Enchanted Kingdom is a theme park at the Walt Disney World Torino Resort located just outside of Turin, Italy. The park opened on 01 September 1988. Accompanied by two on-site hotels and featuring a wide collection of classic Disney attractions, the park was an instant hit. The park was the very first Disney park located in Europe and just the second international Disney park ever following Tokyo Disneyland.

The park is comprised of eight themed lands: Mainstreet, Adventureland, Bayou Country, The Hundred Acre Wood, Frontierland, Toontown, Tomorrowland, and Fantasyland.

The park icon is Belle's Enchanted Castle, a representation of the castle from the 1991 film Beauty & the Beast. However, this was not the original icon of the park. Initially, the park's castle was Sleeping Beauty Castle, an upscaled version of the castle at Disneyland. It remained so for a decade until in 1998, the park announced that it was going to be getting a new castle to go along with a large expansion to the park's Fantasyland. The new castle opened in 2000 followed shortly by the Fantasyland expansion.

The park has gained several new additions since it's opening in 1988. As the resort it ultimately became a part of, the park has continued to receive new attractions and features over the years, all the way up to the present day.

Come with me now as we take a trip around the various lands of the park. For now, we're just going to look at the details of each individual land. But, coming soon, we'll be taking a look at individual attractions throughout the park.

Let us begin with an iconic entrance.

A classic Disney mainstreet, though not as explicit in its imagery as its American counterparts.

It was decided that this resort’s version of Main Street was not going to make such explicit references to Walt’s hometown, but rather present a street that evokes recognizable American small town iconography that European guests may recognize from American media. Despite clear evocations of Americana, Imagineers decided to avoid dipping into the patriotic vibes of the American mainstreets, eschewing red, white, and blue bunting, American flags, and references to American historical figures. In it's place, a general celebration of the comforts and simplicity of turn of the century American aesthetics.

Though conceptually there is not as much of a deep dive into America beyond the small town American spirit, this is a familiar sight to anyone who has experienced Disney in America. The long mainstreet leads from the entrance gates that is topped by the train station, down toward the main hub aimed toward the castle. From the hub, arms spoke out to allow you to venture into the various lands of the park.

The first land you will encounter on your left from the main hub is Adventureland. This land is where you will find the spirit of adventure in all of its various forms, both scary and thrilling. Similar to Magic Kingdom’s Adventureland, WDW’s version is divided into two sub-lands, however they are far more distinctive than at WDW in Florida.

The first sub-land is Explorer Outpost. This sub-land is themed to the 1930s era of vintage exploration. The buildings are modeled after that era and the area is soundtracked by adventure music that sounds as if it’s played from a gramophone nearby. The vegetation is thick in this area as if you’re walking through the jungle. The attractions are hidden from the main pathways, requiring guests to take paths through the trees toward the queues, leaving the main pathways feeling like they really are in the middle of the dense jungle vegetation.

The second sub-land is Agrabah, themed to the city of the same name from Aladdin. This section was not originally a part of the land, but was added on an expansion pad present at the corner of the existing Adventureland in the early 2000s. This sub-land plants you on the streets of Agrabah. Unlike the other sub-land, the attractions here are very noticeable but blend in well with their surroundings, making them look natural. The area is soundtracked by various needle drops of the adventurous Aladdin score.

The two sub-lands are not visible to each other. They’re separated by a thicket of trees and a long wall and arch that on the Explorer Outpost side looks like a jungle ruin, but on the Agrabah side looks like part of the city’s architecture.

Agrabah
01. Aladdin’s Magic Carpet Ride
A dark ride in which guests board a magic carpet to join Aladdin, Jasmine, and Genie on a magic carpet ride around Agrabah as they try to foil Jaffar’s plot to take over the kingdom.

Make a right turn just past the archway entrance to Agrabah and you will find yourself entering the transposition to the next land.

Bayou Country takes deep into the Louisiana bayou to uncover all of the secrets, magic, mystery, and more that rests within. This land is designed to make you look as if you’re actually venturing through the bayou, complete with lots of waterways, trees, and mossy areas. If you look in some of the waterways you’ll even spot some simple animatronic gators and other creatures around the bayou.

Of the two rides present here, one is in the midst of a huge change. Like its American counterparts, this park’s Splash Mountain closed in 2022 after it was decided to give the attraction a new theme. The Imagineers who focused their attention on Enchanted Kingdom as well as the park’s management and leadership decided they were happy to have a Princess & the Frog ride, but courted leadership to get their own unique version with a completely different story to it.

The resort president said that they wished to continue to give Enchanted Kingdom its own unique identity as a castle park despite its origins as a fairly faithful clone. Knowing that the European audience agreed with this sentiment, Disney leadership approved it. Despite carrying the same name and same external appearance as it’s American counterparts, the ride is completely different and features an entirely different storyline for guests to enjoy.

The rest of the land remains mostly as it was when the park opened, save for it being made smaller in the northern corner to accommodate a new land that was added in the late 90s (The Hundred Acre Wood).

RIDES
01. Tiana’s Bayou Adventure
A flume ride that follows Tiana and her alligator pal Louis as they search high and low across the New Orleans bayou to find Louis’ lost prized trumpet so he can entertain the people at the annual Mardi Gras celebration. Along the way, they will receive help from the various critters in the Bayou, but have to be careful to avoid the vengeful spirit of Dr. Facillier who, according to legend, haunts the Bayou.

02. Pirates of the Caribbean
Enchanted Kingdom’s spin on the classic boat ride. Under the cover of darkness, a confiscated pirate ship sneaks out of a New Orleans port with a motley crew of sailors hungry for a life of piracy. Following them are guests in a little boat on the water. Following a raid on a port, the ship ventures out to open sea which is not only the realm of pirates, both living and dead, but also the kingdom of the most ferocious, bloodthirsty beast of the sea. Any poor soul who treads into its kingdom must suffer the consequences. Originally a clone of the Florida version of the ride, this ride closed for extensive refurbishment in early 2000s for a remodel that shook up its story and added some new show scenes.

TABLE SERVICE DINING OPTIONS
01. Bayou Terrace
A Creole restaurant themed to a veranda overlooking the Bayou that leads out toward the channel to access the wide open sea. The restaurant sits inside the Pirates show building. It is this park's version of Blue Bayou.

At the very top corner of Bayou Country, around the corner from Pirates, you will transition into a land that occupies a former section of Bayou Country as well as a partial bit of an expansion pad at the park’s perimeter. This land is The Hundred Acre Wood.

Formerly part of this area was a small water area (roughly the same footprint as Tiana’s Bayou Adventure) used for a daily show in the Bayou, in the mid 90s this was closed down for the introduction of a new land that acts as the smallest land in the park. Covering that converted space as well as a small fraction of an expansion pad that may one day also get some use by the neighboring Frontierland, The Hundred Acre Wood acts as the only Winnie-the-Pooh themed full land in the world.

This charming little land may be the smallest in the park, but that’s perfect for the little kids who will no doubt fall in love with it. As you venture through the tall trees of the Hundred Acre Wood, you will find various familiar locations from your favorite Pooh stories, soundtracked by instrumental versions of your favorite songs from the franchise.

Moving up and to the right a bit, you will exit the woods and step out onto the wild frontier.

Thematically, this Frontierland has a good deal in common with the Disneyland Paris version of the land in that there is a central narrative that ties it all together.

Here, we are introduced to the fictional town of Matchstick Junction, a frontier town that is out on the furthest edge of the established frontier. Established by the shady Big Thunder Mining Company as a company town, the town was overseen by the mysterious Nathanial Vile. The men of the company town reported to work each day in the dangerous Big Thunder Mine while Nathanial stayed reclusive in his mansion that overlooked the town up on Thunder Plateau. The employees and their families resented Vile, knowing that he willingly sent his men into a dangerous, unprotected, unsafe mine all in favor of his precious profits. Rumor had it that he spent his days sitting in his study counting the cash made on the backs of the brave men who ventured into the mountain.

Everyone knew that one day a disaster would come.

That disaster did eventually come on a day known as The Day of Thunder. Deep from within the mine, a massive explosion left all of the men inside missing and presumed perished. The devastated families demanded Mr. Vile do something to help ease their pain, but he refused to take any responsibility. One day, the grieving loved ones marched all the way up to the mansion and forced their way inside. Mr. Vile and the entire staff of his mansion were never seen nor heard from again. The grieving families left Matchstick Junction, leaving the place a ghost town.

It is said that the spirits of the miners lost in the mine accident haunt the entire town, but most of the reported activity is concentrated on the daunting Big Thunder Mountain and the abandoned mansion on top of the plateau overlooking it.

A mine train coaster that puts guests on a haunted runaway train as it traverses the dangerous paths of Big Thunder Mountain and takes them right into the exploded mine shaft.

The remaining company riverboat that ferried the families to and then later from the company town has been refurbished and is taking guests on a leisurely trip around the Goldrush River

04. Goldrush River Rafts
Rafts which ferry guest over to the island in the middle of the river

ATTRACTIONS
01. Goldrush River
A river that encompasses all of Frontierland (that technically also extends into Adventureland though it is hidden from the walkways via the planting of thick vegetation and trees so as to not break the land immersion) in which guests can take a ride on a riverboat or raft to the island in the center of the river.

02. Little Matchstick Island
An artificial island in the middle of the river in which guests can take a stroll visit obstacle and ropes courses, go digging for buried artifacts sponsored by SEA’s recent expedition to the abandoned company town, find hidden caves and grottos to explore, and uncover more secrets and mysterious about the ill fated town.

This Toontown comes on a scale the likes of which you’ve never seen before.

The idea behind this version of the land was the question of what if this felt more like an actual, densely populated town of beloved cartoon friends? This led the designers of the park to create the largest Toontown in the world. This land occupies the northwest section of the park and is accessible via a pathway underneath the tracks for the railroad like it is at Disneyland. When you come out of the pathway, you’re plopped down into what almost feels like a cartoonfied Mainstreet

From the park’s opening up until 2017, at the end of the avenue there was a large building known as Toontown City Hall which was used as a meet and greet and show space. Guests could go left or right to get to the various other attractions in the area. However, in mid 2017, the city hall was closed to make way for a new Mickey and Minne starring dark ride inside of the El Capitoon Theatre which, upon it’s opening in 2019, now acts as the attraction occupying the end of the main avenue. Guests can still venture to the left or right for the other attractions.

RIDES
01. Mickey & Minnie’s Toontown Joyride
A trackless dark ride in which guests ride alongside Mickey and Minnie in an out of control, hilarious joyride through the streets and neighborhoods of Toontown. This ride acted as the basis for what became Mickey & Minnie’s Runaway Railway in the US parks. This ride was the initial concept, but the people in charge of this resort requested that if it were to travel out to the other parks, that they wanted a unique version. This led to a sort of spin-off of sorts for the US parks where they used the same character models and art style, but with a completely different story. There are some similarities, most notably with all versions using the same ride system (albeit in cars rather than a train) and some similarities in specific scenes, but this version is mostly comprises other original scenes and a different overall story. Located inside of the El Capitoon Theatre, this version resembles what became the California version, just on a larger scale.

02. Toontown River Rampage
A water ride in which guests board mini-paddle boats from Steamboat Willie and take a perilous plunge down an angry waterway where they will get drenched by various water gags.

03. Goofy’s Sky School
Despite sharing it’s name with the California Adventure wild-mouse, this is actually a clone of The Barnstormer at Magic Kingdom.

04. Donald’s Bumper Boats
A children’s bumper boat ride themed to Donald Duck.

01. Mickey’s House & Meet Mickey

Differing from most incarnations of this land, Enchanted Kingdom’s version of Tomorrowland is explicitly themed to a vintage view of the future. More specifically, the land is designed from the point of view of someone from 1955 (the year Disneyland opened in California) imagining what they think the future looks like. This allows Imgaineers the opportunity to work the classic Tomorrowland aesthetic without running into the trouble of the land becoming outdated. As such, the area has a sort of retro-future theme, looking less like the world of tomorrow and more like yesterday’s ideas of tomorrow.

Having spent the last couple of months playing SA, getting more of a feel for armchair imagineering, and seeing the potential this idea could have, I am going to CANCEL this version of my concept and instead return to it later.

@spacemt354 reached out to me to get me into the SU game and their game has taught me so much that I just didn't know when I started this concept. Thank you to those who got on board with the shells of concepts above, but I'd like to return to this one day with a new approach. A better approach.

WDW Torino is not dead. This version of it however is.
