Camera equipment in the parks

We'll be at WDW for a week in mid-August. I'm a fairly keen (and very amateur) photographer so I'll want to take lots of pictures, but I was wondering how to manage the time and equipment.

Do you dedicate separate trips to a park for either photography or rides? If I go with everything, I'll have a G3 with a 52mm lens adapter, teleconverter, tripod, filters etc. I can't see me taking all that on the rides, but at the same time we don't really have time to make separate trips just to take some photos.

So what do you do?

I would bring the equipment only when you plan on taking perfect shots. But in general, you're camera can be take great pictures without filters, etc. You don't always need to have everything with you to have perfect shots. Just take plenty of photos (if it's digital) and pick out the best ones when you get home...just make sure you got enough memory! I managed to max out 2 of my 256 cards on my last trip (solo trip).

I usually take my school backback and put all of my equipment in there. My tripod and all of my lenses and filters and batteries easily fit in there, and it's easy to carry (since it's on the back)

Yeah, I took over 3000 pictures last trip down. Of course, I had the laptop with me so I could dump all the pics off of the Memory cards at the end of the day. I do what Digital Disney does. I take my back pack and shove all of my important stuff inside, and carry it on my back. It's so easy to carry, I sometimes forget it's even there.

I'm not sure I'd drag around all of the filters and such, unless you're truly going to dedicate a day to taking seriously high quality photos. If you're with a family, or even friends, they probably won't want to wait around while you set up a tripod, change lenses, and put on the correct filter. But that stuff sure is fun, isn't it?:)

Hey, Rick.

If you go on Ebay, there are some really nice $2000 + cameras that you can easily get for the price of that Sony. I love that Sony, too. I've had my eye on it for quite some time.

But then I did some searching for more professional models. I can't remember the exact model number I found, but it's an Olympus something 40. It rocks. If you do a search on Ebay, several will show up. Saving over 1000 bucks on a bad a$$ camera is always a very good thing.:D

Thanks, Zac! I'll look into it. I'm always a little leery buying something on Ebay if it's used, but perhaps something liquidation. Alas - at this point, it's just "thinking about it" but I'm hoping I'll be able to swing it for Christmas. I'll maybe take a teaching gig or two to get the money <G>

Thanks again - and let me know if you get something too!

Speaking from experience, i usually prefer to go light and just carry what i think i will need. Like during the day, one lens and a memory card and the camera with my ittybitty bag.

Nights..... depends. If i'm doign fireworks, Big good tripod. Else a fast lens and the ittybitty tripod.

Only ONCE have i lugged all my crap around a park. 3 hours, 4 advil, 4 botttles of water and a serious back stain later, i went and hid it in the car and came back with one camera and a few rolls of film.

When it comes to managing time, i dont make people wait; i catch up. If i miss a shot because were doing something, i miss it. Such is life.... I'm there having fun; i'm not shooting publication stuff for WDW. (Of course, i'd love to)

Now shooting on rides, fast fast lens and like 1/30 sec and fast film. I hate it when other people use a flash on a ride, so i dont. For sheer amusement value..... try shooting pics on Buzz lightyear and fireing the gun with the other hand..... Good setting there would be like 1/10 of a second as the highest iso and fastest lens you got....

Feel free to IM if you need advice or if you run into any problems. I think ive had everythign that can go wrong with a camera happen to me....

Try 1600 in 4 days. Seriously, i would advise taking some time off by yourself to do some shooting, especially at night. And an Eride night is great to do that, cuz the park is virtually empty.

Thanks for the replies.

This isn't my first trip to WDW, but it's the first with this new camera. I've taken a lot of pics in the park before with my Nikon CP950, and now that I have all the basic ones done I want to try some more interesting shots with the G3.

Using the e-ride night is a great idea, there are two while we're there.

Just a couple of weeks to go :D Hopefully I'll have some nice shots to post when we get back.

Thanks guys, glad you liked them.

I've got a LOT more, some are even not awful :) I've got more galleries to put up this weekend, I might put some more Disney shots up then.

Incidentally if you looked at the pictures before midnight last night then I think you're just being kind :) I found that the gallery program I used had resized some of the vertically-oriented pictures and just destroyed them. The Castle in white and the Liberty Belle ones looked like I'd taken them with a 1966 Box Brownie. They're fixed now.

If you are carying the stuff in a backpack or whatever, put a garbage bag in there. That way on the wet rides you can put in the bag. I have a tiny Digital Camera and I keep it in a small ziplock while doing wet stuff.

Eh... i walked through the gate with a huge back and a tripod on a sholder strap at both MK and epcot. Had no problems whatsoever.

On my last trip I maxed out 2 256 MB memory cards and 1 512MB card. I used my new Nikon Digital. It took amazing photos, and I combined rides and photos. Although people in our group hated waiting for me to get my perfect shot. THe best part: the photo was almost as small as my Nextel, so it wasnt like having to carry a huge camera to get good shots.

Here is a sample of one of the shots i took:
