Castaway cay 5k?

Indeed, they do. However, when I did it last April, it wasn't a traditional race. It was basically "do it yourself". Start whenever you want, and whenever you finish, tell a Cast Member to get your "medal".

I can confirm this is still true as of last week. They may run out of medals if you finish too late in the day. Allegedly.

This is a gripe of my wife’s. Have the 5k but get back to registering, having those running get off the ship earlier than others, etc.

On the other hand, doing all of those things will exclude people. Why exclude people from a run?

No need to exclude people. Anybody can still run it at anytime. It's not like they close the course. But for people who might like a little (very little) competitive component, having a set start time with other runners might be nice to have back.
The old system would literally reach the point of being “sold out.” Most people won’t insist on running a sold out event. It also excluded children who are old-enough to participate in a runDisney 5k for some reason.

Both of those issues can be addressed within a set-start-time structure. And even if it does sell out, as I mentioned before, people can still run it at any time. Just not against other runners, which is how it is now anyway.

I don't see how registering excludes anyone? The current free-for-all is a bit inconvenient for runners because the course is not closed for any length of time. Minor quibble, I know. But register and allow those who want to run early to do that, and let others do it at their leisure.

Under the current free-for-all, if you started the 5k at, say, 2pm and finished at 3:30pm and they were somehow out of medals (which I have heard does happen), wouldn't you be a bit upset? It shouldn't happen, because the medals are pretty damn cheap, all things considered, so there's no reason Disney shouldn't have boxes of them available at any given time. If you want the medal, registration is the way to go.

People are excluded because the scheduled events “sell out” and exclude kids under age 10. If it sells out, no medal. Not sure how the 2pm runner matters. They weren’t doing the 5k before Covid, either.

I’ve not heard of anyone running early in the day and being denied a medal. I doubt many people want to run at 2 pm, anyway, although I have seen a couple crazy people at mid-day at the BoardWalk doing so. Seems dangerous in August but live your truth.

There’s really no question on this: more people are able to do the 5k now.

I'm really not trying to be argumentative, honest. But I just don't understand why you think going to a registration structure means people can't run the 5k. It just means some people can't run it at 8:30am and will run it at some point later in the day. Which is the same situation that exists now.

Everyone will be able to run it. Every single passenger on the ship will be able to run the course, even if they add a registration for people who want to run it early against other runners.

So again, I'm not trying to argue with you. I just don't understand what your objection is.

In January 2022, I specifically didn’t run the 5K event because it was just a random independent thing. Thought it was very silly

I cruised last time with 9 y.o.s. They ran and got medals, which is important to them. Under the old system, they would not have. Pretty simple, actually. The age cut-off is arbitrary and different from every other runDisney 5k.

I also think everyone feels empowered to run now. If you are told upfront, “sorry, sold out,” I doubt you’ll run. There are already enough activities on a Disney cruise that sell out with platinum and gold cruisers.

So if they were to run now, with no registration, would they get a medal? That's an honest question because I genuinely don't know the answer. If they are able to get a medal now by running without a start time, then maybe that will still be true when they bring back the registration.

That's an issue with the runners, not the system. If they actually want to run, they will. If it's not important to them, they'll find something else that they like to do.

Well, they were 9 and got medals. On our first cruise, they were 7 and not allowed to sign up.

Most people want a cheap medal…

My husband has now told me for some odd reason wants to do the 5K and get the medal.

Is there a cost for the Medal at the end of the race and I assume start time is from when they let all guests on the island now? No earlier like it used to be?

No cost for the medal.

It's been over a year since I was there, so I'm not sure what the starting procedure is now. After Covid, there wasn't a set start time. You just ran it whenever you wanted. I honestly don't know if that is still the case.
