Chefs, you all submitted lovely appetizers!

Unfortunately, we do have to say an early goodnight to one of you.

And the chef on the chopping block is…

@Half/CartoonHalf/Human

Thank you so much for playing. We truly do adore the idea of a Ramen restaurant in EPCOT. Ultimately however, your submission was a little on the “safe” side by comparison, and so we had to chop you.

We do hope you’ll stick around and definitely invite you to continue participating in Imagineering Weekends!

Main Course:

For this round chefs, you will be adding a ride to a World Showcase pavilion that does not currently have one!

This prompt is often presented as asking for an “attraction” for a pavilion that lacks one. In this case, almost the entirely of World Showcase is on the table!

Your submissions should be between 6-12 sentences long and may contain a maximum of two images.

You have 60 minutes to complete your main course, and time starts….

Mushu's Fireworks Factory: An Old Twist on a Classic "Lost" Disney Attraction
disneyland-resorts-laod-bhangs-pin-traders-and-laod-bhang-co-fireworks-factory-wall-get-renamed.jpeg

The concept for a fireworks Factory has taken many forms, from a roller coaster meant to be tucked behind Main Street to a shooting dark ride that would have been included in a side ChinaTown sub-area of DCA's Pacific Wharf. For my "Main Course", I'll be reviving this concept and dishing it up in a way that's both exciting to modern theme park guests and lucrative to the shareholders through its dynamic but unintrusive use of IP.

Mushu's Fireworks takes places in the far back area of Epcot's China pavilion and gives guests a reason to explore the beautiful architecture found here that otherwise often goes unnoticed. The queue for the fireworks Factory wraps around an abandoned warehouse that suddenly gets brought to life in a pre-show involving the stone guardians from Mulan.
mushu-challenging-the-stone-dragon.jpg

This attraction continues the post-Mulan 2 story of Mushu still being Mulan's guardian. Her and Shang are seeking a big fireworks celebration for the five year anniversary of Mulan saving China, a timeline which allows the ride to also work a marketable baby daughter character into the series canon! Mushu welcomes guests to the factory and has them do his busy work. The attraction is a shooting dark ride with mild coaster elements. The actual layout of the coaster will be almost entirely flat with some banked turns, but the speed of the ride is dictated by how many fireworks you set off using the shooting mechanics.

If guests don't want the thrills, they can just enjoy the fun pyro fireworks effects on display being set off by other rides in the open factory setting. Each firework that gets set off gives the six person coaster cars a slight bit of acceleration. There will be three different tracks throughout the factory warehouse each passing by different fireworks displays while still having interactions with each other and block brakes to ensure no individual coaster train gets far enough along the course to actually collide with another car. Mushu's Fireworks Factory promises to be a very engaging D Ticket experience for an often overlooked pavilion that happens to be one of the most elegantly designed in the World Showcase.

little reviews -

@TheOriginalTiki - I love Soarin, and the opportunity to experience its views (and more importantly, smells!) from another perspective sounds amazing. Its always exciting when rides connect like this, showing things from a whole new POV, but now you get to drink lol. I'm not sure how it would work in practice (the ride may be a little fast-paced for thte lounge), but the concept here is great. Its a bit of Space 220, but with a lot of dynamism in how it connects directly to a running ride. Also appreciate the Warburton callbacks!

@ThemeParkPriest - This is a well-fitting inclusion to the Journey of Water, and the more broad-reaching Samoan theme works well in the context of wider EPCOT. It's a bit on the simpler side, but the little things do add up, including considering pairings and text colors. That said, I would have preferred a bit more info on the theming.

@Lizzy May Bee - I absolutely love this pitch! The origami theme is incredibly inspired; I can see this quickly becoming a fan-favorite for this unique but eye-catching aesthetic. I'm also a sucker for any kind of concept art, so the logo is much appreciated! I do wish there were some additional focus on the dining. For the presentation, although its on a doc, the color against the black is a bit hard to read, and the font is on the smaller side, some more text bolding or one extra ref. photo would help sell this eye-catching idea!

@Half/CartoonHalf/Human - Having not been to EPCOT in years, I'm surprised there's no ramen in the pavilion already! A ramen bar is an excellent choice and I appreciate all the small details around the restaurant. This was the most realistic theme & proposal, so potentially for the future, some ways to build it up more could be focusing more on the menu or some specific theming moment within the restaurant for guests to engage with. But across the board, this is a very smart and well-fitting inclusion!

Great work everyone for compiling these in such a short span of time! Good luck to the remaining players with their entrees!

The Bon Odori
IMG_6742.jpeg
Doubling back to the Japan pavilion for the main course, I’ve cooked up a new coaster themed around the Japanese holiday of Obon. Obon is a holiday focused on remembering and honoring the deceased, and while it’s a very interesting and rich holiday that I’d encourage you to read more about on your own time, for now I’ll highlight the Bon Odori dance, as the attraction is primarily themed around it. The facade of the attraction is designed to give the false impression of being temporary, as a tapestry of colorful patterned tents come together to form the building, reminding guests of a summer festival. The theme of the indoors coaster is relatively abstract, mainly taking form through the traditional music which is synced up with the twists and turns of the ride to “make guests dance”, in a matter of speaking (think of it like a different take on Rock ‘N’ Rollercoaster). Visually, vibrant lanterns and colorful visions of festival activity give the coaster a unique look beyond just being another Space Mountain. As far as the technical side goes, the attraction is on the more intense side of family friendly offerings, providing varied movements at a high speed without focusing on any particular gimmick. I hope the mix of unique and familiar flavors in this dish pleases the judges!

ThemeParkPriest presents...Peace Parade at the Japan Pavilion

In a partnership with the Nagasaki Peace Museum, the Japan Pavilion at Epcot will soon have the Peace Parade educational Omnimover ride. In keeping with the theme of the rest of the pavilion, a pagoda-style houses the 5-minute attraction.

12-Nagasaki_Aftermath_Groundlevel-3064951787.jpg

The ride starts with imagery of rubble and a simple description of the atomic bombs that were dropped on August 6, 1945 in Hiroshima and three days later (August 9) in Nagasaki. The narrator states, “Although these horrific events, including lives lost, cannot be reversed, peace has been tirelessly worked at since then.” In the next scene, guests see Takashi Nagai, a doctor who survived but was affected seriously by the Nagasaki bomb and then became a spokesman to the world prior to his death in 1951. The ride continues onto significant moments in nuclear disarmament efforts, including the Treaty on the Non-Proliferation of Nuclear Weapons (NPT), in effect since March 1970, of which 190 nations have committed to pursue general and complete disarmament. Next, the radio announcement from April 17, 1982 outlining “a world free of nuclear weapons” given by U.S. President Ronald Reagan is shown.

Near ground zero of one of the bombs, guests travel through the Nagasaki Peace Park with the Atomic Bomb Museum next to them. In a final scene, a Japanese boy and an American (Caucasian) girl are seen seated next to each other along with other youth from around the world in a Model United Nations as words are heard about working for peace as something that young people can aspire to.

@TheOriginalTiki - Really like the inclusion of Mulan for the attraction - it not only keeps the vibes of attractions like Frozen Ever After (a ride that surprisingly has gotten better and more enhanced with age at other parks), but also adds a unique attraction to the World Showcase lineup, with a shooter dark ride/mini-coaster hybrid. Great job!

@Lizzy May Bee - I think dancing is a broad but fitting selection for a coaster style attraction. I appreciate the research and the thought that went into the concept. I would have preferred a bit more about the attraction itself, but your descriptions were enough for me to get the main course of what you were serving.

@ThemeParkPriest - Another Japan selection! I do appreciate the intention of the attraction, and I especially like the omnimover component. I'm not sure if it may be appropriate to start the ride after the bombing, considering how historically close it is, that being said I think an educational option in Epcot is never something to sleep on and delivered as a main course even if it was a bit spicy.
