My husband and I purchased 225 points directly from WDW last year. I have been looking at the resale lists and wonder if someone can help me with this question. Should I purchase additional points for the same month that my current points wwere bought in?? And what are the advantages of buying at the same resort or a different one? We currently own at AKL.

Thanks:wave:

It's certainly easier to use your points at the 7-mo window if they are all under the same master contract. If you add-on direct from DVC, assuming your first contract is "xxx.0", your add-on will be "xxx.1" and will be the same Use Year.

If you purchase another contract with a different UY, your first contract will be "xxx.0" and your second contract will be "yyy.0". You have the option of transferring points from one contract to another, but it's more work, IMO.

Even if you purchase a resales contract with the same UY, it won't by default be added on as "xxx.1" unless you contact DVC and ask them to do so.

The only reasons to buy a different UY are 1) you can't find a contract you like with your UY, or 2) you hate your current UY and want a different one.

And what are the advantages of buying at the same resort or a different one? We currently own at AKL.

The advantage is to get the 11-mo home resort booking advantage at another resort. Keep in mind that if you have more than one home resort, all vacation points being used to make a reservation during the Home Resort Priority Period must be associated with that home resort. That is, you cannot combine points from multiple resorts to book one resort during the Home Resort Priority Period. You may combine all the points you have at all your home resorts and book any DVC resort only at the 7-month window.

Some folks purchase small add-ons at other resorts and then, by banking and/or borrowing, book a vacation there at the 11-month window every 2 or 3 years.

Bingo. Best advantage to keeping same UY and the same resort is the "simplicity" and not having your blood pressure rise when you try to make reservations at the 11-month window.

Scenario...
Johnny Mousefan has two DVC contracts. Contract A has 100 points at Animal Kingdom Villas. Contract B has 100 points at Saratoga Springs. Johnny Mousefan wants to book a 150-point vacation at AKV. Even though he has 200 total points and AKV is one of his home resorts, he can't book that trip during the 11-month "home advantage" because he only has 100 points at that resort. If you add in different use years, it gets even more confusing. :hammer:

All Johnny Mousefan has to do is borrow 50 AKV points from the next UY and he can make his 150-point reservation 11 months in advance. If he owned all 200 at SSR, he could only book AKV at the 7-mo window.

I own at four different resorts, and I don't have any problems managing my points.

OK another question

My wife and I are thinking about DVC. My questions are, we have
enough money to purchase about 150 points, and will probably have
enough to purchase an additional 150 points early 2009. We want the
same home resort. Would you advise that we purchase 150 points now, and
then the remaining next year, or wait to purchase all 300 at same time? We
are looking at resale, not new purchase. Any thoughts/ideas?

I'd buy now. Prices will only go up, especially when the Kingdom Tower Resort becomes available. We paid $87/point when we joined in 2005, and now points are over $105 per, I believe.
