When we transferred between AKL and GF, we arrived at GF soon after 9 and checked in, hit the parks and then returned around 4 to collect our luggage (which Disney was moving for us) and be shown to our room

You can arrive at a Disney Resort Hotel at almost any hour of the day. They understand that people are coming from all over the world and can't always arrive during "normal" hours.

They staff the front desk and concierge desk 24 hours a day, to the best of my knowledge, at each resort. This means that you can arrive and technically "check in" at any time on your arrival day.

You will get your Key to the World and it will have your park tickets and meal plan (assuming you ordered both) on it, but you will NOT be able to access any rooms. Arriving at midnight will definitely not be to your advantage, as you'll be sleeping on the floor of the lobby until A) A theme park opens or B) you can check into your room.

They occasionally have rooms ready earlier than check-in time, but not if it's a busy time of year. And NEVER at midnight :p

JPVonDrake posted the definitive information in this post.

Official Check-in is 3:00 PM at all Disney Value, Moderate and Deluxe Resorts; 1:00 PM at Fort Wilderness Campsites; and 4:00 PM at Deluxe Villa Resorts.

Official Check-out is 11:00 AM at all Disney Resorts, Villas and Campsites.

EARLY CHECK-IN

You can register as early as 7:00 AM at any Disney Resort. While the room may not be ready at that time, you may complete the rest of the registration process. You will receive your Resort Key to the World (KTTW) Cards with your Theme Park tickets, dine plan, room charge privilege and any other included package components encoded on it upon registering.

If your room is ready, the front desk will be happy to assign it to you early. If your room is still being prepared, you will be given a phone number to call to find out the status of your room availability. Once you are told your room is ready, you will not need to return to the front desk. Your KTTW card will automatically be activated to open your guest room door.

While waiting for your room availability, feel free to give any luggage you may be carrying to Bell Services and start enjoying your Resort's pool or other amenities or hop on the resort transportation to visit any of the Theme Parks or Downtown Disney.

LATE CHECK-IN

If a Guest has a deposit on the reservation, the Resort will hold the room until check-out the following day.

LATE CHECK-OUT

Late check-out availability is limited. Requests for late check-out can be made at the Front Desk any time after arrival. There may be an additional charge for a late check-out based on the time you wish to vacate your room.

Indeed, "official" early check-in time is 7am, but you still have the option of at least getting your credentials and park media earlier.

I've been back from the parks well after midnight and have seen guests checking in. They just stowed their luggage with bell services, got their cards, and sat on a couch - I'm guessing till sometime after 7am.

Again, I don't advise this because there's NOTHING to do, and nowhere to go between midnight and 8 or 9am.

Um, actually JPVonDrake's post says quite clearly that 7 a.m. is the earliest time a guest can get their KTTW card and other entitlements on their reservation. Not at midnight, 2 a.m., or any other time. Perhaps the people you saw were checking in for the previous day?

Plus, the reason people can't check in before 7AM is the "end of day" process that the hotel does every night. Before the process is run, the front desk can't check anyone in for the next day's arrival. Typically this is done sometime between 3AM and 5AM every night. It's where they close out the day's business, settle all credit card charges, and get ready for the next day's business and Guest arrivals. After it's done, you can usually check in, but as JPVonDrake's post said, they don't guarantee that the end-of-day is done earlier than 7AM.

Also during the process, there's very little that the front desk can do with room keys and reservations. Back in September, I'd left my room key behind at the Adventurers Club where I'd opened a tab on my room charge but forgot to close it when I left. (Oopsie)
When we got back to Pop Century, the front desk had already started the end-of-day process, and wasn't able to issue me a new key card until it was done. I had to wait and go back in the morning. If my friend who was with me hadn't had his room key, they would have sent a CM with us to let us into our room with a master key.

Come to think of it, you're probably right. They were probably just checking in REALLY late for the day before.

I remember hearing something at the front desk before (overhearing a convo between a guest and CM) and the issue of doing something at 3 in the morning came up and the CM said "no problem". I'm guessing now that it was something other than checking in and getting tickets.
