Can DVC members upgrade to an AP and still get the discount?

Hey there hi there ho there...

My wife & I are planning on going to WDW near the end of summer. Normally, I'd want to get the annual pass and make sure we go at least one more time within the year. But I don't know how feasible that is this time out. However, I'd like to start prepping for the trip now.

Anyone know if we can buy regular MYW tickets, and then, once we get there but BEFORE we leave, upgrade to an annual pass, but still get the DVC discount?

I'm not positive, but logic says yes. When you upgrade, they credit what you paid for the MYW tickets toward the cost of the AP. If you're entitled to a discount, it would still apply. Ultimately, when you upgrade an MYW ticket, you're functionally just retroactively buying an AP in the first place.

Hey Slappy,

If you are going for more that 4 days, it would be best to add an extra day and the no expiration option. This way, you are only investing a few more dollars for the original ticket as adding days after 4 is relatively cheap.

Then if you decided to go back later, upgrade at that time to the AP.

If you decide not to go back within a year, you still have one day available on that original MYEW ticket to use on your next visit.

The only draw back to this plan is that when you upgrade that ticket to the AP. The begin / expire date is back dated to the original purchase date of the MYW ticket.

I can not be totally sure on the discount, but I would agree with Monty that if you are entitled the discount, you would recieve to no matter when you pruchase or upgrade.

I'm not quite sue that'd work in my scenario. Our trip is for 10 days. To get a 10 day park hopper w/ no expiration would cost $443. To add Water Park Fun & More option would be $496.

Comparitively, an annual pass with a DVC discount is $355, and a Premium Annual Pass is $462.

Now, MAYBE, if I buy the MYW/WPF&M/NE ticket for 496, AND I go back within a year, they might be willing to upgrade my ticket to a PAP at no additional charge (though I doubt I'd get the $34 difference back). But I'd have to have one day left on my pass, and I'd have to go back within a year. If I DON'T go back within a year, I can't retroactively upgrade. And if I don't go back within a year, I think it would make more sense to get 10-day MYW tickets with everything but the No Expiration option. It's "only" $283. If we wind up only using, say, half of our days, maybe I'll upgrade to no expiration, but I'd probably rather upgrade to an annual pass instead.

On the plus side, I'm pretty happy that this sort of thing is the only sort of thing currently weighing on my head. I'll savor the stress-free-ness while it lasts. :)

Just to be clear...

Whether you have a no-expiry ticket or not, you have to upgrade within 14 days of first use of your MYW tickets. After 14 days, all you can do is get credit for the unused portion of the MYW ticket. For example, if you pay $443 for a 10-day hopper w/no expiration, start using the ticket and after 5 days of vacation decide to upgrade to an AP, you get $443 credit toward the AP but your AP effective start date would be the day you first used the MYW ticket. If you go in 15 days after activating the same ticket and using 5 days' admissions, you would only receive credit for $443 less the cost of a five-day hopper w/no expiration toward the cost of a new AP that would start the day you activated it.
