I just wanted to know if there are any actual Imagineers in this forum. If there are I would like to talk with you about the different jobs/positions that are a part of Imagineering. If you would like to talk, please respond to this thread by public or private message.

This board does have Imagineers on it...but...most of them wont come into "public" and say it to save them a hassle of PMs and Emails...perhaps you should ask your questions on here (or more specifically the job forum) and some of us may be able to answer ;)

I am a Film & Video student and I wanted to know about the specific jobs or positions that are associated with Show Production. If I were to try and seek employment what type of jobs would be available to someone like me with a background in film and also theater.

Well what kind of fields are you most skilled in with video? Because there are a few jobs related to film/video such as with lighting or special effects if you have a lot of experience there are video specialist jobs, there is set designing, many things. So basically it depends on what you are most skilled and have the most experience at in Film/Video.

One thing...right out of college Imagineering shouldnt be your main goal. Get a few years of experience under your belt first and then find out what you REALLY want to do. Chances are, Imagineering has a job similar to whatever your passion is ;)

I 've kinda wondered about this but have never asked anyone until now. As far as employment goes, when you are an Imagineer are you hired on project to project or are you a full-time member of the team? I would suspect that some of the longtime members such as Tony Baxter, Barry Braverman, Joe Rohde, Eric Jacobson, Tom Fitzgerald, and Marty Sklar would still be considered full-time Imagineers. I also know that there is the possibility and no guarantee of job security, especially if you haven't been with the company long. Of course, this could also be because of all of the downsizing over the years.

Add to that the fact that Disney has started contracting people on a per project basis..and yeah...job security is decreasing.

And because job security is decreasing it makes it very important that you're one of the best at what you do if you want to stay around in the company. And just like NowInc stated with them contracting people on a per project basis this is very true. Such as with Mission Space, it required to hire "temporary" (if you will) Imagineers from NASA for many of the projects elements but they are only needed for this project.

Would getting an internship be a good starting point to gain insight as to what job or position best matches my skills and experiences. I'm interested in doing set design, dressing, lighting, and special effects. Also, I would like to work on any film productions (pre-show, que area, main feature) that are associated with the ride or attraction. If I did gain an internship I would still continue to work hard and prove myself as if I was a full-time employee. Then I would continue to re-apply for other job opportunities after my internship is up :D

Wow I'm not the only one with this desire (although mine is in Show Writing). For internships look at www.disneycollege.com although there are none for anything except Engineering until 2003 (I've harassed the poor college recruiting person too much but that is what I found out). In fact all the internships in California are on hold till 2003 (as far as I can find out and I've made the phone calls, begged and cried for phone numbers, etc.). Dan is right in saying. Get experience, make SURE that is what you want to do and that you are willing to work hard for it. And get experience in the company. Know your stuff. I did the WDW college program and am pursuing a job out here in California. I know that if I want to get where I need to be I am going to have to do so by proving that I'm compitent, have talent and maintaining a good record with the company. Hm.. and you do know that most of the internships are in California right? lol

Remember that the interships fill up FAST...the only ones available now are for 2003..and by the time THAT time comes around..there will be a backlog until 2005 at least...

Internships are jobs available to college students for about 3 months at a time..they pay less..but give the student a good insight as to what goes on inside the company...

Imagineering has different internships available at different times..your best bet is to keep checking their site for the latest info.

Dan's right... most "real" Imagineers won't come right out and say it, but they do seem to enjoy dropping subtle little hints...

BTW-
Dave, what dept. are you in?

Well.... apperently...

While my mother was at a funeral her friend mentioned that her son had turned down a job from WDI.

He took one at Microsoft instead.

:( Perhaps you don't have the right connections or maybe you didn't go to the right school. I go to Fullsail and everyone that has graduated has gone on to work on some of the most popular movies over the past couple of decades. There are even grads who have worked at George Lucas's Indusrial Light and Magic & Skywalker Sound. To this day, there are grads who have made a career for themselves in all aspects of the film business. Who knows, maybe Florida will become the Hollywood East it was suppose to be in a few years. So you see, the film business can be a good place to have a career. Maybe your parents have connections with a few people in high places that you may not know about. If you want to be in the film business, YOU CAN, just don't give up so easy. :animwink:
