Carousel of Progress + An old question put to rest

Here is the standard Disney policy:

"We are pleased to hear from our visitors and welcome your comments regarding our products and services. Unfortunately, however, our long-standing company policy does not allow us to accept or consider creative ideas, suggestions, or materials other than those that we have specifically requested."

We should all send e-mails asking Disney to refurbish the COP!!

Just sent one my self:

May 12, 2005

To whom it may concern,

My fiancé and I have been fans of the Disney theme parks since we were young children. She has eighteen Walt Disney World vacations under her belt and I six, with our second trip together coming up in September. We have long been fascinated by the experiences to be had in the parks, the Magic Kingdom in particular.

Through the years many changes have been made at the Magic Kingdom, we have seen attractions come and go. This is to be expected in an evolving environment like Walt Disney World. However there are several exceptions, attractions of both nostalgic and historical value. Attractions we believe Walt him self would never think to retire. One of those being Carousel of Progress. We have been saddened in recent years to see the attraction in seasonal operation and devastated to hear rumors of its permanent closure. This attraction is one of very few attractions left that Walt had a hand in. Its outlook on the future is an inspirational one, that in it's self suggests the evolution of Walt Disney World. To take this ride out of commission for good would be a travesty and contradict the message it's been sending out to visitors through the decades. What the attraction needs is some time for refurbishment and an update so that it may continue to evolve with the Magic Kingdom and the rest of Walt Disney World. Carousel of Progress' timeless message needs to continue reaching the ears of visitors for many years to come.

We hope any thought given to closing this wonderful attraction will be reconsidered in the weeks, months and years to come.

Thank you for taking the time to read.

Sincerely,

I'll also be sending the same letter out to all those on the list lol. The list being the one we see Grizz post oh so often. :)

It may not do a thing to sway Disney in their decision about CoP but it can't hurt to try. So :p to all you nay sayers! :D

DisJosh, you're writing in the SPIRIT of the Carousel of Progress: man has a dream (of keeping the CoP) and follows the dream with mind and heart (through writing intelligently with expression)!

I love the letter! I'm so glad you are emailing AND sending it to the executives!

basically, they enjoyed my suggestion and take my email very seriously "and shared it with the Vice President of the Magic Kingdom so that he can look at it and show it to the tomorrowland team as well as the imagineering team and see what they can do as far as that attraction is concerned."

Wow... that's unexpected! Usually they run from creative suggestions like they're the plague (legal stuff, of course). I think once, years ago, I just said something to the effect of 'EPCOT needs new attractions' in an unrelated email and got the boilerplate legal response (someone has posted it in this thread in response). I didn't make that specific complaint (I can't remember what the email was about), but whatever it is that I said was equally vague.

It's nice that they called, though. I wrote an email shortly after JIYI opened and an EPCOT executive called me up. Unfortunately I was so flabbergasted that it happened, I was unprepared to put together a cohesive message at the time. In those cases it's hard to think of something to say; 'this ride is godawful' pretty much seemed to cover my point at the time. Then you start to feel a little silly that this person has called you because you're so torqued up about a theme park ride. Oh well. At least I've finally become comfortable with my status as a fanboy since.

Good for you, some one has to stand up for COP. I love that ride! I've said it before and I will say it again. You can't get ride of a classic, it should get a update! Thanks :0)

I'm going to join Thrawn in the bubble deflating business unfortunately. I work for a very large company (bigger than Disney, top 10 world wide... start figuring), and we also draw a lot of attention from customers about our products and services, which lead people to write/call with their complaints or suggestions.

In one of our call centers, there is an individual who's job it is to be the "Office of the President" on the phone to any customers who call and ask for the President. Mind you, this is a $15/hour job, 5000 miles away from our CEO's office. (I work with one of the call centers, not this one though)

So the answer of "I will pass this to the VP of whatever" is a script... no more no less.

Sorry.

It's still unusual even for Disney to *say* it. They usually, as people have said, and like most other big companies, say they refuse to pass it on because of IP-theft etc. So it's very odd for it to be said.

You can't deflate a real Disney fans bubble. It's not possible. :p

If Walt him self was realistic none of what we discuss daily on this message board would exist. We wouldn't be doing Walt right if we didn't at least TRY to stick up for his dreams and ideals.

Changes CAN be made when people like the ones you see here make an effort to instate those changes. Defeatism is not the way of a Disney fan, and it certainly is not the way of a CoP fan. I will continue to voice my opinions and concerns to the Disney company, heard or un-heard. In the end no matter what the outcome at least I'll know that I tried. :)

a) It doesn't hurt to send letters/emails/phone calls. The worse that can happen is that they completely ignore your email. The best that can happen is that your email will make a change.
b) Changes because of viewer response has saved things in the past. Multiple shows like Buffy and Whose Line is it Anyway (which airs on ABCFamily at 8pm mondays) have been saved because people wrote/emailed/called the TV network.
c) She didn't have to call. An email saying the same thing would have worked to, but despite whether or not she was in the exec office of WDW, they took the time to call.

Well said!
Is there a Disney competition for words per minute? :o I don't think I've ever heard someone speak quite so fast!!
I was thinking the same thing.

Michael -- agreed on all of your points. Repeated customer concerns can create change. I'm sure the CSR tracks the data as far as the type of concern to some extent and that is reviewed at some level on a monthly/quarterly basis, etc. I just wouldn't hold your breath hoping that it really will be passed directly on to any VP.
