Child Labor Laws

Every time I go to WDW, I see the children at the China pavilion performing their routine. What's the deal? I understand how college age folks from other countries make the deal to work at WDW, but how does it work for the little children from China? Who looks after them? They always work at night!!!! They can't stay in the Commons...can they? Do they go to school?

You mean "the Pu-Yang acrobats"? I have no idea.... they are a family, no? I am sure they have private classes, cause they were all day at the park! :D

You're a former CM and you don't know and that worries me. Yes I am talking about those young and very talented acrobats. They could be a family, I don't know. Those children work very hard! I have seen a few of the same children from year to year but most seem to be new (i.e. rotated out of the "acrobatic farm"). Maybe I'm off base here but something doesn't seem right to me.

Well child larbor laws vary from state to state. I know what you are getting at but I think Disney would not allow it because it is against the law. They could get in big, big trouble. And I don't think Disney would risk it just to have kids dance or whatever they do.

Maybe I shouldn´t have answered to your post... I just wanted to make sure the Pu Yang acrobats were still working at the park and that´s what you were talking about.

I am not worried about my lack of knowledge about the law for children´s labor. Thanks for your concern, but you shouldn´t worry about it either.... I do know what I needed to do to be able to work there and I followed those rules. Why should I need to know about it if I am a foreigner and I am not underage?

I don´t think Disney would even bother to hire them if they were acting against the law. I´m sure they have everything covered.

And no, they don´t stay in The Commons. The Commons is only for the participants in the various International Programs, all of them 18 and up. They are "performers", part of Entertainment, not included in those programs.

No, no, no! I wasn't being critical of your knowledge! I have read many of your posts and you have a wonderful knowledge of WDW. You have educated me as to many of the wonders of WDW. Please forgive me! I was not being critical of you. Just the reverse. My thinking was that if Maria did not know about this subject then there might indeed be a problem. All the posts I have seen say generally the same thing (i.e. WDW would not violate any law or take advantage of children) so everything must be ok. Hey, I love WDW and own stock in the company. However, inquiring minds want to know what is the deal with those little children from China. Sorry I made you angry.

Appology accepted. ;) Sorry you won´t be able to see it.

I also want to know what the deal with those acrobats is. ;)

the laws are different for child performers... sorry about how long it took to reply though.

Without exceptions to the law, in the case of child performers, there wouldn't be any kids on TV

Heading for the great escape.
Just to confuse the issue but thinking of DLP, the new european ruling on employment if minors (kids not coal diggers) classes everyone 15 and over as an adult and subject to the same hours and rules. Not very supportive of kids IMHO speaking as a Dad.

What I remeber being told about them (they were preforming as we walked by on Discovery day):

They're on a special Visa, they only stay for a short period, like 3 or 6 months, and then go back home. The same children are also not preforming throughout the day. *looks for a tell-a-cast*

They preform 5 shows a day, but anyways.. they alternate. There are 2 groups of children. Kinda like the twin girls from "Full House." Anyways, they alternate. They only work one hour a day, max, that way. They either have 3 twenty-minute sets, or 2 twenty-minute sets, depending on the day.
