I've wished they made the first scene the entry scene (with an operable curtain). Doing so would open up the current load and unload theaters for additional settings.

 Bite your tongue! That was the worst version ever!

Perhaps, but there's an entire generation that have never seen that version of the show in person, myself included. While I'd much rather see the original 1964 version make a return I can't deny that paying homage to the 1975 show would be fitting as well; to celebrate the Magic Kingdom's history IN the Magic Kingdom.

I think it should be left alone, except for the final scene. Maybe they should import some of the ideas from its sequel, Horizons, and give the future a better look. And they might want to fix the seats in the theatre, because they were not very comfortable last time I went in there.

Even if its uncomfortable or not, Its a good place to take a nap in. ;) (like ive seen a few napping while i watched it)

Here's some food for thought. If TDO markets the 40th as some 40 years of memories or 40 years of magic, I wonder if any rumors we had from earlier in the year would have the Carousel of Progress closing for a new ending that would open by the 40th with either a new year set off into the future or a retro future that would compliment the theme of nearby space mountain.

PoTC, HM, Space Mountain, Jungle Cruise, Hall of Presidents, Peoplemover, and It's A Small World have all gotten some kind of recognizable refurbishment, all within 2005. Other than the Tiki Room, the Carousel of Progress is the only Disney classic that hasn't been significantly refurbished. Can you even count swiss family?
