The scariest things I hear about are the carjackings and road rage shootings, which happen when you act like an idiot from Fast and the Furious on I-4 in a state where it is legal to carry loaded weapons in your car.

ha ha...we went to buy a new car a year after moving to FL..the salesman referred to the locking compartment under the seat as "a great place to keep your gun" .....hubby and I just looked at each bug eyed other because this guy was serious and not joking, up in MA they stress the number of cup holders and get overly excited about juice box shaped cup holders.

That's bizarre to me! I have lived in Florida my entire life. Other than in Miami, I've really not known anyone to be afraid like that. I've never owned a gun, but my car is full of juice boxes!

I live in downtown Lakeland and LOVE it! We live in a historic district. We walk to the library, art museum, restaurants, parks, shops. It's about 45 minutes to WDW.

As far as schools:
Polk County is HUGE and the schools are widely varied. Don't look at an over all score or rating. Schools in Lakeland are MUCH different than those in other areas of the county. My daughter attends a Montessori charter school about 5 minutes from our house. There are many charter and magnet options for School Choice. There are also great private schools.

We paid $240,000 2 years ago for our 1917 house that's about 2600 sq ft. We've put about $40,000 into it. But it needed work because it is old and hadn't been well cared for. We sold our previous home for $240,000 - a 1921 1500 sq ft house in nearly perfect shape.

Don't let all of the reports of crime in the Orlando area scare you. Yes, there is crime. You have to be aware. There are areas where I would not go (Pine Hills)! That being said, there are many, many nice areas that have no more crime than any other big city.

I live in Windermere. I never feel unsafe. That doesn't mean that a crime couldn't occur in this area. You just take precautions. Unless I'm working outside, my doors are locked (I did that when I lived in Missouri). I lock my car doors when I'm out running around. But I am not afraid to walk around my neighborhood. I did that tonight. I run around the city by myself on a regular basis. Orlando is like many cities. The crime is very high in certain pockets of the city.
