I was wondering if anyone had any advice as to buy points to ssr directly from Disney or use a reseller?

If you buy through a reseller, the price per point will likely be cheaper, but there may be hidden costs, closing costs, so make sure the reseller breaks down every thing and gives you a complete total.

Initial Purchase from DVC
  • You can get the exact number of points that you want (although you must buy a minimum of 160)
  • Faster than resale (you will be in the system and have your points and be able to make reservations much faster than resale)
  • No worries about the purchase if Disney executes ROFR, since that only applies to resale purchases
  • More expensive cost per point than the resale market
  • You can finance through DVC, and Disney doesn’t report the loan to credit reporting agencies
  • You can pay with a Rewards credit card and get points/cash back
  • The full set of points you buy will be available immediately, versus a resale contract which may be “stripped” of points.
  • If you don’t want the resorts they are currently selling (AKV/SSR), you may have to do some firm talking to a guide to convince them you really want an older resort.
Initial Purchase via Resale
  • You may not get the exact number of points you want
  • You can purchase less than 160 points for your initial buy-in to DVC (Disney won’t let you buy less than 160 points).
  • It will take much longer to get into the DVC system and have your points (resales typically take 6-8 weeks)
  • Disney may exercise ROFR and you may loose the resale and have to start all over (When buying resale, one of the potential pitfalls to try to avoid is making an offer that will cause Disney to exercise it’s Right of First Refusal)
  • Resale is typically less expensive then buying from DVC
  • You can’t finance through DVC, although most resale brokers will recommend a finance company
  • A resale contract may be “stripped” of points where the user has used many of the current year’s points, and may have borrowed some or all of next year’s points. Just be aware of “stripped” contracts on the resale market.
  • Easier to pickup large point packages at any of the older DVC resorts.

thank you

I'm leaning toward buying some from disney and some from a reseller, the trick is finding a person who will have the user year that I will have. Do you guys recommend one reseller over another?

thank you very much for all of the feedback.

Mike, thank you so much for your help. I've read many of your posts and they have really helped us make a decision. I'm going to call in the next few days and lock in at SSR. I think I'll buy the 225 points from Disney to take advantage of the two promotions and then buy another 100-120 points from a reseller. Do you recommend buying the extra 100 points at SSR or at another resort? i noticed you have multiple home resorts, is there an advantage?

Each resort offers something diffferent, in ameneties, points required to stay there, initial purchase cost, contract length, and annual maintenance. Where you buy or add-on really depends on which of these variables are more important to you.

For me, I cared very much where I wanted to stay. So I purchased at my four favorite resorts so that I was assured of having the 11-month home resort priority period in booking my reservations. I never have a problem booking BCV or VWL, for example, whereas people who don't own points at the two smallest DVC resorts at WDW may have trouble booking them at the 7-mo window at certain times of the year. I always get the BW view rooms or Std view rooms at BWV. As an owner of AKV, I have a better chance of booking Concierge rooms and Value rooms at AKV than a non-owner.

For other people, they might be less interested in always getting a particular resort and may be more interested in low point cost for stays (OKW and BWV Std), largest room size (OKW), lowest overall cost (SSR), contract length (AKV, SSR, and now OKW), or some other consideration.

People who can't reliably book at the 7-mo window should buy and add-on at the lowest overall cost resort, which right now happens to be SSR.

can you use all points at one resort?

let's say you have 100 points at BWV and 225 at SSR, can you use all 325 points to book a room at BWV 11 months in advance?

No. You can only use the points you own at a particular resort at the 11-mo window. You can combine your points at all your resorts and book any DVC resort at the 7-mo window.

No, you can't do it that way. At 11 months out, you can only book points from that Home Resort(in your scenario 100); however, you can bank or borrow form adjacent use years to increase your points available to book at 11 months out at that resort.(300 max in your scenario)

Another approach would be to book two ressies, 1 @ each home resort, at the 11, and then try to rebook the less desirable ressie to the more desirable resort at the 7.

Have you tried this approach, and if so were you successful? Thanks again for all of your help.
