Carry on tripod

Has anyone had any experience with flying with a tripod? I'm not planning on checking a bag.

I might consider getting a Gorillapod that will fit easily into my messenger bag if my larger tripod (20" folded) will not be permitted on.

Good question, i've never taken one in carry on - hopefully someone who has can answer. Gorilla Pod would be a good choice depending on what you are intending to use it for.

My major concern with the Gorillapod is not being able to find somewhere to put it down. Though I guess I have that concern with the full size tripod too. Sadly I'd have to get the more durable Gorillapod to accommodate for the weight of my dSLR.

If you're going to buy the heavy duty gorillapod, you might want to look at other options. To me, the only reason to have a GP is for the clamping capabilities. But I've never been a fan of just how dead they really are or that I'd trust that much weight on one.

Think about a tabletop (Sunpak & Slik have several) or a Gary Fong Flipcage. Definitely spend some time on the B&H website and check out the possibilities.

I have a Gorilla Pod in various sizes, and really, I use the DSLR very little. I feel its fine on a compact, but I worry about it with a DSLR. I certainly wouldn't want to hang it on a railing. I wouldn't mind using it as a table top.

I emailed my airline (AirTran) and they informed me that there is no problem with carrying on a tripod as long as the overall dimensions (height + length + width) of the folded tripod are less than 55 inches.

And yeah, I have a light weight Gorillapod that I got from Woot.com a couple years ago. It just collapses under the weight of my dSLR, though. The only thing I would consider it for would be as a mount point for my video camera for fireworks (if I could find a place to mount it).

Wow, that's a large one. Each trip I think think think about should I shouldn't I. In the end I always chicken out and pack my tripod at the last minute. The last thing I want at the airport is to find out I can't take it on. Then what? Not worth it for me since I always have one bag that I check.

I never check, unless im on southwest or jet blue (free bags) and even then I wont check if im connecting. I take out all the chance of having my baggage and valuables lost.

I bought a trekpod go specifically for taking to the parks with me. Its perfect as it is four pieces that screw together and are kept in a case the size of a snooker cue case. It is a walking stick / monopod / tripod with the bottom section having 3 small fold out legs. It supports my D300 no problem and with the legs being the size they are, you can stand up close to the tripod next to railings on a busy walkway without getting in the way of other guests.
