Cake Questions...

Okay...most of you know that when we are going in September we are celebrating 3 birthdays that week. What can I say, our Septembers are super busy. Anywho, thanks to HouCuseChickie I think I have a plan of action down for my DD's birthday cake. I want to surprise my Mom with one as well as my husband. Without breaking the bank. My mom loves all things Disney, but she has always loved Woody from Toy Story. My husband doesn't really have a fave character...but when we first were dating I always called him Goofy b/c he always made me laugh and he even bought a Goofy cell phone cover b/c of my nickname for him. So.....suggestions?

Th easiest thing to do is to order through the Disney website, but it's def. pricey.:(
If flying, then you don't have much choice.
If driving, then I'd order cakes from a nice supermarket and take them w/ me.:D
I actually looked into the Princess cake at Publix and they want $80 for it! Yeah it is a whole lot more cake, but I don't really need a huge cake as there will only be 5 of us. So just kind of like if I am going to have to spend that much on a themed cake at a basic bakery, I might as well get it the way I want it and not waste 3/4 a cake. :D

I spoke with one local bakery down there, can't remember which one. She said for what I wanted it would cost them at least $100 probably more to create. So, I figure let's just do it at WDW and get something close to what we want. If, I have to spend $150 for it so be it. I spend close to that at home on fondant and cake mixes and supplies for icing and all the other stuff that goes into making one myself.

Well, ya had to figure I'd reply ;) And that it would be long winded! :D

OK...I can only recall 2 Goofy cakes, but I also discussed a Goofy cake at some point with someone.

The first cake is a podium style cake with an edible image of Goofy. I am guessing something like this is probably around $35-55 if you go for a smaller cake size.

This is the other one and it involves the Goofy white chocolate topper. Oddly enough, this is one of the best painting jobs I've seen on these toppers. With the cost of the topper. painting the topper, fancy cake costs, and the fact that this is 2 tiers...this is probably a $300-350 cake.

The Goofy cake I discussed with someone was a fondant cake where they added edible images of Goofy around the sides in images of him in a race car. I think the bakery then sculpted a small gumpast/fondant car in similar style to go on top. Still pricey since the sculpted car added to the cost, but probably more in the $85-100 range w/o it.

Still, none of these are particularly affordable options. I mean, even that topper above w/o being painted is still in that $45-65 range for those white chocolate toppers. I've seen people just get the topper on a plate and have them write some kind of message...but not sure if you want to be dropping that on just a topper. Here's a close up of one from the recent show...and I just don't think I could do just the topper...

They have been doing a lot of neat mini cakes and mini wedding cakes lately though and if you had them top a mini wedding cake with a 2D standup edible image of Goofy...it might run about $35. If they were to do a mini cake...you might be able to do something inspired by the cupcake below, but 1) I don't know if the price would be any better 2) I don't know if even just doing the hat would violate their no sculpting of Disney characters mandate.

As for the Toy Story option...I haven't seen much in the way of good Disney created Toy Story cakes. If it were a higher budget cake- I'd suggest you look to the TSMM queue for inspriration...i.e. edible Lincoln Log pieces, barrel of monkeys, game board, etc.- but that will surely elevate the price and even then- in order to get the characters, you're still looking at 2D images. I know a number of people have resorted to plastic toys to serve as toppers. While I'm a big fan of going with all things edible- it could get you a Toy Story themed cake and save you some $.

They are not currently offering any of their specialty cupcakes that have recent been showcased at their cake show, but considering the various bakeries seem to do some character inspired treats...maybe you could even work something out with those? i.e. if you went into the Big Top Treats and they happened to have a Great Goofini themed treat...maybe you could surprise your DH right there on the spot with it? It would definitely be a far cheaper alternative.

OK- I'll quit rambling :)

No rambling, just helping...
I am thinking on the goofy I could probably go for just the topper or have the 2-d image on a smaller cake. My husband isn't all about sweets and it would be more just about the thought behind it. My mom loves sweets so not sure what I could do there. Almost leaning towards a mini-cake with a castle topper. She had even mentioned getting the white chocolate slipper would be awesome. My dad got her a Mickey with chocolate strawberries two trips ago and she was just completely overwhelmed so I know she will love whatever I do.

I really want one of us to get this bad boy (aka -the SMALL castle);) , but I still just can't stomach the $100-165 for it...

Still, the mini is very cute and won't break the bank...

I maybe way off track here and sorry in advance but what if you bought from a local grocery a decal or a computer image you could put in a folder and put over the cake or on it??? Does that make sense? or figurines to put on top? Do you know what restaurant you will be in? Maybe individual cupcakes, too, especially if there are only five of you. Cookie cake? Check with the garden grocer. They may have ideas.

These pictures are amazing!

I'd been eyeing the "small" castle last summer b/c I wanted to have them make an Ariel cake. They don't offer an Ariel topper...so I thought if I got them to give the small castle the "sand" painting treatment (shown below) it might make for a cool cake with lots of seaweed, coral, shells, and edible images of Ariel, Flounder and Sebastian swimming on the cake. Only problem- with the sand treatment...the price jumps to a whopping $165 for just the topper. Add on another $85-115 for the cake. YIKES!!!

I know people do bring in cakes from places like Publix as well as outside bakeries, so this is an option if you can pick it up or get someone to deliver it.

That would be GORGEOUS! I am like you I want the castle SOOOOO bad. I want it for my daughter's cake but that would put it at $175+ for the cake. I just don't know if I can do that.

Am I silly in wanting it to be more "special" . We can do Publix cakes at home, and I refuse to. I just like to make them for her and for others. Means more in a way to me. And I can't make them when we are there so I want to get something special.

It's tough b/c at some point you step back from and start thinking "but it's just a cake." In fact, this is one of the reasons I just can't see myself doing cakes full time...even if the ingredients cost a ton of $ and there are days of labor involved...at some point most people are going to step back and say "it's just a cake...so why so much $$$?" Still, It's hard not love a big white chocolate version of Cinderella Castle - especially when you can snack on turrets for months! ;):D

Besides...it's not like we're wanting this topper!!!!!!
th

Yeah- that's the BIG ONE!

Exactly! I mean most people will pay for a good cake. I always find it funny that people will pay $10 a slice for a wedding cake but expect a birthday cake with the same detail and work to cost the same as what they would get at a grocery store.

This is a big part of why I got into making cakes and why I like getting a fancy cake at Disney...it's very special. That's not to say that a cake from Publix can't be special...it's just a different. It's hard to convey it in words. Most of my friends do supermarket cakes for their kids' bdays and those cakes are great. They know we don't do that, but that it's not done to top anyone else- just done b/c the specialty cake is something I really enjoy doing. And when you're used to having big crazy cakes at home- it's kind of magical to have it when celebrating at Disney as well.

What about some beautiful cupcakes? They have amazing ones there and won't break the bank.

You can also call the restaurant you will be eating at on the night of each bday. For $25 they will have a cake to your table. It is small but enough for the 5 of you. A piece of cake would run about $4 per slice anyway if you opted for dessert.

Are you staying in a villa? If so, you can order cake mixes and the supplies and make one yourself.

Good luck!!

EXACTLY!!!! I had a coworker ask me about making his daughter a cake along the lines of DD6's 3rd bday cake...

OK- not the best pic, but you get the idea. He wasn't willing to spend more than $45, but was really hoping I could do it for $35. I told him I'd make the gumpaste glass slipper for $35, but the sculpted pillow cake would add considerably to that price. Yeah- he bought a cake at the supermarket.
