I always thought it odd that they do not allow celebrity singers (like Steven Curtis Chapman) a solo singing opportunity...even just a verse or two of an exisiting choir song.

I wonder if it has something to do with quality control. Yes, a true recording artist might be good enough, but what if a TV or movie celebrity THINKS they can sing but can't? How does Disney tell them no?

But it looks strange when a professional singer is forced to stand there silently in the dark as the choir belts it out.

Two points:

I think they can sometimes. We went several years ago, when Sandi Patty was the narrator, and she sang a song as lead (but still with the choir); and someone else above said that SCC sang with the choir (even though not miked)... perphaps as a servant (like Christ himself).

This is a true traditional Christmas pageant, which presents the story of the coming of the Christ child as the "star" of the show (so to speak), with "choirs of angels" heralding his arrival (as lowly as it was) as the narrated story progresses. So, inserting a random celebrity solo into it would disrupt the narrative in most cases, and take away from the program.

I think that the celebrities who participate appreciate this, and actually enjoy doing it. It is very moving.

P.S.: Thanks for the updated list. Any reports from folks who have seen it this year?

P.P.S.: (Off topic). Today is Walt's birthday. Check out the main Disney.com site. Good historical stuff on the front page there for today in tribute to him...

When we saw Sandi Patti a few years back, she did sing, but was not mic'd. I was wanting her to belt out "O Holy Night" but she didn't! Same thing with SCC- he sang, but was not mic'd. Both did wonderful jobs. Also, have seen Gary Sinise- INCREDIBLE! For someone you associate with a "secular" lifestyle (as opposed to Sandi Patti and SCC- both contemporary Christian recording artists), he did an extremely passionate, heart-felt presentation. I was very surprised and delighted. Probably my favorite CP! Got to meet him afterwards, and he was so nice- highlight of that trip!

we went to see Neil on Monday and we watched it from the walkway because the standby line was so long. It was a good show from what I watched of it. I would love to see Jim Caveizel do the narrator. I loved him in Passion of the Christ but Neil was ok.
