My niece will be visiting WDW next year for the first time and I wanted to get her (and my sister) familiar with some characters before she goes.

Shes 15 months just now and im looking to get some dvds for her to watch but Im not sure if shes just a little young for them yet.

What do you guys think, and what movies would you recommend?
I'm looking for one classic disney animation and one pixar.

Thanks

As for "too young", you'll get a lot of different opinions. Mine is that taking your child somewhere they'll experience you being happy with them is always a good thing. Your child having seen you happy while spending time with them will be a happier child in life. Bonding can be as important as memories.

She might not remember it when she's older, but you will. She'll enjoy it and for the DVD's I don't think she's too young (I think I watched beauty and the beast around that age).

I don't agree with the bambi recommendation though, one bit (IM SURE YOU ALL KNOW WHICH BIT I'M ON ABOUT) is pretty devastating.

I recommend Toy Story and Snow White

No, they cannot be too young for Disney. My 3 kiddos had their first trips at 14, 11, and 7 months; we brought them younger and younger. No they do not remember their trips but there are memories for my husband and I that we wouldn't have missed!
As for movies both of the older kids loved Monsters Inc at that age for some reason, couldn't get enough of it. The Pooh movies are great too for the little ones. And Nemo was another favorite here too. My 13 month old girl right now always gets excited when Mickey Mouse Clubhouse comes on Disney Junior. She does the hot dog dance at the end.

my personal opinion:

(here goes. brace yourself hahaha)

There is no "too young." I took my older two when they were 2 and almost 1. We've gone every year since, some years twice. While they didn't remember exact experiences, they remembered the place and what it meant. When I took them again, my oldest was 2.5yrs. My son was 1. As soon as I said we're going to Disneyworld, they knew exactly what that meant and got excited.

When it comes to DVDs, you can start them pretty young. My, now, youngest knew who minnie mouse was before she was 2 and she definitely was tracking that chic down when we went lol.

I'm not a Bambi fan.

:sohappy: I totally agree with everything you said! We go every year too. My son's first word, besides momma and dadda, was Mickey....true story!! He was also taking his first steps on his first Disney trip at 11 months. I'll never forget it, we were staying at the Boardwalk and he took his steps in our room.

I agree, there is no too young. Obviously babies are a little more work at the parks and require a little more planning but it is just a different experience. The youngest we took was 16 months and it was fine. He does not remember but we do and they are some great memories.

I agree with the Pooh movies, perfect for that age. Disney's Mickey Mouse Clubhouse is also a perfect show and I believe they have some on DVD. Look to find some DVD'S that are with the Mickey characters there are quite a few out there. My little ones loved Nemo, The Little Mermaid, Cinderella......There is also the Little Einsteins which is very cute. Pixars Monsters Inc is adorable but I am worried about the whole Mosters in the closest thing!

Funny, I totally thought the Monsters thing would start some kind of fear but I think it did the opposite and somehow prevented the whole scared to go to bed thing. It's pretty cute and Randall isn't the worst Disney villain out there. My kids love Mikey and Boo!

i dont think there is ever a "too young" when considering a Disney trip. I will be taking my son for the first time this november, he will be 20 months.

they wont remember much, but you will, and for now, this trip is more about that experience than anything else.

my dvd picks are:

classic: The Lion King

pixar: Toy Story

have a great time!

Thanks for all the comments so far.

Sorry, I should have been a bit clearer, what i meant was do you think she is too young for the movies?

I know she's not too young for WDW. I'm actually looking forward to going with her because I'll then get to do stuff that I wouldn't necessarily get to do :sohappy::sohappy::sohappy::sohappy:

I don't think there is a too young, but I think that you should make sure they know what they are experiencing. If your child doesn't know any princesses or Mickey Mouse, then the place won't have the same meaning as if they were looking forward to "Meeting Mickey". I think they should be old enough, or rather wise enough to know whats going on and who they are seeing.

As for the movies, I would recommend Cinderella and either Toy Story or Finding Nemo.

Another one my kids loved was Lilo and Stitch. The music is fun, Lilo is so cute and Stitch is silly. Winning combo for little ones. We always do the character breakfast at Ohana just to see these 2. Stitch is always good for some fun and silly character interaction for the kids!

I think movies like Winnie the Pooh are good to start with. I wouldn't show any "princess movies" besides Cinderella. We showed my oldest DD Little Mermaid when she was about 2 and she developed a HUGE fear of Ursula. Even now, she is 19 and when we see Voyage of the Little Mermaid I watch her tense up when Ursula come on...

As for going to WDW I think children are never too young, parents just need to know how to handle them. My oldest DD was 6 months her first trip and it was also my first trip to the world. I'm not a big ride person so we really took it slow and just took everything in and thats what I think you have to do when going with a young child. I also think taking them when they are young will get them used to the characters. That way they don't freak out when they see a huge Goofy when they are 4

You'd be surprised as to what they remember

My son was only 17 months on his first trip to the World. I always would put Playhouse Disney for him & by the time we went to Disney he knew all the characters. He came up with his own name for Mickey & we're not quite sure how....Pooka...and he's 3.5 now & still calls him that...which i Love. The amazement in his face when saw Mickey for the first time was priceless (I cried). So they do remember the characters...even at that age! Hope you have a blast and enjoy & take lot's of pics!!

I know She is only 15 months but when we showed this to my middle DD she was around 2 1/2 and couldn't handle Mufasa's death. She loved the movie but everytime that scene came on, she ran out the room crying and wouldn't come back until she heard Hakuna Matata playing.

In my honest opinion, no. My girlfriends cousin ( a year old and a few months ) out of the blue started saying "MACKEY" at first we were thinking to ourselves who in the heck is mackey? Then it came to me, she is looking at my girlfriends earrings I bought her in MK. It had to be obviously Mickey and now every time she sees something with mickey she will yell MACKEY its probably the cutest thing to hear.

I would start with watching movies like Toy Story, Bambi, Disneys Playhouse in the AM hours on Disney channel etc.

Well I WOULDN'T do Sleeping Beauty. Lol.

My niece has loved Little Mermaid for a while, but Monsters Inc scared her. I jut think it all depends on your kid. I was a big Beauty and the Beast and Fox and the Hound fan. I actually wore out my Fox and the Hound VHS. Lion King and Toy Story are also two I remember watching repeatedly.

101 Dalmatians maybe? Only bad thing about them is they dont have a presence in the parks. Most Disney movies do experience a tragedy of some sort so I guess you just have to be careful on which one you pick to show them.

I've always thought bringing babies to WDW was pointless and they are way too young to go. My older sister brought each one of her kids before they were 18 months, I think her first daughter was about 6-7 months when they went. I've always wondered why until this thread, it does make sense to go for the memories you (the parents) get with your baby there. Although your baby wont rememeber you will and that does mean something, not to mention the pics too.

Yup. Just so long as she remembers the happy mom & dad. Some parents are really awful when dealing with their toddler's melt downs.
