Caring for Giants Tour

The first day is today. My daughter might really like this, but you don't actually get closer than you would at a regular zoo. It would be cool to get out on the savannah on foot (without paying a gazillion dollars), though. I'm curious to see what this actually includes.

I've got it booked for mid April with my daughter. She likes elephants, so providing it's not terrible it seemed like a good idea. Worst case it will be some quiet time away from the crowds.
Let us know how it is! I guess bloggers don't like elephants; if this were a new bar, there'd be 25 reviews online by now.

It was pretty good. There were around 10 people in our group (give or take), and you go back-stage to a small air conditioned shuttle bus and they drive you to a special viewing area (with a bit of trivia / quiz on the way to keep you entertained), where you spend the next 30 minutes or so looking at and learning about the elephants (the bus ride / walk takes about 15 minutes each way, so roughly one hour total). There you get a talk by an expert, and meet someone from Africa in traditional dress (Botswana in our case, but I'm sure they've got more than one person doing it) that tells you even more about the elephants and what it's like to grow up living around them. We were a bit closer (but not that much) to the elephants than we were on Kilamanjaro Safaris earlier that day, but you can certainly observe them going about their business for longer.

They handed around "items of interest" (dried elephant dung, elephant tail hair, some sort of vocal test machine thing, and a few other bits) and you pass them around the group. At the end they give you a badge to say you've been on the tour. Apparently all proceeds go directly into conservation projects, so that's a big plus.

By the end of it, my 6 year old was a bit bored, but it just about kept her engaged. I found it quite interesting. Not sure I'd do it again, but it was money well spent for a one off experience that's a bit different to what you'd get just sticking to what's included in the entry price.
