Calling our rumor experts...new land?

In an article in Business Week regarding this week's celebration and announcements, Al Weiss is quoted as saying they are going to add new lands. Does anyone know what those may be?

"You're going to see us have traditional growth ... adding new shows, new attractions and new lands into our parks," said Al Weiss, president of Walt Disney Co.'s Disney World unit, said on Friday. "But we're going to look at technology as a way to continue to grow our business."

I doubt it was anything super significant, but to underscore the fact that they are not building new PARKS.

Everest at Animal Kingdom can almost be called a new LAND, since the area it occupies is so big.

Isn't it obvious where?

While everyone is dismayed by the final closing of 20K and the replacement of it with a Pooh meet and greet area it is obvious that this is way too much area for just that.

Last September when I did Dine with an Imagineer I pressed about closing family friendly attractions and throwing up thrill rides. "What is to be done about the 20K area - a meet and greet?", I asked. The Imagineer I dined with said he had a family too and they were very aware of meeting the needs of the young families. The telling comment was, "You know, there IS room enough there [old 20K area] for a whole LAND."

So, think about what a LAND entails. If it is to be "Hundred Acre Wood" then fine. How about the Pooh experts out there? What attractions do you need to fill a HAW land?

He is talking for possibilities in the long term. If you noticed, that article could cover a very long period of time. He was talking about how there will not be new park development, but they will expand upon what they already have.

Toon Studios, although there is concept art floating about, i dont think it has been confirmed yet..still just a rumour..and a big one too, the article i read ( I cant remember the site im sorry) was signalling that the development of toon Studios at Disney Studios Paris would eventually complement the addition on Toon Town over at the main park, but again...just a rumour i think. I think i may have got the link from screamscape...again another sign to take all this with a pinch of salt!

I am sorry to say this, but none of us have any idea what al weiss meant by this quote. As many of us like to think we know everything....all we can do is wait and see. Maybe he is being literal, maybe not...only time will tell.......

Lands are merely a term Disney uses to define large themed areas. It came about when Disneyland was developed with all of its "--land" areas. The same idea copied over the MK, and when Epcot came around they became Pavillions because they were mostly housed within one massive building or structure (even most of the World Showcase pavillions are actually single large continuous buildings - though they often don't look like it thanks to rock work etc..) but with MGM, AK, and even DCA the more generic "land" term came back.

Now, I agree, this statement was not meant to be taken as "we're building a new land" but rather that developement of what exists is the current priority. Does this exclude a new land coming? Certainly not. The Pooh area could easily be a land depending on how you define it and what is included (if it has a kiddie play area, meet and greet, shop, and food (even a cart) then its a land - not the best land, but a land!)

Also, Epcot's 25th holds a lot of promise for development. Along those lines, if the Wonders of Life or Universe of Energy undergo major rennovations (entirely plausible), though currently named "pavillions" they could easily be seen as new "lands" too.

That was rather rude.

Whilst some subjects may be a bit passe to experienced (or jaded?) members, there are still some people who wish to discuss well known subjects, who may be new to the boards or new to Disney.

Yes, people can do searches for old topics, but where's the fun in that? Anyone should be able to start a new conversation and express their opinions whenever they want, rather than just read other peoples comments from old posts. Since when was there a rule saying "you can't talk about a certain subject because we already talked about it, but sorry you weren't there at the time"? :zipit:

If anyone wants to post an 'old' topic, then they should be free to do so. If you don't want to discuss the topic, then don't criticise or post abrupt dismissive remarks- just ignore it and reply to a post that interests you. WDWMagic is for all- not for just the 'elite' who think that they know all there is to know, and therefore the subject is closed.

OK. I'm done now. I'm a long time reader (although I don't post very often), but I've seen this kinda thing on the increase...

A new land isn't always a good thing either. Look at dinoland for example. :o
I think you're talking specifically about Dino-Rama. It isn't considered a "land" more like a mini-land, like "a bug's land" at DCA. Dinoland pre-Dino-Rama (and when Dinosaur was Countdown to Extinction) was a great little area for AK, but "Chester and Hester" had build Dino-Rama didn't they. On a side note, whatever happened to the rumoured "Excavator" wooden roller coaster?

Not trying to be rude here, so please don't take it that way. By the same token, if someone did a search and found the old topic, they could revive it with their fresh ideas, rather than taking up extra bandwidth several times over with multiple threads saying the exact same thing(a great example is the almost endless stream of "I heard a rumor of a Harry Potter attraction" which always end up degenerating into less than pleasant conversations). Why have 10 different threads covering 1 topic, when the 1 thread could continue to be posted in until the admins determine it has too many posts and needs to be closed, thus leading to the creation of a second thread if people want to continue the discussion? Just my two cents.

I haven't heard of 'The Excavator' but my word does that sound good, and one thing we haven't got, would be a great addition. Don't quite know where it would go mind. Ahh, I'm dreaming again, lol.

hey disneysailor, i understand where your coming from, i dont think he intended any rudeness maybe MKT had a bad day or something. I never get tired of the rumor threads, i know for every rumer theres countless threads that bring it up but who cares? If all people had to do was search for old threads they would probably never introduce themselves or participate in new discussions.

I agree, I'm sure there was no rudeness intended. However, such comments can appear rude and may discourage members from posting.

In any case, it's no big deal. The main thing is that WDWMagic is still a great site and I do enjoy reading the comments from WDWMagic members.

OK- now back on topic!... :animwink:
