person had to go to the ticket counter which left every person after that arguing with the other. This took about twenty minutes but once past that we were in! We did it!

Here's our first view from inside any of the parks:

IMG_0072.jpg

Not quite the Castle but we loved the ornaments on the tree, we would later get more photos of those as our time progressed but for now we were just excited to be in the park. Even more excited when we saw this:

IMG_0074.jpg

There's really no comparison for seeing the Castle for the first time on your trip. As we walked down Main Street and it got closer and closer (we were actually towards the end, front depending on how you like it when we took that picture because the wreaths hanging from the buildings on Main St would've been in the way otherwise) the excitement grew and grew. It was either excitement or hunger since we hadn't really eaten anything except maybe half a bag of chips on the plane and those weren't very yummy any way. So we headed over to Pecos Bill's for our first meal of the trip, we loved this place so much the last time we went that we couldn't wait to get back there and here's what we ordered:

IMG_0075.jpg

Two deluxe cheeseburgers (I had been debating this for a long time, I should've gone with the taco bowl since I love tacos). That one in the back with the superfluous amount of onions is mine, I love onions. As much as I wanted to love this burger I just couldn't, just as last year the bun seemed stale and unfortunately the one major thing I noticed this time around was that the burger patty tasted overwhelmingly like it was a frozen patty (obviously it is, but it's a huge bummer when you can tell it's been frozen). At least the fries and cheese sauce were outstanding as they usually are. I can't fault Pecos Bill's too much though given the fact that it was around 12:30pm on Christmas Day and the place was absolutely mobbed, I guess I was just upset that that was my first foray into dining at Disney World this trip. I felt horrible for the staff working their though as it seemed no one knew where to walk, where to order or where to eat. The worst of it was that no one knew of any order to getting the fixins from the fixins bar. It's simple, start at the where the toppings are and work your way towards the middle where the napkins are. Easy, both sides of the fixins bar are the same. No rocket science there.

After Pecos Bills we decided that since we were close to Pirates we may as well take a spin. I never thought that this would be our first ride of the trip, we're more inclined to head towards Tomorrowland, but it's how things worked out this time around:

IMG_0076.jpg

Look at those clouds, nice. Beautiful weather once we got over the humidity on this day. We still love this ride, although for me ever since they geared it towards the film it's just not the same. I think it's because Johnny Depp bothers me, the unpatriotic bum. Anyway, I've filled my picture quota for the post, there is much more to come. I hope you like the pictures posted here because Alex bought herself a new camera before we took this trip and we took well over 1,500 photos (I won't post nearly that many). There will be more plenty more trip report to come, although the NHL All-Star game has priority today.

Awesome TR so far, AJ (it is AJ, right?).

The picture of you and Alex upon return to MK and then at the Wishes dessert party are great - you guys are the cutest.

Can't wait for moooore.
Kenzie

It is AJ, Artie Jim was a nickname a former coworker gave me that stuck. Thanks for the compliments, if you haven't done the dessert party I highly suggest it at least once.

Day 2 continued...

After enjoying the sounds of the Japanese drummers we continued on our stroll through the WS and see what the American Adventure had to offer us. Well it turns out we got there just in time to see the fife and drum crew (I don't know if that's what they're called, but that's what I'm calling them). We also caught a glimpse of the stage set up for the Candlelight Processional which was going for a few more nights of us being there. I'm not sure why we decided to take this picture:

IMG_0395.jpg

We find white Christmas trees extremely tacky (sorry if you own one, but they are). Having spent our childhood Christmases in Brooklyn we always knew someone with a white Christmas tree in his/her house and they always looked ridiculous (not sure if there was a reason that any one I knew with a white Christmas was Italian or not, I've got plenty of Italian in my blood but we definitely stayed away from those). White Christmas trees don't look like they're covered in snow, they look like they're plastic. That's my rant about white Christmas trees, here's a picture of some patriots:

IMG_0396.jpg

USA! USA! These guys were great, they sounded awesome and luckily for us there wasn't too many people there to watch so we were able to get right up there, or at least stand behind some people shorter than Alex (a rarity). I really enjoyed them at least, and since I'm writing the trip report and she isn't that's what counts (right? That's a joke).

We wanted to check out the shop and the stands they had set up that were selling ornaments and Christmas scenes, for whatever reason we didn't take any pictures of those. They had some cool stuff though, the village they were selling (piece by exorbitantly priced piece) was awesome. Santa's Village was sitting vacant, we didn't see a time board or anything (and honestly didn't want to be engulfed in trying to catch viewings so we left our time guides in the room the entire time we were down there). It would've been fun to see all the different Santa's, or at least all the different things the pavilions do for Christmas but oh well.

IMG_0397.jpg

There's a nice tree, eh? We also liked this little touch of American awesomeness thrown in with the decorations, although I couldn't for the life of me tell you where this was hanging from. Maybe from the top of the aforementioned stand selling the Christmas village.

IMG_0398.jpg

We wanted to check out the inside of the Fife and Drum, mostly to see the gingerbread house inside but also to check out the menu for a possible stop later in the week (although as I mentioned in my post about Japan I had no intentions of eating here). I was super excited for the gingerbread houses throughout WDW and this was the first we saw:

IMG_0400.jpg

We wanted to get a picture of the front (or back I guess) but there were tables as close to it as they could get and we didn't want to take a picture of it with people eating there (I'd hope for the same respect of my quick service meal as well thank you very much). I can't wait to make my own next year though!

Next up, Italia and Deutschland!

Alex has developed quite a liking for champagne over the past couple years (she also has an allergy where she can only where 14k gold earrings, I wish I was kidding, lucky me, right?) and we recently saw a show about Prosecco and she couldn't wait to try that as well. We figured no better place to get some than at the Italian pavilion, right? Did you know that real Prosecco, like champagne, can only be produced in certain regions of Italy? We did because we watched the show. Now you do too. Here's Alex's sampler of Prosecco from the Italian tasting room:

IMG_0403.jpg

We said it was great, I had a sip but I can't really tell the difference between good drinks made from grapes and bad drinks made from grapes. She was happy with it so I was happy. Here's the pretty lady with her drink hitching a ride with a few more crates of booze, don't drink and drive, get a rickshaw whenever possible:

IMG_0402.jpg

Italy is the one pavilion that we really remembered the shops from after our time in WDW the previous trip so we didn't need to spend too much time here, although we did want to look at the carnival masks again, despite their creepiness. Here are a few shots of the architecture of Italy:

IMG_0404.jpg

IMG_0405.jpg

IMG_0406.jpg

We always want to go up those stairs but will probably never get the chance. Any one ever been up there? Nice view? I bet there is.

Next up was Germany. Since the last time we were in Disney I've developed something of a love affair with German history and architecture, mostly Bavarian, so I enjoyed myself more so this time around. We really liked this little town, it made me feel like I was in the episode of the Twilight Zone where the two astronauts are on Mars or something and the one fines the village of tiny people and they build a life size statue of him... Anyway...

IMG_0407.jpg

IMG_0408.jpg

Model trains are pretty cool too, if I ever had the patience and money I'd probably own one. Actually, I probably wouldn't because I'd spend the money on more trips to Disney.

Hello biergarten and Karmel Kuche:

IMG_0409.jpg

The snacks in the caramel shop looked awesome but I didn't get anything. As much as a love caramel I always worry about it getting stuck to/in between my teeth. I had that fear instilled in me by an orthodontist at a young age, that jerk. Some day, but we actually didn't get too many snacks at all this time around. Whatever.

IMG_0410.jpg

Good thing for St. George up there, doing his thing, slaying dragons.

I was so excited to finally get the snack (here's a snack after I just said we hardly got any this trip) so we kept moving through but stopped at a photopass photographer first for a picture which turned into a full on photo shoot. He took some pretty good shots and some pretty bad ones. We have a ton of pictures on our photopass disc, I'll start posting them in a little bit after I finish writing the entries each day. Here's one of the many shots he took with Alex's camera:

IMG_0413.jpg

Alex also really enjoyed these flowers somewhere between Italy and Norway:

IMG_0414.jpg

At this point I was starting to get seriously hungry and it was bordering 3pm, my food was in Norway and there was no way I was stopping in China before I ate today. We've all seen it, and you'll see plenty more of it in this trip report but not today. We finally got into Norway and I finally ordered the school bread from the Kringla Bakeri. I'd been wanting to try this for quite some time and now was finally my chance:

IMG_0415.jpg

As any growing young man should drink I got myself a carton of whole milk (although it's probably only going to contribute to a growing waist line, I don't think I'm getting any taller). Here's my (probably not so) quick review. The cream filling inside and on top was really good, not overly sweet. The coconut was great, but I like coconut a lot. The dough itself was a bit stale. There it is, quick review. I enjoyed the school bread, but the staleness was unfortunate.

Well now that we'd both eaten it was time for some rides! Since we were in Norway the first had to be Maelstrom, of course:

IMG_0420.jpg

The wait time as actually less than ten minutes, there was no line and by the time we got out they changed the sign accordingly. It's coming for you!

IMG_0416.jpg

Break out the ponchos suckas:

IMG_0421.jpg

I don't think I've ever gotten wet on this ride and I've ridden it plenty of times. This is still one of the better rides in Disney (according to me, since it's my trip report so hold your complaints). I think what makes this ride even better is that at the end you get to enjoy this fantastic sign:

IMG_0417.jpg

Also if you're ever lucky enough to be in Disney with Alex and me (or unlucky enough) you get to have your ride topped off by this in real life!

IMG_0418.jpg

Even when she put the hat up it still was way too big:

IMG_0419.jpg

Up next we took a rather lengthy tour through our southern neighbor. Mexico! We took so many pictures here that it's going to take up two posts, so if you have a problem with Mexico skip over the next two posts.

Mexico! How I love your food, although I didn't eat here at all today and most of the Mexican places I eat are owned by super white folks (Chipotle, ever see that guy Here's a link to a picture of him)

Imagine our delight when this was our greeting to Mexico on this trip!

IMG_0423.jpg

I love that guy! He's great in all his different costumes. It makes it even better that he never, ever has pants. No pants = a lot funnier than pants. The girl in front of us on line had to have been the cutest thing we'd ever seen. She didn't want to let go of him and when her mother told her that she had to he bent down to give her a hug and she kissed him right on the bill and she told him that she loved him. Good for that girl, tough act to follow.

Finally it was time for us to explore the inside of this architectural marvel:

IMG_0424.jpg

I can't believe we didn't go inside at all last trip, damn Food and Wine Festival enticing us. We had a great time in here, all my efforts to convince Alex to eat at either Mexican restaurant were for naught though. I suffer well. Time for more Donald though:

IMG_0428.jpg

Here is our view of the place from the boat, looking at this picture I know what it's like to need glasses, luckily I don't really:

IMG_0430.jpg

A pyramid within a pyramid! Tonatiuh must be pleased.

IMG_0431.jpg

Fiesta hoy indeed, todos hoy cada hoy:

IMG_0438.jpg

This is not what I expect from such a fiesta, do not fiesta hoy if this is what's going on:

IMG_0440.jpg

I'm so bad at differentiating real and fake flowers that I couldn't tell until I asked Alex and she looked at me like I was crazy:

IMG_0446.jpg

Then I quickly lost interest in the flowers and became quickly obsessed with this business:

None of them look too pleased to be reunited:

IMG_0449.jpg

Alex enjoys nice window structures, who wouldn't when they look like this:

IMG_0453.jpg

And light fixtures:

IMG_0454.jpg

So many Donald's, they wouldn't look so excited if they knew what was going to happen to them:

IMG_0455.jpg

The hat I was wearing that day was comfortable enough, but why wear one baseball cap when I can wear three sombreros on top of that (yep, there are three):

IMG_0456.jpg

Another light fixture:

IMG_0457.jpg

We really liked a lot of the stuff they were selling in here. We took some time to watch the glass blowers, or melters, whatever they were doing I'm not too sure, all I know is that I could never do it. There was a set of three hot sauces that they had for sale but the case for it was ripped so I didn't pick that up. Oh well, I'm sure I could find it online if I really wanted to try them. When we finally got back outside we saw that the sun was finally trying to peak through although it was starting to set as well, so the sun didn't happen today, although maybe it was out over in MGM:

IMG_0460.jpg

We saw a lot of these guys swimming while we were down there as well. Are they just black ducks or are they something else? I have no idea:

IMG_0462.jpg

Who ever can tell me where this survey marker is gets a high five if we ever meet:

IMG_0463.jpg

I must have a picture of it from at least my last three trips to WDW. It holds no significance to me only that I always notice it so I always take a picture of it. Alex and I also had a bet going as to whether the pizza shack by Test Track would be open while we were down there, all the times her and I had been down there before we met and our last trip together we could never remember seeing it open. Not once. I owe Alex one dollar:

IMG_0464.jpg

A better bet would have probably been who ever lost had to eat a pizza from there. That's much more torturous than having to surrender a dollar. Not so horrible for the people above though I guess.

After debating whether or not to ride Test Track (not to ride) we made our way over to Mission Space. A quick note about this ride, last year we went on it and Alex did not take it so well so we didn't ride it this time around. We were collecting fastpasses where we could though for a scrapbook we've been talking about making since our last trip though so Alex went and picked those up while I took these photos:

IMG_0466.jpg

IMG_0468.jpg

I wonder if HP is getting out of the hardware business so they can continue to sponsor this ride. We also noticed this, which I thought was way cooler than I should have:

IMG_0469.jpg

After a few minutes of Alex rolling her eyes at me for looking at that thing for so long we went into the store over there where Alex spotted this thing along the other piping:

IMG_0470.jpg

The previous trip we didn't do Universe of Energy so I was super excited to go on it this time around (does any one ever actually get super excited for this ride? Is ride even the proper term? I don't think it is). On our way over there I made Alex get up on whatever you call the thing separating the lawn from the walkaway (although the foreign family didn't think it was there for any reason since they were letting their kids run all over the lawn) so I could take this picture:

IMG_0471.jpg

She didn't want to wait up there until a monorail came by. Understandable.

Finally it was time for Universe of Energy! I hadn't been on this in a good fifteen years or so since the last time I was down there with my family. I was excited:

IMG_0473.jpg

Although it was not to be. There were two CMs out by the front of the building telling us there were problems so it was closed for the time being. Turns out the Universe of Energy was having energy problems. Interesting, at least the clouds had cleared.

After quickly getting over my childhood disappointment we went over to Club Cool since last time I tried every one of the sodas and Alex tried none of them. Well she tried them this time around and didn't like any of them. Neither did I. Will have to remember that next time we're there. After taking our time in Club Cool and both Innoventions the sun had completely set and Alex got this really cool picture of the fountain (you know, THE fountain):

IMG_0474.jpg

And more SSE:

IMG_0475.jpg

Extreme close-up! Waaaaaaaaa!

IMG_0476.jpg

It was finally time to get serious, seeing as how the wait time for SSE was ten minutes and it looked like it would take a lot less than that we knew exactly what we had to do. Take another picture:

And then get on line, duh. As mentioned at the end of the last post there really was no line to speak of. The family in front of us didn't seem to know that. They just couldn't get their kids to move when the people in front of them would continue walking. These are things I notice and help me enjoy WDW even more now while I don't have kids. There's a lot of cave drawing going on in this portrait, it's a good thing Judi Dench explains it or else I'd think that humans just went from cave drawing to space walks:

Hello blurry Earth mother:

IMG_0480.jpg

We really liked this little part of the ride with the hanging lights or whatever they are:

IMG_0483.jpg

Here we are starting our journey:

IMG_0484.jpg

In case you couldn't get a good glimpse of our beautiful faces, here's a close up, they must have put a camera in the back of our hover vehicle:

IMG_0485.jpg

Good thing they dressed Alex up like George Jetson, especially since it's the beginning of our future:

IMG_0486.jpg

Told you. Since we can't get enough of SSE here's one last photo for the day:

IMG_0487.jpg

Maybe we got a little carried away, but it was only the second day, we got a lot more so over the next eight. Since we still had some time after SSE before our 8:30 ADR (I don't know why I thought it'd be such a good idea to make such late ADRs, but most of the time it worked fine. Tonight, not so much) we decided to take a swim:

IMG_0488.jpg

I love this queue, I don't remember the way it was for the old Living Seas but it's a good time the way it is.

Hello!

IMG_0513.jpg

We're big fans of manatees. When I was younger my older brother adopted one, that thing where you pay $30 a year and they send you a picture and updates. Well, he lost touch as he got older but when he got married last year he sent the place money again with a letter asking if his manatee, Troy, was still alive and available for adoption, turns out he was. Pretty cool, any way, by the time we got to where you can get up close to them and they come up to get air and play with their cabbage that area had closed already as it was fairly late (I think the park was closing at nine that night and it was pushing eight). We did get these though:

IMG_0515.jpg

IMG_0516.jpg

Sea cows moo? Beats me, but we also were able to get one picture of this dolphin who was rather elusive:

IMG_0517.jpg

Alex has quite the obsession with aquariums so the Living Seas is a great time for her, I like sealife a lot too, not as much though. I like the sea mammals, if you couldn't tell. Here's a mural, of sorts:

IMG_0520.jpg

IMG_0521.jpg

Although, the way we took those it makes it look like Crush is making them swim right into the shark's mouth. It's ok, fish are friends not food. I mentioned in one of my first posts that I deleted all the notes that I took from this trip that I had on my old phone so I couldn't tell you what this fellas name is but he was getting ready to go for a swim in the tank. It was pretty cool to watch how they prepare and all that:

IMG_0524.jpg

We're big fans of the seagulls from Nemo, bigger fans of the gulls out by the sign (we even managed to sneak SSE in there again):

Day 2 finale...

Not a very grand finale, but this is the last post for our second day. I can't believe there are going to be eight more of these.

More Spaceship Earth! HA!

IMG_0529.jpg

We decided to head over and get these two pictures even though we had no intentions of even going inside tonight:

Soarin', meh. So we mosied our way back to the WS for dinner. On our way we wanted to get a rare shot of us together, so we figured why not in front of the Christmas tree. Here's the picture of us where I'm doing something that Alex came to hate throughout the week, check out my left arm:

IMG_0534.jpg

Yep, she saw a few of those after we would load the pictures onto our laptop back at the hotel and made me put an end to it. Although it took a while, I don't know it's just a habit.

After a nice walk through the WS we go to our destination for dinner, a place I'd been excited for for quite some time (seems to be a trend with the food places this trip):

IMG_0535.jpg

Yep, I was able to talk Alex into this one. Plus I told her by booking it earlier in the week that if it wasn't too good then we'd have eight more days to make up for it.

IMG_0537.jpg

This is the only place we ate at that we didn't get any pictures of what we ate because we were sitting next to people we obviously didn't know. That's how they do it, we knew that going it. The food was very good, I think I was a bit confused by the miniature portions of the brautwurst and those things. The only problem (big problem for Alex since it's pretty much all she ate) was that the chicken was dry. Aside from that I enjoyed it very much, although I don't think I need to go back. I like how I make this stuff at home. We had a really nice mother/son duo sitting with us, they were from somewhere north of Orlando and he was shipping off to Ft. Leonard Wood sometime in February (soon, I'd imagine), so we had some nice conversation during our meal and wished them the best. Our server was awesome, Alex had been very excited since we booked the trip that we'd be in WDW for her birthday that she put we were celebrating her birthday on every ADR. He was nice enough to bring her a card with a dollar bill inside of it that had happy birthday writing all over it. His name was Robert (we're pretty sure, I'm at work so I don't have the card in front of me). He said he's been working at Biergarten for at least fifteen years and he does the same thing every time there's a birthday. He went on to tell us that every now and again he has people come in and request him as a server and when he gets to their table they show him the dollar bill that he gave him/her. Great guy, from the south, I would have expected someone from Germany, but whatever.

IMG_0539.jpg

I don't think I'll be writing any paragraphs that long the rest of this TR, I'm hoping (as I'm sure you are as well). We were lucky enough to catch the tail end of the bands performance, they were good. As I said before, I'm into that stuff.

IMG_0545.jpg

Robert saw us taking pictures all night and said that there wasn't any point if we weren't going to have one of us together, so he was nice enough to take one:

IMG_0540.jpg

Again, he was great. That was pretty much the end of our day after that. After dinner we took our time walking out of the park (we missed Illuminations since we were in the Biergarten, but we could certainly hear it). We decided to call it a night after dinner, having had a long day on Christmas we were ready to just sleep. We slowly made our way out of the park and back to CBR where we got some much needed sleep.

That's it for day two, there probably won't be another update until after the weekend so those of you that are reading know. I'm not neglecting the trip report, I'm just not writing in it for a few days.

Just to add a little side note to anyone that wants to enjoy the live show at the Biergarten..Do not make your reservation towards closing time..Epcot was open until 9pm and we had reservation for 8:30, I figured the entertainment would keep going until closing, apparently not..We literally watched them perform for 2 minutes which was kind of upsetting

She enjoyed the two minutes so much that she tried to get me to buy a pair of lederhosen.

Day 3 - MGM and Downtown, primarily...

Just so you all know right now we took a ton of pictures on this day, so if you don't like looking at pictures I don't know what you're doing reading any of these TRs. This day is specifically chock-full of them. Here goes!

As mentioned in the first post of this we were in building 15 of Barbados at the Caribbean Beach Resort, here's the sign that was our breath of fresh air at the end of each very long day:

IMG_0546.jpg

Hey, the pool beach. Cool.

Today Alex and I were mutually excited to go to MGM. Not only is TSMM, Alex's favorite ride, here but so is Star Tours and I could not wait to get on this ride. So we were off and when we arrived we were quite taken by this tree:

IMG_0548.jpg

Nice tree, but we weren't wasting any time, we were heading straight to TSMM to take care of business. Take care of business we did.

IMG_0549.jpg

Here's Alex about to take care of business:

IMG_0555.jpg

And take care of business she did, my business. She whooped my tukis.

IMG_0551.jpg

Thanks for the lift little buddy:

Once out of the ride we spotted what we had been wanting for a while. Souvenir popcorn buckets.

IMG_0557.jpg

How cool are they? Since I have somewhat of an obsession with R2-D2 I had to get that bucket. Alex had been saying how she wanted to get the Mickey snowman but when the time came she decided against it. She'd regret it later. Disney's popcorn is so good, it's like circus popcorn, extra salty and unhealthy. The best way to make it. After our short stop and me telling the CMs and people on line buying popcorn how awesome the R2 bucket was we headed to Star Tours. FINALLY!

IMG_0558.jpg

I ate a ton of popcorn on the line and then decided to dump it since there was no way we were going to finished it. Once inside I couldn't help but ________ my pants with excitement (except for the actual pooping part). Admiral Ackbar and his buddy hanging out up there, prepping stuff. AWESOME!

IMG_0559.jpg

Looks like they gave 3PO a good shining so he could great the guests, or complain:

IMG_0560.jpg

If you don't like Star Wars don't bother with the next post.

Hey buddy!

IMG_0563.jpg

Empress Teta is a pretty hot destination, we didn't go there though:

IMG_0564.jpg

It's a good thing I got this next shot because I would've forgotten which ride I was on:

Partners in crime:

IMG_0566.jpg

Not only am I obsessed with R2-D2 but I have equal admiration for all R2 units:

IMG_0568.jpg

Does this guy remind any one of Johnny 5 from the Short Circuit movies, or is it just me?

IMG_0569.jpg

I don't know what it is about droids that are so awesome, maybe it's their animated noises but here they are up close:

I think it was at this point that Alex told me to pay a little more attention to the line and a little less to the decor since there was about a fifteen foot gap between us and the people in front of us. Yep, I was that guy on Star Tours. I couldn't help myself, I grew up watching Star Wars (the original trilogy), I love them so I was very excited when we were finally able to get on Star Tours since we were in WDW during the refurb last time. Sue me! But here's our ride, time to fly!

IMG_0576.jpg

We were lucky enough to get seats front and center and it was awesome! Darth Vader tried to board our ship and then we got chased through some lands from the newer Star Wars movies which I'm not a big fan of so I don't know what they were. We saw that clown Jar Jar Binx though, we were under water and whatever. But the ride was awesome! I wanted to get right back on line and ride again but we still had plenty more days to do that.

We didn't see this guy in Tomorrowland:

IMG_0577.jpg

Here's the last Star Tours picture for a bit, I promise. I always wanted to climb up there as a kid. I still do.

IMG_0578.jpg

Nice wreath. Those clouds are starting to look ugly though.

IMG_0579.jpg

I like the guard booths around MGM, really adds to the feel. I think this was the point Alex said something along that lines of that if it rained on us because I was taking that picture she wasn't going to be too happy. Well, I don't consider drizzle to be rain.

IMG_0580.jpg

In the meantime we got these photos on our way into the Great Movie Ride, one of my all time favorites. Honestly if you don't know what this building is modeled after you shouldn't even be in this park, although that stupid hat has been blocking the good views of it for years now:

IMG_0581.jpg

I'm not sure why this one is sideways, we thought we'd got them all to face the correct way, looks like we missed one. Oh well, we're big Bogart fans and she's his last wife, can't go wrong. You know how to whistle, don'tcha?

IMG_0583.jpg

Feet!

IMG_0584.jpg

IMG_0585.jpg

Alex said this is her favorite part of the movie, so she got a picture. Unfortunately she was unhappy with it because of the partitions in the glass:

That's us! Luckily most people were still walking about outside so it only took us about ten minutes to get on the ride, that two party line cut about twenty minutes out of the queue, for us.

"Hello guvna!"

"Hueee dirty rahhht"

Alex reluctantly took this next one for me. Then again she said she'd rather see it through a camera than with her own eyes.

Indy's a little blurry, but you get the idea. More of him to come later tonight.

I read that the real chimp this is based off died not long after we got back, unfortunate news.

There he is!

So we got a little carried away, big deal. When we got out the rain had picked up, it wasn't pouring per se but it was coming down. It was big drops but not heavy, so Alex picked up a poncho just in case it keep up like this all day. We were really hoping it wouldn't. Hello Mr. Dino:

IMG_0616.jpg

I like this ship. We thought about eating here but it really wasn't very interesting, I thought a lot about trying those hot dogs but in the end they just weren't for me, plus there was nothing here Alex would've eaten.
