Captain EO final show on 12/6 - Disney and Pixar Short Film Festival to be the replacement

Captain EO was a special case of wasted talent though. With so many talented people involved from Francis Coppola, George Lucas and renowned choreographer Jeffery Hornaday to Michael Jackson and Anjelica Huston. The score was even done by James Horner!

Yet even with all of that high-profile talent on-board, the project still somehow turned out to be a trainwreck.

I have seen a few movies that way in the real world. Great actors or actresses and the movies stink. Sometimes all the talent in the world can't pull off a good movie.

What ever they do to replace EO. They should make sure to rip out the old equipment and scrap it so that this video can't make a return for the 60th of MJ death or something. I liked the show. It's still a little fun to watch but I would much rather there be something newer put in it's place. The new thing is allowed to be a show still. Now, GO make me some magic.... :hilarious:

I know who Figment is because I grew up on WDW. But do you really think the general public knows who he is? (And I like Figment. Just don't think he's well known.)
For a company that markets nostalgia, Figment is quite valuable. So valuable that the terrible Journey Into Your Imagination was quickly converted to the slightly-less-terrible Journey Into Imagination With Figment. A ride has to be particularly unpopular to be replaced that quickly.

There's a reason Figgie is on all of the Food & Wine merch this year. Today's drunks grew up on Figgie!

Regarding a replacement of EO, they could do a preview of SW:TFA. They did that for Tomorrowland.

Part of me thinks they waited for WDS to pay to upgrade the projection equipment to digital (for Inside Out or Tomorrowland, can't remember which came first) and they are now just taking advantage of the fact that they have a flexible protection system.

It was Tomorrowland then Inside Out. I was able to see Tomorrowland but missed seeing Inside out at EO Theater.

Nope, not memorable. I still don't know who they are. Just some purple dragon and his red beard friend who constantly talk about Imagination.
That's a poor attraction.

Something like Carousel of Progress or Harrison Hightower III's Tower of Terror are very easy to understand.
Pretty sure a scientist adventurer with a dragon and a blimp is more memorable then "Generic sitcom family that won't shut up about how cool their appliances are" or "Stock evil rich white dude that steals stuff from around the world and only speaks in Japanese".

Heck, most of Hightower and Mystic's backstory relies on having to piece things together from queue illustrations that the average parkgoer probably wouldn't pay attention to.

Oh trust me you will pay attention to that kind of stuff when it's a 1 hour wait or longer wait. (in the era before the iphone)

I guess I misspoke and you misunderstood what I meant. Imagineering will never be able build another attraction without a proven IP because the budget for it will not be cleared. I don't say that in a resentful way, it's just the way it is. I am a member of the Theme Park Engineering Group at my university and we had an Imagineer come speak with us in September. I asked him and he confirmed the both the Marketing and Finance departments have said they have absolutely no interest in buying any attractions from Imagineering unless they're based on something they know will be successful.

I'm interested to hear what you think makes no financial sense within The Walt Disney Company. I'm guessing it's sarcasm (doesn't read well over forums) or the stockholders would be on that lapse in judgement like bloodhounds on the hunt.

I honestly don't think that the exposure Figment has received from the comic book sales rivals the power and reach of Inside Out. I would imagine that a lot of those comic book sales were by comic collectors and older Guests with a nostalgia for the purple dragon - not a very powerful market or an introduction to the next generation. I see Inside Out being a much more viable option for the pavillion.
I can only speak from my own experience, but my four year old daughter saw Figment on here (as somebody's avatar) and immediately wanted to know more about him. When we took her to WDW for the first time this summer, we rode Imagination multiple times because she loved it. We came home with a bunch of Figment merch.

In my own very limited experience, Figment definitely appeals to the next generation.

Figment represents what EPCOT used to be about, Every tech device ever built started with a 'just a little spark' as in 'wouldn't it be cool if i could do X'. There is a plush figment in my office and my lab bench to remind me of that. Also a plush bug mg grandmother gave me when starting out so 'I would always know where the last bug was'.

I resemble that remark. :D

Right on. Unfortunately that EPCOT died in the 90s. Now we're left with a combination of rides that have been ruined by cartoons, and those that Disney hasn't yet figured out a cartoon tie-in for. They ought to just get it over with and rename the park "Magic Kingdom Annex".

Oh, I agree. They retrofit cartoon characters in while the one character they did have from day 1 is grossly underutilized. Hell, they even invented a stupid teddy bear when they could have just sent out the purple dragon for M&Gs and given the plush version 435 outfits for kids to choose and parents to buy. And I would have eaten that up! Happy kids and reminiscent parents = $$$

A little epilogue to my previous post, I was fortunate enough to get by EPCOT Center yesterday for one last viewing of Captain EO! It was awesome to see MJ on the big screen one last time! The theater was about half full, but the show still got applause at the end. It's sad to see it go, hopefully something good (not a stupid cartoon PLEASE) will take its place. It's one of the last remnants of the late, great EPCOT Center.
