Cake Questions...

This is a big part of why I got into making cakes and why I like getting a fancy cake at Disney...it's very special. That's not to say that a cake from Publix can't be special...it's just a different. It's hard to convey it in words. Most of my friends do supermarket cakes for their kids' bdays and those cakes are great. They know we don't do that, but that it's not done to top anyone else- just done b/c the specialty cake is something I really enjoy doing. And when you're used to having big crazy cakes at home- it's kind of magical to have it when celebrating at Disney as well.
Exactly. For me it is something I can do ESPECIALLY for my daughter. I go all out for her birthday b/c she is our only child. People think I am NUTS how much work and time and money I put into them. I almost feel like I am copping out if I buy a store bought cake. I don't feel that my friends with kids who do buy store bought cakes are bad for doing so, but for some strange reason I feel like I am if I do it. Crazy I know!

What about some beautiful cupcakes? They have amazing ones there and won't break the bank.

You can also call the restaurant you will be eating at on the night of each bday. For $25 they will have a cake to your table. It is small but enough for the 5 of you. A piece of cake would run about $4 per slice anyway if you opted for dessert.

Are you staying in a villa? If so, you can order cake mixes and the supplies and make one yourself.

Good luck!!
We had a cake at CRT that was the traditional podium cake and it was frozen solid, so won't be going that route again. We plan on doing the cake on the Pirates and Pals if they let us (was told by CM that they won't) or in our room at the Contemporary. I want to decorate the room and have given a lot of thought in whether I should splurge on the cake, do an in room celebration via Disney Florist, or do it all myself (i.e. decorate room, buy a cake from Publix and pick it up and bring it to the resort). So just weighing all my options and trying to make it a super memorable birthday for all 3 of my family.

Mine has actually become a matter of need. Back in 2011, DD6 was diagnosed with peanut and tree nut allergies. Due to the high cross contamination risks at most bakeries, we decided it was safest to just always make her cakes...so that's sort of fueled the hobby. My friends have gotten used to it...they just joke that I'm "that mom." :D

My friends always crack on me too. They always say I make them look bad. One Easter I made flower cookie bouquets for one of my friends three daughters. One of her kids was like "Gee Mom, why don't you do things like this?". I felt horrible! I jumped in and said "Because your Mom works fulltime and takes care of all 3 of you! I only have one to take care of and do not have an outside job other than being a Mommy." My friend just looked at me and you could tell she felt horrible.

You are really talented. You ever see cake wars? You should go on it! Do you do side work already?

I think that's where some of my crazy comes in...I work full time in the financial industry...have an hour+ 30 mile commute each way...I am a mom of 2...but I still try to be "that mom." Still- regardless of one's situation- it's still nice to be able to do these special things. I'm one of those people that needs a creative outlet or I go mad...so cakes are where I put that focus. The flower cookie bouquet sounds great!

Have you tried the dessert party in the MK during Wishes? Maybe they would create some sort of cake at a cheap rate since you will be paying for the party, anyway.
We are doing Pirates and Pals instead of that. My mom really wanted to do that the night of my daughter's birthday (she spoils my DD worse than me!) and we went back and forth between the dessert Party and the cruise. But a good idea non the less!

In the 4 years I have been a stay at home mom, I have started hand painting bow holders, making cakes and I have taught myself how to sew! So I am with you on the needing a creative outlet. I was in Marketing before which curbed a lot of that need, but now I am always coming up with some of craft or new thing I want to try!

Thank you :) I'm still shocked that the Cinderella cake I posted was made 3.5 yrs ago. My full time employer has authorized me to operate a side cake business...I just rarely have enough time to do much in the way of cake work. So, right now the only cake I have planned is DH's bday cake...thinking about it being a T-Bone Steak w/a side of mashed potatoes and some green beans. :D

I at least find that cake knowledge helps when ordering cakes at Disney. I just wish caking were a less fattening hobby! Sadly, working with clients on lost securities and legal matters doesn't really stifle any creative needs or desires to sample fondants and cake flavors. Oh well.

We've got a little over a month until his cake, so it may be a little while...but you can always check my cake gallery to see if I've added new cakes.

I don't get to "cake" all the time due to my job, but I always add my cakes to the gallery...and at least some of them are Disney themed. Naturally, some cakes are better than others (ok, some are wrecks ) as I am an amateur, but it's how ya learn. ;)

While I know OP's schedule is pretty full, I think you can add on special things for Dessert Party. Not sure about pricing, but I could have sworn seeing that there are some add on options.

Awwww, thanks! :) And nice reference to the Ron Ben Israel show. ;) He scares the daylights out of me yet I am in total awe of him...serving in the Israeli army, professional dancer, and then going on to make some of the most mind blowing cakes I've ever seen. Experimentation is definitely key...and disasters are inevitable (hence the Corvette Toy Story cake...I guess at least the Alien and Mr. Potato Head were good). My coworkers have come to enjoy the benefits of my flavor experimentation...and it's really funny what some people like. Last year I went really far out on a limb and made avocado pound cake with bacon brie buttercream. I hated it, but there was one girl who wants me to make it again...on the flip side, she hated my grapefruit mousse filling. I used to think I didn't have the patience for it, but all it took was one recipe that was fairly easy and fairly easily modified that everything changed.

I love Halloween wars...just involves so many artistic elements. It's even inspired me to try more intricate pumpkin carvings...and after the first one, I was reminded that I live in SE TX and that my pumpkin would be a rotting mess in less than a day. For what it's worth...this is what I carved...

It's no masterpiece and you can kind of see the surgery I needed to do on one of my bats after it fell (oops), but it's not awful for a first (and only) attempt.

It's funny b/c the people who really liked the grapefruit filling said it reminded them of Orange Julius - odd, but at least they enjoyed it.

Speaking of orange...DH bought me some special vodka and a big bottle of OJ...time to celebrate Saturday night :D

Go enjoy! I am drinking vodka and ice tea myself with the kids fast asleep!!

Hell of a first attempt! Need to learn how to download pictures. I have not caught up to technology and apologize. He have a bit of land and grow our own pumpkins. It is fun for me and the kids bc we can make as many mistakes as we want. My DH is like you, is a perfectionist and sees flaws when they are not there!!

Happy Saturday!!!
