I have to agree I seen it once and don't feel the need ever to see it again.
And we forgive you for that!I love Michael. Always have. Always will.
It's absolutely dated, but I for one am glad it came back. For one, my parents always told me about this mysterious attraction, and it was one mysterious attraction from the past (along with Horizons, World of Motion, etc.) that I could actually experience for myself. And second, I only ever knew MJ as this weird person and never understood why he was famous. This film showcased his talent and gave me a better understanding of why he was so talented and his dancing ability. I wish they would have updated the effects and the screen quality before bringing it back. I guess before long I'll be ready for something different, but for nowI like Captain EO purely from a nostalgic standpoint.
But...it's dated. And the effects are pretty terrible in the post-Jurassic Park age.
For instance...the little flying monkey thing? When he turns to fly away at the end, half of him is missing, where the puppeteer's arm was before being composited against the blue screen.

I agree, part of the reason I like Star Wars (Original trilogy) is because of the effects, but still a little "cleaning up" like they have done with Star Wars (seriously, I saw it for the first time four years ago and the effects looked great to me after a clean up) would not have been unwarranted.Personally, I think the effects look great because they're dated.
Bad stop motion and puppets are always more enjoyable to look at than bad CGI.
...not that EO has bad effects at all, mind you.
I really like EO, Terminator 3D, and Muppetvision because, for the most part, they have real sets and real models, which stands up to repeat viewing a lot better than CGI does.
No, the Fantasmic preshow is definitely worse. I like Captain EO. It's fun. Definitely better than Honey, I Shrunk the Audience
Well, given you went after me in January, I would say yes! My best friend went with me. I got her on Captain EO, SGE, Tiki Birds...she never once complained. If she wasn't wild about something, she would shrug. We're sitting there listening to these two goofs, and I'd never seen them before (I've heard they only do the earlier show, and we usually do the later one, but that night there was only one show) and she looks over at me and says, "This is so stupid." I laughed and promised her the actual show would be better. What is the fantasmic pre show? Are you referring to the new addition of CMs entertaining the crowd for 30 minutes? I saw through that twice in January it that really is boring! I would rather sit in peace and listen to the same soundtrack that has been played for years vs watch them

Still love it. Though I did see it originally with Makin' Memories. And lasers. And smoke machines.
Its from a time when EPCOT Center was still awesome.
I don't mind Captain EO, but it's probably pretty embarrassing for your average guest for it to still be there.
God bless you. I have the same opinion and immediately throw EO & people who are quick to the SGE trigger in the "Worst @ WDW" threads that pop up. I catch flak because some people still really like this attraction?!?!?!?!? I have suggested better uses of the area (Fun with DVC or Gout and You) It is horrible even without the obvious unseemliness that shall not be spoken.Hey I don't know about anyone else but that was the worse 20 minutes wasted on our vacation, Disney really needs to get rid of that and get a better attraction
I'm not talking about CGI here..puppetry defeats CGI every time.
I'm talking moments where the bluescreen compositing simply does not work.
You can tell that the producers only made one Fuzzball puppet to use for the entire short. As such, when he turns and flies away, you can see where his rear end has this crazy concave area from where the puppeteers hand is inserted. Also, one of his legs disappears.
Compare that to the Mogwai puppets created for Gremlins 2. Each of the evil Mogwai characters had multiple puppets made...a hero puppet for close ups with the articulated face and hands, a basic hand puppet for long shots, and a lower body hand puppet to simulate them jumping or running. Typically there were about 3-4 of each type puppet because of the amount of use they got on the set. And these guys only had about 2-3 minutes of screen time total.
In the case of Gizmo, he had all the same puppets made, and there were large-scale animatronics built so they could capture subtle emotions that the smaller puppets were unable to make.
Also, compare that same final scene from EO...it's obvious that Fuzzball isn't sharing the scene with the other characters. 1. He's got this crazy white halo around him, 2. He's got his own focus thing going on where the camera where he appears to be floating above the rest of the film.
Once again...Gremlins 2:
And...the Terror Dogs from Ghostbusters:
In both instances, there is still that crazy focus thing going on where the character appears to float above the film, but you can see where it's been minimized as much as possible. With Gizmo's dance, they alternated between the full body bluescreen puppet and an actual puppet interacting with the environment. They also adjusted the lighting on the bluescreen puppet so that he matches the lighting with the actual set.
With the terror dogs, they move so fast that they can instantly cut to the full size puppet.
Just returned from WDW and we saw Captain EO twice. Both times the theater was full and why do people clap at the end of it? Never could figure that out...
