Buying Resale Question

I was talking with a fellow DVC Member this past weekend...he was telling me he had some contracts he bought resale. He went on to say that after you have your resale points for 4 yrs Disney allows you to use them towards cruises and Disneyland. I had just said to him oh I didn't think that was the case, I thought once you bought resale you could not use them anywhere besides Disney Resorts. So, my question is does anyone know if this is correct? Thanks in advance for your information.

Originally, resale contracts had no restrictions, and could be used for cruises, Adventures by Disney, etc. But a few years back DVC changed the rules/benefits (whichever it was legally) so that only new contracts still have those benefits. Any contracts already sold on the resale market were grandfathered in as is bought direct. Quoting from The Timeshare Store (sponsor of this forum)

The real estate interest (Membership) that you purchase through The Timeshare Store, Inc.® will not be eligible to use those Vacation Points to make reservations within the Concierge Collection, the Disney Collection or the Adventurer Collection. Those Vacation Points will instead be valid for reservations at Disney Vacation Club resorts, as well as for the RCI® exchanges, Club Cordial and Club Intrawest.

There was no provision put in place for changing points after they were owned for X number of years. If its bought resale, you have the above mentioned restrictions.

It is not correct. All resale purchase agreements filed with DVC after March 20, 2011 are forever prohibited from being used toward destinations in The Disney Collection, The Adventurer Collection and The Concierge Collection. (That is, unless DVC happens to reverse the policy.)

IMHO trading in the points for any of the banned programs is not a very good deal so you aren't missing out on anything. Even trading in through RCI which is still allowed isn't a good deal.
