Camera Question

I have always used either a regular 35mm camera or disposable cameras. I usually video more than I take pictures, but still end up with a ton of pictures. I am a camera idiot!:veryconfu Please advise me which cameras I should look at. I'd like something with a good zoom, that will take great night shots as well as day shots. I'm willing to pay a couple hundred for it, but not more than that. The pictures you guys post on here are wonderful and I know you can tell me what to look for. Thanks for any input!!!

My experience is that you cannot get everything in a Point and Shoot camera, even so with entry level DSLRs. You should prioritize your needs to find a camera. Fuji had one of the better P&S for low light shooting. Best zoom is on a Panny Lumix TZ series (10x).

If you can prioritize your needs, look at DPreview.com or other sites for best recommendations.

For that price point you won't be able to get a DSLR. I'd recommend a sony cybershot series. You should be able to get a 7.1 or 8.1 megapixel for that price. I've had very good experience with both sony's I've owned. My zoom is a little imited at 4x, but it takes great pictures. No camera will give you great night shots unless you have a very steady hand, or use a tripod.

I like my Cannon Powershot 1100IS. It's only a 3x zoom but it takes pretty good night shots even without a tripod for a point-and-shoot. It's tiny and has a big, beautiful LCD screen and records good video as well. My 4gig SD card is something like 1200 photos at highest setting and 82 minutes of video on normal setting. Right now, the camera goes for about $165.

No one camera is perfect but if you figure out what's the most important to you, it helps in determining which camera is right for you. Mine is small enough to go everywhere with me at all times - I like that. It also takes very nice shots - I like that too.

I'll second the recommendation for Canon. I did quite a bit of research before I bought mine and I am very happy with it. One feature to look for is a wider-angle lens. Most P&S are 35mm at the widest but some are 28mm which allows for some great shots at Disney. Everyone always worries about zoom, but I find the 28mm to be incredibly useful. Zoom around 4x is usually fine.

Thanks for your input. Like I said, I'm a camera idiot. But you've all given me enough info to do some good research. Having names and styles helps me a lot!! I knew I could count on you!!!:sohappy:

I love my casio exilim, compact design plus they aren't overly priced, and offer great picture quality. Been using it for about 2 years now.

I just got an Olympus Stylus 1010 with a 7x zoom and 10.1 MP and optical and digital image stabilization. It's got a 2.7" screen and fits in my palm, very low profile.

I have to add that I agonized between this, the Panasonic Lumix TZ5, and a Canon. Overall, I think I made the best choice. Picked it up on Buydig.

Happy shopping! Hope it does not take you four months like it took me! :brick::ROFLOL:

I would reccomend no KODAK digital! I had one last Christmas on our family trip to the world and when I got home and ordered my pics, they were all blurry! I went out and bought a canon elph 1100 Series. GREAT camera! So good I even got my parents to buy one for themselves! You would love this camera if your looking just to take pictures. I am so not camera smart but my pics look ok with this camera!

We just got a Kodak 10mp camera. Works great. Took a ton of pictures from my trip a few weeks ago. Maybe the Kodak developers had an issue.
