Hello! I am going to WDW in May and for the first time I am bringing my Canon SLR rather than just a cheap disposable camera or small digital. I was wondering if anyone had tips on how to lug, uh I mean carry it around the world? Would it be beneficial to bring the zoom lens and/or extra flash with me?

Also, should I bring it with me on the plane or would it be safer wrapped up some how in my checked bag?

Definately take it in your carry on - baggage handlers have a tendancy to throw bags around for fun.

I would take the zoom around with you - you cant beat the flexibility of having different focal lengths at your disposal for close ups and wide angles. If weight is an issue, I would skip the external flash. Unless you plan on shooting a lot of night portraits, the onboard flash should be sufficient.

I also have a Canon SLR, but I have also carried a Nikon SLR for years. Two things that have worked for me on vacation:

1. A reasonably sized camera bag will always do the trick for absolute safety from bumps and drops. Getting on and off of rides can be brutal on the equipment.

2. If you are prone toward carrying a backpack, which I am, cheap bubble-wrap on cameras and lenses will keep everything safe for an entire trip. It's not too big a deal to roll the equipment out of the wrap when you need it. I use a separate piece for each camera and lens.

OMG!!! Never check your cameras....

I use to shoot professional auto racing, and NEVER would check my Canon bodies or lenses....I carried the 500mm with me on the plane, and my MKIIs and lenses (normally would bring 17-40, 70-200, and 100-400mm) never lefgt my side.

Regarding taking them to WDW, do all the time...normally take two bodies-one with the 17-40mm and the other with the 70-200 or 28-350. If you have a 1.4x take it, well worth it for day time shots....

Of course, now that our youngest is out of the stroller, there is no place to put them, so may just get go with one this year....

thanks for the tips on the bubble wrap! good idea if I decide to use my backpack.

as for the airport - I am just concerned about how much stuff they'll let me carry on. I need my carry on bag and will also have a diaper bag with me so I wasn't sure if I'd be able to also bring my camera bag. Would I be allowed a separate bag for my camera or should I somehow stuff it inside my other bags?

You'll probably find that you're allowed one carry on in addition to a ladies handbag - I'd see about putting your camera in amongst babies essentials for the flight

Ah... flying with cameras. Always fun.

First, i would invest in a small camera bag that will hold both the camera, extra lens and flash. Don't get something huge, i used a slingbag last time i toured the parks with a dSLR. You want something that you can put you camera in in case of rain or just something to put it away in. Bring the extra lens with you for the fun stage shows and the Safari.

Second, Bring the camera as carry-on. Never put a camera in checked luggage. It will not survive.

yeap vote on on camera bag too ... get a sturdy carry on bag to take body and lens(es) .. I've already owned two tamrac ags .. and the never failed me :wave:

I already have a small bag that fits the camera and the extra lens so I think I'll just do that and leave my external flash at home. Now I just need to find a way to shove it into my carry on along with all my other stuff!

Definitely bring it with you on the plane - don't check it.

I just brought mine and i'm a total outfit planner - matching color coordinating outifits with matching bags - and every bag I brought, the camera in its case fit into. And honestly, except for on rides, most of the time it was around my neck and it was not anything to carry it around like that either. I have not invested in another lense yet - this may make things a bit trickier but hopefully not too bad.

How do you handle carrying around the DSLR and the lenses all day?
Seems like a lot of weight.

For example, I have a Canon 50D. With any lens mounted on it, it can seem heavy after a while. Carrying it around all day plus an extra lens would seem going beyond what might be needed for WDW pictures.
I keep trying to come up with one ideal lens that would not be too heavy.
Even considered just two small primes that would be easy to carry, like a 85mm/1.8 for longer shots and and a simple wide angle for shots in small areas. Use the built in flash.

All in all, I just don't see carrying a heavy bunch of equipment around all day in the parks if one is going on rides as well as taking photos. There's also the chance of banging the camera or lenses when putting items under the seats, etc.
Seems like a good P&S might be the best compromise for WDW.

Maybe one needs to go into the parks just for taking photos at some point. Then do the normal rides, etc. without the DSLR.

If you are using a Cannon SLR do not let them scan your film!!!!!! The xray machines will ruin it. Plus it's a lot fun to tick-off the TSA agents with a big bag of film that they have to do a hand check. I love the looks on their faces.

Carrying a camara and lenses around the parks is a breeze with the right bag. I have backpack style and a slingpack. Both will hold a DLSR, two lenses, extra flash and even a point-n-shoot, plus other accessories and I can even attach a tripod. now I don't always pack everthing, but I do want to be prepared.
