Changing a reservation at 7 months.

I was just wondering how the following scenario works. Let's say we plan to vacation in July next year. Our home resort is SSR but we hope to stay at BWV. (we have 150 pts) . At 11 months we book SSR and hope to change our res at 7 months. All our points are used for the first booking. I log on to the website and find BWV is available at seven months and wish to change. Does the website offer to cancel my first reservation while holding my new choice. Or do I have to cancel first, re do my search and hope it still exists? I hope that is not the case. But I was just wondering.

You have to cancel first. That may seem like a risk but in your case, if the BWV room happens to disappear before you can get it booked, you will have no trouble re-booking at SSR.

You could handle it all with a phone call to Member Services but MS opens an hour after online booking begins for the day. That alone will reduce your chances of success.

I would also recommend calling. We also own at SSR, and even though we love the resort, we also like staying at the other DVC resorts. We have had no problem with switching, but we also travel during the slower periods, and understand that we will never get BCV or BWV at 7 months during Food & Wine. As long as your expectations are realistic, you should not have a problem.

I too recommend, we have changed several times and switched hotels, and have found its a lot easier to call and talk to someone regarding the switching they can do it right there....best of luck.

I won't argue the question of which approach is easier: online vs. phone. But I just want to reiterate that if you wait to call Member Services, those booking online will have a one hour head start to book all available rooms. The member website begins accepting reservations at 8am eastern...Member Services doesn't open until 9am eastern.

There are many times of the year when that hour means the difference between getting a room and not getting a room. At times, it only takes minutes for all remaining rooms to be booked at 7 mos.

Will that make a difference for a July arrival date? It isn't a peak travel period for members (unless you're talking about dates around July 4) so it may not. But I'd be kicking myself if I waited until 9am to call and was then told there is no availability.

If it were me, I'd be online at 7:55am trying to make the changes myself. It's really not that difficult.

Yes, the existing reservation has to be cancelled first. In many cases that's a risky proposition--you could end up losing both reservations if the intended destination is not available and the original room is quickly grabbed by someone else. But for SSR, you would have no trouble getting that room back if BWV proves unavailable.

Back on March 1, I wanted to move my reservation from SSR to BWV. I was on line and saw that the rooms I wanted were available...so I went on, cancelled my SSR and went to book BWV. In the process, something went wrong and I had to give up....but I knew there were rooms....

When member services opened, I called to get everything worked out. The CM made a mess out of the entire reservation.... it was a disaster - to the point where I had a room at BWV for two days, but had to go back to SSR for a day or two and then back to BWV again.... The CM kept putting me on hold, and finally when he came back on I said I had three minutes to get this complete as I had to be back in my classroom when the bell rang....and he put me on hold again. With seconds to spare, he had this mess of a vacation and I was beside myself....

At my next break I called back member services, and spoke to someone who had a total grasp of what I needed to do, and within three minutes took care of everything I needed. I had a full stay at BWV and while it wasnt the Boardwalk view, it was good!!!

Long story shortened - try to do it online yourself... if it fails, get on the phone and if the person you speak with isn't the greatest, try again later!
