This holiday treat is a real crowd pleaser. Soft, yet crunchy with nuts and coconut. Take it to your next party and see how many people ask you for the recipe.

I have one VERY similar to this... but I believe we use chocolate chips and butterscotch chips. I leave out the nuts because my 6 year old is allergic to them. :) (She's okay with coconut.)

CHOCOLATE DROP SUGAR COOKIES

• 2/3 cup butter, softened
• 1 cup sugar
• 1 egg
• 1-1/2 teaspoons vanilla extract
• 1-1/2 cups all-purpose flour
• 1/2 cup HERSHEY'S Cocoa
• 1/2 teaspoon baking soda
• 1/4 teaspoon salt
• 1/3 cup buttermilk or sour milk*
• Additional sugar

1. Heat oven to 350°F. Lightly grease cookie sheet.

2. Beat butter and sugar in large bowl until well blended. Add egg and vanilla; beat until fluffy. Stir together flour, cocoa, baking soda and salt; add alternately with buttermilk to butter mixture. Using ice cream scoop or 1/4 cup measuring cup, drop dough about 2 inches apart onto prepared cookie sheet.

3. Bake 13 to 15 minutes or until cookie springs back when touched lightly in center. While cookies are on cookie sheet, sprinkle lightly with additional sugar. Cool slightly; remove from cookie sheet to wire rack. Cool completely. About 1 dozen cookies.

* To sour milk: Use 1 teaspoon white vinegar plus milk to equal 1/3 cup.

We have made these a few times and they will be on our cookie tray this holiday.
:slurp: :xmas:

When I was a kid, we called the Magic Cookie Bars "Hello Dollies" (I still love that name)

Also, tonight's trivia:

Cream of tartar is a by-product of the wine-making process.
It is commonly used when making meringue--somehow it stabilizes the egg whites.

You put cream of tartar in Snickerdoodles, dont you?

Mad, here is your biscotti recipe:

ALMOND BISCOTTI

1 lb Almonds cut into small pieces
4 extra large eggs
1 lb sugar
1/2 lb Crisco
2 tablespoons baking Ammonia or Baking Powder
1 teaspoon Vanilla
2 oz sweet liquor
Skin of one orange or lemon
1 teaspoon cinnamon
2 1/4 lbs Flour
1 egg beatten for coating top of cookies (egg wash)

PreHeat your oven to 350 or 375

1: Combine together 4 eggs, 1 lb sugar, 1/2 lb Crisco, 1 teaspoon Vanilla, 2 oz sweet liquor and 1 teaspoon cinnamon. Beat with mixer until nice and creamy.

2: Mix 2 tablespoons baking Ammonia or Baking Powder, Orange or Lemon skin (grated, of course ;) ) and 2 1/4 lbs of flour into liquid ingredients beat together in step 1.

3: Add 1lb chopped Almonds to the dough.

4: Make a roll about the width of a quarter (or bigger to taste. I make them a little wider) and brush with egg wash.

Bake at 350 or 375 (depending on your oven) for 35 minutes. Take out cookies and cut slices on an angle. Put back on baking sheet and put back in oven for 5 more minutes untill crisped.

Good luck, Mad :)

Seems like I saw that in one of my mother in law's cookbooks... I'll look this weekend when I'm there. :)

I have double checked my chocolate chip coconut macaroon recipe and corrected what needed correcting. Check the original post for the recipe.
