Whats a MOC
This isn't the first time I've been asked this question. I used to it.

A Moc is really short for Mockingbird. The mascot for the University of Tennessee at Chattanooga used to be the moccasins (yes the shoe.) It was based on a bend in the Tennessee River called Moccasin Bend. In all the Native American controversy, the University dropped it and shortened it to Mocs. Our mascot is now a mockingbird (Tennessee's state bird) names Scrappy.

Intimidating isn't it? :)

Having spent two years at Georgia Southern, I'm somewhat familiar with UT-Chattanooga, since they play in our conference. From what I gather, the term "moc" originally referred to the Native American heritage of the Chattanooga area, and the Moccasin tribes in general. In today's social environment, though, any "mocassin" references have been officially shortened to "moc," and the mascot of the school is the bird you see in the avatar. The bird is a mockingbird, which (I could be wrong here) is the state bird of Tennessee. Also, railroads have played a big part in the history of Chattanooga, thus the bird wears an engineer's hat and at times drives a locomotive engine. So the answer to "what is a moc?" isn't easily answered. It can refer to Indian lore, mockingbirds, railroad engineers, and I'm sure there are other references, too.

(And I'm sure I got some of this wrong, so I'll wait for dinseymoc to correct any mistakes I made here.) :D

Well from a Cardinal's point of view (SUNY Plattsburgh), the avatar looks cool.

I bet everything looks cool from a Cardinal's point of view

Easy there Moc. We may not have the most manly of birds as a mascot, but we're tough. Our hockey team has been the SUNYAC Champions 17 times and are two time NCAA Champions.

Plus you have to be tough to get through our Cardinal Country winters.

Which is why I never go to Plattsburgh in the winter.

As Bird Berdan always said..." its another fine day here in the North Country!"

I'm not one to talk about having a manly bird. A mockingbird is scrappy, but very small. At least Scrappy appears to be a but intimidating. :) He would fall over at the sight of a small child walking his way though.
