Canon lens opinions

I did a search and didn't really find anything I was looking for, but I'm looking to finally upgrade from the standard starter lenses. I use a Rebel Xti and was looking for something 2.8 that I can use in dark rides and for nite time outdoors (especially the MK parades). I THINK I can be flexible on $. So, what does everyone else use ? Please be as specific as you want. Thanks.

With the limited high ISO capabilities of the XTi, a 2.8 zoom will not fit the bill for dark rides or nighttime parades. You will need a prime 1.8 or 1.4. Now, if you upgrade to a newer camera capable of a clean 3200, a 2.8 would work, but then you have the expense of a 2.8 (which is more expensive than the prime to begin with) AND the new camera.

I'd recommend the Sigma 30mm f/1.4.

As Tom says above, shooting dark rides is going to be real tough. I struggle like heck even with a f1.4 (but my camera doesn't have great high ISO performance). If you are really looking for good dark ride shots, you are going to need the f1.4 and a body that can ideally do ISO3200.

I find the 24-70 to be a great every day, perfect lens for everything. FANTASTIC piece of glass.

The question you have to weigh is balancing you desire for a dark ride lens 30/1.4 vs something that you can use just about everywhere 24-70.

Personally i would go for the 24-70. Thats just me.

Thanks for all the great input gang. I do have a 50mm 1.8 which works great for me most of the time, but it's what I guess everyone is calling a prime lens. No zooming capability. Some things come in too far.

I've narrowed my lenses down, but now that I started investigating the 50D, I may upgrade. Oh well, can't take it with ya.

Soooooooo, any opinions on tripods ?

Thanks again everyone.

I too would avoid the 50D. Pick up a used 40D instead, or even an old 5D. Only get a 7D if you want the video features and 18MP (even the new T2i would be fine for that though). You won't notice much of an improvement from camera to camera as much as you would a new lens. You can always buy a new body and sell your old one, but the lenses are what you keep for years and years.

As previously mentioned, the 24-70 f/2.8L is a fantastic lens for every day use. That lens is on my camera the majority of the time when I visit the parks. If you can't see yourself upgrading to full frame in the future, then you can get the 17-55 f/2.8 IS, but I have heard it has a cheaper build quality than the L lenses and for $1,000 you want something that'll last. If I am going in the evening/night or want to travel light, I generally bring my 50 f/1.4.

Keep in mind that the 24-70 is a large and heavy lens, and when put it on a Rebel body (like the XTi) it will not be too comfortable. You can invest in a battery grip to help offset the weight and provide a larger area to grip. If you want a bigger lens, getting a grip is very beneficial.

I agree with everyone else that I would avoid the upgrade to 50D, and spend the extra money on a good lens.
I own both the xti and a 50D, as well as most of the Canon L series zoom line, and the only time a carry the 50D over the xti is for high ISO situations. However I have not invested a ton of money in a expensive prime lens. I picked up the canon 35mm f/2, and the 50mm f/1.8 for less than $100 each and that is what I use for dark rides.

My standard lens for my 50D is the Canon 17-40mm f/4L and I use the Canon 28-105mm f/4L for my daily use of the xti. I know that you want a 2.8 but that add A LOT of money and weight over the f/4. I own the 24-70mm f/2.8L and it to heavy for the xti. I would buy the 28-105 f/4L and spend the money you save on a good prime.
