Carousel of Progress closing to make room for a new "thrill ride"?

Sorry if I am double posting. I would bet this has been discussed before, but I did a search and could not find what I am looking for.
On page 525 of the 2007 Unofficial Guide there is a "peek behind the scenes" box that mentions Carousel of Progress will be reportedly closing soon to make way for a new thrill ride in the Magic Kingdom, and that some of the imagineers are proposing it be rehabbed as a walk-through exhibit for Innoventions at Epocot.
Any info on what this new "thrill ride" might be would be appreciated, or please direct me to a previous thread if this has already been discussed.

It's from Jim Hill, who gets some things right, also gets a lot of inaccruate, and "blue sky" ideas, many of which never come true. I wouldn't believe it anytime soon, especially the walkthrough Innoventions idea.

There isn't a lot of room for a large E-ticket in that area.

Not to mention that both MGM and DAK - and even Epcot to an extent - can use a new E-ticket more than MK does.

Who exactly is Jim Hill? I've seen his name alot on this forum, but I am not real sure of who he is.

Basically a Disney fan that runs a website and has a few inside connections.

He will very often take a small rumor he hears and try to make it bigger than it actually is.

someone would have linked it eventually.

also, this rumor was from a year or 2 ago. the CoP building was going to be knocked down and they were gonna build some kind of Little Green Men ride (from the Toy Story fame). There was also a rumor that a big Incredibles ride was going there (with the robot arm technology), but Universal grabbed the rights to that technology. So, for right now, CoP is here to stay. (thank the lord)

Amen, I love COP, it looked pretty good last week, and by that I mean, at least the theater rotated for all the scenes :animwink:

*Supposedly* the plan was to knock down CoP and the Skyway station and put something in that large area. I'm sure Lee or Corrus could elaborate.

i remember last year, when i heard these rumors, i thought it was gonna be my last chance to ride it. So, I went on it an extra number of times just cuz i wanted to cherish the memories. I am so glad to hear that I get to see it (At least) for one more summer!

There is an appropriate mix of replace and refurb that Disney needs to maintain. While some attractions are old and dated, they carry value in both sentiment and ties to Walt.

Carousel of Progress, while high in need of "refurb" is not in need of "replacement."

I can only hope that the WD Company and the powers that be understand the value of this attraction that was one of Walt's originals and keep it. Though, I'm sure without a sponsor, it's expensive to maintain, not only the attraction components but the moving auditorium itself.

I would be very depressed if CoP were to get replaced by something else. I am a fan of the Disney classics (SSE, CoP, HM, PotC, JC, etc), so if anything were to happen to any of them, I would be very bummed out...

I have the 2007 WDW Unofficial Guide but haven't read it because I am giving it to a couple that will be headed there in 2 weeks. I've read them before and they provide a wealth of information that the Burnbaums book doesn't tell you.

However, This is the first edition that I noticed all of the Jim Hill comments in it. Since I read this post I wanted to see for myself. While reading I saw a lot of information that he mentioned was either wrong or his own opinion. Don't believe everything you read on his site.

A related note--was the CoP theater spruced up in the past two years? I remember finding the seats and stage in a pretty shabby and sorry state on my February 2005 visit, but was thrilled this past February 2007 to find what seemed to be new, clean seats and barely any trace of wear anywhere in the theater. I'm quite sure I wasn't imagining things, and I'm just curious when this much-needed cleaning took place. I know that kind of work means very little in terms of Disney's intention to keep or replace the attraction (I hope to God they don't do the latter), but I took it as a good sign that at least they hadn't forgotten it.

Sadly, they only did ONE theater. I ride it every time I'm there and I've only managed to get into the nice, new seats once. And I'm there a lot.

I was there Saturday and it was sad to see in the third scene the father was crossed eyed and it looked like some kind of liquid? was coming out the corners of his mouth.
