Can Walt Disney World get any larger anymore?

Kind of a vague question.

With enough money, just about anything is possible.

could they expand ? Sure they could. But could they do it cost effectively. In some areas, yes, in others no.

Example. Yes, a good chunk of the WDW property is wetlands. You can build on wetlands ..... however the general rule is for ever acre you destroy you have to build 2 acres of artificial wetlands someplace else. Land acquisition aside, the cost to build a wetland environment is quite high. Yes, it has been done, most of the time on the order of a 1/4 acre or so, where a project encroaches onto wetlands, but otherwise is viable, but not at WDW as far as I know.

Clarification

Let me clarify a little. The reason for this discussion was to see if Disney World guests would be open to seeing and experiencing Disney World grow. It's already big. But can it get bigger? or will guests scoff at it.:)

You ask this at a Disney fansite? :lookaroun

While the obvious answer would be yes we would be open to expansion however, I think a lot of people here would agree, my main concern is that they take care of what they already have along with "plussing" the existing parks.

There is plenty enough room for about an Epcot sized park. I saw an Rcid map about future development. The land way west of MK, east of the mk toll plaza, south of FW are all large enough for another theme park.

I don't understand why you guys don't want a 5th gate. No park is ever going to be perfect so I don't understand. A 5th gate would bring something new and fresh. I know new isn't always good but it would bring to us Disney fans who are there 4 times a year something different to experience.

I'm for a 5th park.

I'm certainly not opposed to a 5th park, I just think the money could be better spent.

When we were there in about either 2002 or 2003, we were told on the big behind the scenes tour that Disney had developed 1/3 or the land that they had purchased. They told us 1/3 had to be reserved for wildlife/wetlands. This means that they could double what they have currently built. That boggles the mind a bit.

Kevin and Mona

They said I was daft to build a castle in the swamp, but I did it anyway and it fell over and sank into the swamp. So, I built another castle, it also fell over and sank into the swamp. I built a third castle, it burnt down fell over then sank into the swamp. But the fourth castle stayed up.

I agree with all those who think the focus should be on the current parks and upgrading their conditions and maybe adding to them. Also there are a few forgotten areas such as the former Discover Island.

Add me to the list of folks that would rather see Disney spend money on adding to (and maintaining!) the existing attractions and resorts, not dropping half a billion or more on a third under-realized park or some other distraction.

Because something new could be this:

Or this:

Before opening up another half day park, they should ensure that the four parks that are already there are well-maintained, full day parks. Don't get me wrong, a new park would be awesome, but I think that money would be better used in the existing parks.

EDIT: Missed the comment about the land near Fort Wilderness. I believe the land you are speaking of was de-annexed for Golden Oaks. I could be wrong though.

Your forgetting DisneySea. That also was with DCA and WDS and opened last decade. So who's to say a new park won't be on that level?

DCA is a great park. It's top 10 visited in the nation. I don't understand the hate around it. I thought it was a unique park. What's the issue with it. I can't judge WDS because I never been there.

But no I mean the land south of FW not east of it. That's where Golden Oaks is going.

Because it wasn't on The Walt Disney Company's dime. This company hasn't spent since they overbuilt DLP. Imagineering still has the talent to create incredible parks, but they can't do it if Disney isn't paying for it. If Disney shows that they're willing to spend the kind of money to build a park on the scale of DisneySea, I'm all for it.

DCA didn't feel like a Disney park to me. Yes, the expansion will fix that, but it's nearly ten years late. I haven't been to WDS either, but I've seen little, if any, praise for it.

My bad. Apparently RCID's development map has already accounted for Golden Oaks as developed. In which case, there are a few areas where relatively large parks can be built. There may be small areas of marginally suitable land, but they can probably work with it.

Celebration, the city, was around longer than that....unless you are talking about something else....

I think you are mistaken. Perhaps the following links will convince you otherwise.

http://www.celebration.fl.us/towninfo.html

Current Approximations:
9,000 residents
4,060 homes and condominiums (Breakdown)

Openings:
First Residents Summer 1996
Town Center November 1996
Celebration School August 1997
Celebration Health November 1997
Stetson University Center August 2001
Celebration High School August 2003
Water Tower Place Fall 2005

The History Of Celebration, Fl
Celebration was founded in 1994 on Disney-owned land that had previously been undeveloped (and used for relocating alligators which had been caught near Disney guest areas). Celebration was de-annexed from the Reedy Creek Improvement District. Coincidentally, the original 1967 borders of the City of Reedy Creek covered much of the land that is now Celebration, before the borders of Reedy Creek were moved northeast in 1969 and the town was shortly thereafter renamed to the City of Lake Buena Vista. At that time, this city (along with the City of Bay Lake) covered only portions of the Reedy Creek Improvement District, presumably the portions that were being considered for communities.

The Magic Kingdom parking could be converted to a garage system and the land occupied by the present parking lot made into a park.

The monorails and ferry and TTC (concourse) would remain in operation.

I think DHS & AK need more. DHS needs more rides so that way the 3 really popular ones they have don't have extremely long waits.

Personally, with DHS, I think it should be brought back to a working studio park like it was in the late 90's. Where you could see the different shows being made, being a part of the audience, etc. I remember that one of the animal shows for animal planet was being filmed there in 98-99.
I truly think they need to get back to the basics with DHS and bring it back to its former glory. I still get p****d when I think that they took out the streets of america with all the famous houses from TV shows, yes they could have updated them as the years go by. One idea in respects to expansion, is have the replica of The Golden Oak Ranch where they filmed the early Mickey Mouse Club, Spin and Marty and the live-action movies like The Apple Dumpling Gang, Little House on the Prairie, Roots. I think this could be added to DHS on a smaller scale. I dunno, just my thoughts! Hey, Maybe they could redevelope DHS into The Golden Oak Ranch Park and mix it with current attractions from DHS along with WORKING soundstages! Any Thoughts?
