I was working there during the Mid 2000’s and never heard of it. I guess maybe it depended on the positions. The only time I ever had to be fingerprinted was for the airport identification I needed for airline check-in at the resorts but that wasn’t Disney it was the airport.
Can’t speak for everything. But they were definitely doing it for attractions and merchandise in parts of 2006 and 2007.

What probably happened is this:

1. BackDoorDisney admitted he's a CM. CM's can get backstage to EPCOT because that's where the Center for Living Well is; aka Disneys private doctor place. https://www.myclw.com

2. BDD Tells the guard he's there for CFLW, and they let you through. He parks in the backstage parking lot but does his exploration instead (hence why all his exploring is at Epcot, WoL, Communicore, Imagination).

Sorry all of this is wrong. CLW is in the Epcot Cast Parking lot, which is not a restricted area nor is it in Epcot at all. Normal CMs going to work in the park must park in this lot and enter on foot via the Cast Services building. Only managers, executives and vendor deliveries are permitted “drive on” access, where you actually bring a vehicle into the backstage area of the park.

It is the same system at all the parks. Normal CMs do not get to park in berm, both for capacity and security issues

I got fingerprinted during hiring, but nothing when I worked there around 2007 inside of the parks and I worked as a contractor (parked wherever I wanted :D ) or when I was a CM at MK, never did biometric scanning, etc. getting in.

Yeah I’m only referring to during hiring. Never anything but an ID check to access backstage when working.

But getting a vehicle backstage was and still is much more restricted.

Yes, I did have a special piece of paper that showed I was doing POS installs, so they would let me park in the backstage area closest to where I needed to be. It was nice.

That, or this really is viral marketing for Guardians. But I doubt it as actual arrests were made.

I think your onto something here.

Disney's PR, sets up a "Back door Disney" account.
Loads with with some choice footage, that they would (since it's Disney.) have aces to.
Puts out a PR release about missing Buzzy, kills the BDD account and has some trusty bloggers spread some info.
Already assuming that they had some other "items" picked out to "Disappear"

Hmm

Wait... it’s Christmas time... this is a Disney attraction... I think I know a character at a competing theme park that could be responsible...

I mean, it isn't as crazy as Cinderella Castle being a secret missile silo

If Disney really cared about the possibility of him being stolen then he would have been protected and in storage years ago

This was all WDW's plan to permanently dash hopes of a CC revival while leaving themselves blameless. Genius!

Update: Apparently BackDoorDisney has deleted his new account now.

Which one? He keeps making new ones.

I highly doubtful whatever is happening is this elaborate. Disney would NEVER release backstage photos and videos the way that Backdoor did. Remember, he's the guy that posted the pics of the dismantled Stitch animatronics, as well as the Imageworks video. I could however see them trying to play games with the fans like those of us here that knew about Buzzy rotting for 12 years. They very well could have had him "stolen" as hype for GotG, as the backstory for that ride will revolve around Peter Quill visiting EPCOT Center as a child, but even then, it would seem odd for Disney to acknowledge the fact that they let an AA rot for over a decade.

Wait- I'm sorry. False alarm. He simply changed his username. He's now known as @WhereTFisBuzzy. Sorry about that. I don't have a Twitter, so I've been checking his page without an account. I had it open in a background tab, and when I went to refresh it a while ago, it said the account wasn't found. A simple Twitter search however, reveals that he's still there.
