While a cast member (way back when in 1994) working in the MK on Main Street - I had the pleasure of working one of the most memorable days in my life.
I was working the far cart on MN (closest to the Castle at the time). We were always instructed that when you saw a family with one of the buttons from Give Kids the World (GKtW) you were do to what ever it took to make them happy. As it happened - I had just sold my last green Goofy hat about 5:30 that afternoon (and the park closed at 6). Not long before 6, one of the families came up to the cart - and I notice the GKtW button on a young boy (all of 7 or 8, if that). His mom & dad had promised him one of the hats all day long on the way out of the park, and this was the only place that carried them at the time. You could see the dissapointment in the boys face when he couldn't find one on the cart. Noticing the pin...I pulled his mom aside and told her that I was off the next day and that if they were still going to be on property I would meet them somewhere with the hat. Said they were actually going to be at Epcot - done I said - meet me at the front of the Fountains at 10AM. She looked at me with shock and honestly - I don't think she believed me.
I got a hat from inventory - wrote it off (manager approved thank you!) and was only thinking about the next morning.
I got to Epcot early - as I knew if they didn't see me 1st they would go on thinking I had yanked thier chain. Sure enough - 10AM came up and there they walked...His mom and dad, both had the biggest grin on their faces. I pulled the hat out of the bag and you would of thought I handed them all a million dollars. Hugs went around, and thank you's - and they were off.
Again - by happen stance, my roommate and I went to volntr at GKtW that night. And who strolls by - but the "Goofy Family". I made a bee line to them, and his mom was all tears. She said he hadn't taken the hat off all day long (not even during HISTA). She said that she couldn't believe I went out of my way to do that for them - said it was my pleasure and I wanted to. Again, hugs and tears all around.
I still have the memory of him running with all the other kids and his big green Goofy hat on like it was just "supposed to be there!" - knowing that what ever sickness he had, what ever battle he's been fighting and probably about to lose, that was the farthest thing from his mind that afternoon.
