Cast Member Experiences

Yes
While a cast member (way back when in 1994) working in the MK on Main Street - I had the pleasure of working one of the most memorable days in my life.

I was working the far cart on MN (closest to the Castle at the time). We were always instructed that when you saw a family with one of the buttons from Give Kids the World (GKtW) you were do to what ever it took to make them happy. As it happened - I had just sold my last green Goofy hat about 5:30 that afternoon (and the park closed at 6). Not long before 6, one of the families came up to the cart - and I notice the GKtW button on a young boy (all of 7 or 8, if that). His mom & dad had promised him one of the hats all day long on the way out of the park, and this was the only place that carried them at the time. You could see the dissapointment in the boys face when he couldn't find one on the cart. Noticing the pin...I pulled his mom aside and told her that I was off the next day and that if they were still going to be on property I would meet them somewhere with the hat. Said they were actually going to be at Epcot - done I said - meet me at the front of the Fountains at 10AM. She looked at me with shock and honestly - I don't think she believed me.

I got a hat from inventory - wrote it off (manager approved thank you!) and was only thinking about the next morning.
I got to Epcot early - as I knew if they didn't see me 1st they would go on thinking I had yanked thier chain. Sure enough - 10AM came up and there they walked...His mom and dad, both had the biggest grin on their faces. I pulled the hat out of the bag and you would of thought I handed them all a million dollars. Hugs went around, and thank you's - and they were off.

Again - by happen stance, my roommate and I went to volntr at GKtW that night. And who strolls by - but the "Goofy Family". I made a bee line to them, and his mom was all tears. She said he hadn't taken the hat off all day long (not even during HISTA). She said that she couldn't believe I went out of my way to do that for them - said it was my pleasure and I wanted to. Again, hugs and tears all around.
I still have the memory of him running with all the other kids and his big green Goofy hat on like it was just "supposed to be there!" - knowing that what ever sickness he had, what ever battle he's been fighting and probably about to lose, that was the farthest thing from his mind that afternoon.

You're my idol.
I mean it, you are everything a castmember should be and I can't thank you enough for sharing that.

pocamahontas,

your story about your trainer is truly wonderful. sometimes i wonder if the people working behind the scenes are just cynical bureaucrats, but your story renews my faith that the people working at the happiest place on earth are doing just that-trying to keep it the happiest place on earth.

oh man i teared up reading all these stories! They're all equally inspiring and that is why I want to become a CM soo badly. If i could make a person visiting the world half as happy as those CMs made you all feel.. i'd be fulfilled with life.

Wow

These stories are all so inspiring - I thought I'd add a few of my own:
1) My first really special cast member experience was in the disney christmas store where a young woman Mary was working. I was five at the time, I had been looking for Robin Hood all day, and he was my favorite character. My mom and I went to the woman and asked her if she knew where I could find robin hood. She checked on the phone for me, and at first looked a little perturbed. She came around the desk to us and said that Robin Hood wasn't supposed to be in the parks that day, but he was making a special trip just to see me. She took me to a lowly populated area next to the store, and low and behold, out came robin hood. I was so excited that I almost cried (and I'm pretty sure my mom actually did).

2) On our trip in 2002, me, my best friend, and my parents stayed at AKL. We met two people in the gift shop, Jim and Tarra. Throughout the trip, they got us involved in pin trading. We used to talk to them about working for Disney all the time - our last night, we sat in the gift shop to talk to them. At the end of the trip, they gave us magical moments certificates. It was great :-D We actually got back in touch with them after we left, and we still talk occasionally!

3) Two trips ago (may of this year), I went down with my very well behaved marching band:lookaroun (we weren't really that hyperactive, I respect Disney too much). We had to meet our directors at the Rainforest Cafe in AK, in about half an hour, and they all wanted to go on Kilamanjaro Safaris (there were 9 of us), and I knew we wouldn't have enough time. Sure enough, we got to the line, and it was 40 minutes long. I asked a CM that was walking by if the wait time was accurate, because I know sometimes it's shorter. She said yes, and asked us why we asked. I explained that we had to meet our band directors and yada yada yada, and she said "come with me." She took us through the back entrance, and put us all on the ride. After spending all day trying to explain to my friends why disney was better than six flags :)brick:), I finally just turned around to them and said "now you know why," and we all thanked her profusely.

Nothing like a great CM to make people into believers!:)

Totally OT but, my English Comp. teacher made the mistake of using WDW vs. 6 Flags as an example on out Compare/Contrast essay. She went into the mock outline and she said "How are they the same?" I responded "They are completely different." Then, I told her why. I highly doubt she will ever use that again. LOL!

Once while in line for Expedition Everest, a cast member forgot to take my brother and my fastpasses so we got to ride it twice quickly despite hour long lines:D:sohappy:
