The Culture of Abandonment comes to DCL

The story is that the Chilhuly chandelier was removed due to the wear and tear of the securing framework and within the design itself. There was concern that the big thing could break off in a heavy storm.

On a cruise 3 years ago this was discussed during the a affair with some engineering Officers. It was being investigated at that point.

We discussed this after the Magic left drydock a few months back after such a large part of the atrium being redesigned. The current chandelier's scale seems an odd choice to me personally and the style is a bit off-rack. But, one definitely sees that the old chandelier wouldn't have worked so well with the new decor.

I definitely agree with what @Tonka's Skipper has to say about the rigging. Think about how these massive chandeliers are cleaned/maintained. I know the Dream's main fixture is lowered to the ground periodically for maintenance. I can well imagine 15 years of that much glass hanging from mechanized rigging would be a stretch, no pun intended.

Besides, who's to say another chandelier isn't in the works. Right?

Well first off unlike most of his works this one was acrylic for safety reasons, They did change the decor and this definitely did not fit. But to go from a commissioned work by a known artist to a home store type fixture speaks to TDO culture infecting DCL.

I have a design suggestion which should fit it with TDO's expense reduction mantra since DCL is adopting it.

It's low mass retro styling and really easy to clean and maintain replacement parts are available at any ship's chandlery worldwide

I definitely agree, the new chandelier leaves much to be desired. When on the Magic before the old Chilhuly was removed I felt the protrusion of that massive sculpture was a bit much for the space. I personally would've liked to see something as interesting as the Chilhuly piece but in a lower profile fixture. It is kinda perplexing, really. Look at the atrium fixtures on the Dream & Fantasy. Those are fine focal points for the respective atriums. Whoever came up with this during the Magic dry dock sure lacked imagination. Perhaps it was a budget issue with the overall dry dock costs. Who knows? Maybe they'll come back & replace it with something better. But, like the other thread about the OBB blackouts, I wouldn't be surprised at all if this fixture choice was somehow tied to the company-wide cost cutting of late. Unfortunate.

Did it never occur to anyone to overhaul the framework - nah forget I said that this is TODAY's Disney where cheap and nasty rules.
