Christmas Decorations

Hello all!

I know this is a dumb question but I will be taking a first timer to Disney in December(December 15-December 22)and I am just worrying that the Christmas decorations will take away from the "first time experience." I have never been during Christmas so I don't know just how much Christmas spirit there is. So my question is, if you had never been to Disney and your first time was during all the holiday hoopla, would you be disappointed that it wasn't just classic Disney World?

Also, the only reason we're going in December is because that's the only time we have off.

Thanks for your answers in advance!! :)

Not at all disappointed with the decorations up. We have been in every season, and I think I like that time the best...

The first time we took the kids was early January, and the decorations were up. If anything, I think they were a little disappointed to see Cinderella's castle without the dream lights the next time we went.

Our last three trips have been during the Christmas Season. We love it and don't think it takes away from the overall experience. We have been to the parks during the regular/non holiday times and we actually prefer going during the holiday season. The parks are decorated very nicely. The parks aren't completely decorated through out. Mostly in certain areas. So I think you still get that classic Disney feel even during the Season.

My DH's & DS's first trip was in Dec of 2004, it was also my first time back since 1980, and I can say that the Christmas decorations just added to the magic. Unless you dislike Christmas decorations it is an wonderful addition to the parks and resorts! We haven't been at Christmas time since 2008 and I miss seeing the decorations, they are so beautiful. The only downside I see to going during the Christmas holiday season is the tendency to step up your own decorations at home and that usually requires purchasing more decorations :) I now have some bulbs that I have joined together into hidden Mickeys that I add to garland with ribbon for the front porch. If you love to decorate then be prepared to make some notes to take home to recreate.

It will only add to getting them truly hooked for Disney. A combination of the decorations, lights and festivities will make it an all time favorite time to return for future trips. It will be hard to match going any other time of year.

Definitely not. The decorations are not overpowering at all (except for the Osborne Lights in DHS which are really a special treat). Aside from a few xmas trees, wreaths, and poinsettias, it's still "classic Disney World." (Oh, and don't miss the life-size gingerbread house at the GF or the chocolate carousel at the BC for some extra holiday decor if you're interested.)

None of the Disney magic will be gone. As a matter of fact it will probably be more magical. Disney knows how to decorate for Christmas. You will not be disappointed.

The crowds would be much more of a turn-off than the decorations.

I always feel like you, OP. the first trip should be regular Disney, without all the decorations. Like you can't really see Main Street without all that, so you don't really get the vibe.

But it's not that big a deal. The crowds will be, though.

IMO, it will only enhance the first time experience BUT it may take away from a second time experience if that experience were to take place during, say, June.
That's what I was going to say - if anything it'll spoil your first-timer. My first trip as an adult after a 16-year hiatus (!!) was during the Flower & Garden Festival, so Epcot was looking extra lovely. Then we went in November when all the Christmas decorations were up, which was awesome. The parks looked soooo naked to me during our next trip in June. :(
