Buying points Disney then Resale

If you buy your initial points from Disney. (say 100) Then come to find out you want more points can you buy them resale if they are for the same home resort? How does that work? I know you lose perks when you buy resale, but wouldn't you already be getting them from the initial 100.


Also are their closing cost when you purchase more points?

Contracts purchased on resale cannot be used for Concierge Collection, the Disney Collection (which includes non-DVC Disney resorts worldwide and the Disney Cruise Line), or the Adventurer Collection. The loss of this perk is on a per-contract basis and does not affect other contracts owned by the same member. In your example, the owner would still be able to use their original 100 point contract for the listed exchanges but not the points purchased on resale.

Resale transactions have closing costs. Points purchased directly from DVC do not.

If you want to dabble in the theoretical, it's POSSIBLE that DVC will someday limit certain perks to owners with direct purchase points. For instance, they could say that only owners with direct points can take advantage of the Annual Pass discount. In that case, having some direct points may be enough to qualify.

But again that's entirely theoretical. We have no way of knowing if such a policy will ever be created.

Like the prior poster said, DVC will track the nature of every contract owned. If you buy 100 resale points, those points cannot be used for cruises and other prohibited destinations. Similarly, if you buy 100 Beach Club points and 100 Old Key West points, DVC is sophisticated enough to limit you to using the 100 BC points for bookings at 11 months. To use the OKW points at BC, you have to wait until 7 months out.

Also, if you add on to your ownership via resale, it's highly recommended that you buy the same Use Year, have the contracts titled identically AND let your broker know that you want the resale contract attached to your original master contract. If you fail to meet any of these 3 criteria, the resale contract will be set-up as a new Master contract. Combining points from the two then requires you to perform a TRANSFER, which is limited to one transaction per year. IMO, you're setting yourself up for 40-50 years of headaches unless you make sure the contracts are linked together.

This is a good point. I purchsed some additional points from the resell market and to make things easy I only put the resell points in my name. The orginial points where in my wifes and my names, so I had to pay additional funds to have a second filing to add he name so I could combine contracts in one. Leason learned the hard way.
