Choosing Your Resort?

What a lovely Sunday it is here in Bonnie Scotland.Having just returned from a walk ( exercise for a week ) along by our loch,we bumped into friends who are planning a WDW vacation for the first time. They are taking their 2 children, both girls aged 4 & 7, but also her mother is going ( baby sitter ) So they have looked at the resorts on site but asked me how do we choose which resort to stay at. Now we all have our favourites just like your favourite car.So my question to all of you is.How do you choose which resort to stay at.? Do you first decide on how much $$$$$ you want to spend. After that, what is your priority? Is it location ? Is it the theme of the resort ? Curious on how do you choose your resort.

My first priority in choosing where to stay is if we have been there before or not...we like to try different places instead of repeating choices....for example we just booked BLT and could have chosen OKW, VWL, SSR or BWV and took BLT because we have not stayed there yet. I love VWL and it was difficult not to just pick it again, but the excitement of trying new places outweighed the desire to repeat at VWL...same with POP...really like it when budget is tight, but picked AOA to try something different...we do the same staying off site, where we have stayed at some amazing places as well.

Everyone here knows we are a Polynesian family, usually... LOL but for me it was always for nostalgia and ease of transportation choices. But this year, WL has many options as well, sans the monorail but its easy to get to!! Also, restaurant choices are also considered.
I just know you are going to love WL...would love to see your face when you walk into the lobby...or your DH's face...I really know he is gonna love it...something manly about it as compared to the Poly.

My first choice is always Beach Club. If it is booked are second choice is Boardwalk or Bay Lake. And that is mostly because of location.
If we are coming and need to pick a Value... WE love (yes I said Love) Pop. We have been going there since it opened and it just has a lot of memories for us. :)
I love the theme at Pop...something big and amazing everywhere you turn...then we went to AoA and it has theme that is over the top amazing...some may say too over the top, but not me.

last October, my son and I went over to look around the WL and really loved it but DH has only seen the lobby in pictures and already loves it! Yes, hes definately one of those macho type guys LOL loves fishing and the mountains, so I definately expect him to fall in love with WL! He already extended our vacation from 7 to 9 days.... do I hear 10??? LOL I know, I know, don't press my luck LOL

We have only ever stayed at Pop, mostly b/c of monetary reasons. Our first trip, my parents paid for 7 people to go to Disney for Christmas (we arrived Christmas day and left on New Year's Eve). So, they went with Pop. We loved it and exploring it was awesome! For our second trip and our daughter's first, we chose Pop as well. It was what we could afford at the time partly b/c I booked the trip with very little planning. I booked with like 4 months until we traveled, so we did not save and have time to pay it off like we do for our next trip. For our trip in September, I started to plan a year in advance and actually booked it in January. So we have been saving up for almost 6 months. A little bit of planning and a little pixie dust from Disney (thank you pin code for 35% off Deluxe), we are booked for the Contemporary. For us, it came down to Contemporary and WL. I liked the rooms at the Contemporary best (we booked a Deluxe South), but I love the WL's lobby and lush surroundings and pool. It really just depends on the individual family and finding what is most important to them. For us, it was proximity, comfort of the room, and affordability. So probably the best advice is just tell people to do their research and pick a hotel that is best for their situation. What is good for one, may not be good for another.

As a DVC member, I look at two items - who is travelling with me and what my general mood is at the moment. Every resort has in my mind plusses and minuses and I choose either by asking those who are travelling with me what they would like to experience or if I am solo what adventures lie ahead....

My home base is Sataroga and like it, but it is not among my favorites. I like being able to walk to DTD, and I like the food court. I enjoy walking the paths and being able to boat over to OKW if I wanted to.... The rooms are ok, its the new DVC standard, so nothing to get excited over. In the ten years I have been a member, I have stayed there three times....

OKW is great room wise - they are so big I can get lost in them and are perfect if I have a group coming along. But the negative is that you need the bus to get around the resort and the food choices are limited.

VWL is phenomenal - would stay there again in a heartbeat. Love the theming, the rooms, the ambiance....

BCV is a nice - love the pool at the resort and the proximity to Epcot and HS. Rooms don't really have a view, so that is a negative.

BWV is where I have booked my last two trips - love the entertainment on the Boardwalk, the shops, the people watching and the proximity to Epcot and HS. Looking forward to October for my trip....

Haven't been to BLT yet - but some upcoming trip I will give it a try.

When Grand Floridian opens, may have to try at least a couple of days....

Tell me about it, we used to stay at the Wilderness Lodge which I loved but they love being on the monorail. I have always wanted to stay at the Yacht Club but can't talk them into it.
Have not stayed at Yatch Club but have at Beach Club and they share the best pool on property...Stormalong Bay. I would walk a mile in my bare feet to Stormalong Bay vs. riding the monorail directly over any other pool in the place. Yes, I like monorail and plan to stay at BLT in Sept., but limiting choices is kinda like going to Ghirardelli and only wanting vanilla.
