MK Cars-Themed Attractions at Magic Kingdom

Would you destroy the Mona Lisa and try to paint something better over it? Not apples to apples but the concept is the same. Don’t replace something if you can’t do something conclusively, objectively, incontestably better. When was the last time Disney did that? If ever? Is Mission Space better than Horizons? Test Track? Journey Into Imagination? MMRR? Tiana? Etc. The list goes on. Disney constantly replaces things and doesn’t build anything better.

Paint over a copy of the Mona Lisa? Sure

I think Galaxy's Edge is better than what was there before, Pandora is better than Camp Mickey and Minnie - so it can be done

Definitely don't think it should be done willy Billy and definitely not convinced this is the right move - I certainly wouldn't do it. Just don't agree that it just can't be toughed, full stop, no exceptions

I am not convinced the specifics of this change are a net positive but I think just about anything at WDW, especially MK which is a copy of the original, can be replaced
Magic Kingdom isn’t just a bad copy of Disneyland. Nor is it just bigger. It makes use of its unique site and configuration. Frontierland in particular is part of a larger story and has a completely different spatial organization than its counterpart at Disneyland.

Many of the points that you and some other people here are making sound like they are coming straight from corporate. I'm sure the vast majority of park guests don't care about "efficient use of space" or "maximizing ROI" or anything like that
But we're not talking about the parks as purely consumers. We're talking about the parks as part of how they are designed, operated, and will function as a business in the future as well.

If you only want to focus on being a consumer - yes, none of this is within your field of view.. just the results of it. If you are talking about park design and operations -- very much part of the discussion.

Hearing arguments about how poor of a decision it was to build the RoA and TSI is a slap in the face to Walt, Roy, and WED.
Where were people criticizing the choices from 1970s?
WDW has been coasting on the foundation WED built for the last 20+ years. The more this new crop of “Imagineers” rip out what WED built, the weaker the foundation of WDW is.

Is it not possible that the park's needs and wants can be different now than they were 50yrs ago?

it's not "just a bad copy" but it isn't the original with the historical significance that contains

and everything else you said can still exist with things changing - or it could be part of a larger new story that is even better. Things don't have to stay static for the next 50 years just because they were there for 50 years

Agreed they don't have to stay static but I'm of the opinion that they at least need to keep the theme of the park and land intact.

I for one am looking forward to Cars coming. I understand those that will miss the riverboat but this is going to be more popular and actually make me stay in Frontierland after riding BTM and Tiana's. Magic Kingdom's RoA has always been a shadow of what Disneyland and Disneyland Paris' RoA are, getting worse as each form of water transport closed. The only thing from the RoA I remember is the Native American scene, and that's mainly because the Railroad passes through it. The combination of Cars and Villains replacing RoA is going to give us 4 attractions compared to the 2 they're closing. I do think a rally race through a national park fits Frontierland and if the vehicles weren't themed to Cars, it would be better received.

Next up? Likely Autopia, maybe Jungle Cruise.
with all the more interesting attractions they've taken out (Mr. Toad, Snow White, etc.), it will never not astound me that the Speedway - an experience the likes of which can be found in virtually near any local amusement park - is still standing. they've already shortened the track time and time again, the next logical step would be to level it (which they should've done well over a decade ago)

Guess I am more ok with adjusting the theme - do still want "a" theme though and this new theme, with Cars is questionable at best to me

Cars and Villains are so far away, who knows what we will end up with after the "scope cuts" are made.

Scope cuts and operational and maintenance issues is what worries me with Cars specifically.

What will we end up with, and will it work is what I worry about.

Anything can happen in the years and years this will take to complete.

Look at what happened to Future World in EPCOT.

Still popular though - it is my son's favorite attraction at all of WDW, one we usually wind up doing multiple times each trip

Not saying that doesn't mean it shouldn't be replaced or at least updated/changed but there is a segment of the guests that do still like it

I am definitely less against the change than others (though still not what I would do) but definitely am frightened of the scenario that they get rid of the rivers then have serious budget cutes and we get a lessened version of Cars Land and Villains land is indefinitely paused

they should def update the speedway to electric cars at least, maybe change the fiberglass bodies but I kinda like the funky old one. Retrofit the existing cars with electric drivetrains would be a cheap update imo.

I think someone else brought this up recently but do we know why they announced electric cars in the CA version and not FL?

I think the logical assumption on that is that Autopia is staying at DL but that the Speedway at MK is going to go the way of the submarines and sink.

The rumor is that this mysterious second Cars attraction is essentially a replacement for the Speedway so that they can close it and use that land in Tomorrowland for something else.

To clarify, technically "scope cuts" as they will have used the budged money amount of money but cant do everything they intended to do.

Ugh I hate that the cars ride is a thing because (in addition to the other obvious reasons) now I feel like it makes my dream of the speedway becoming a Sugar Rush racing ride even more unlikely
