Bus Driver Under the Influence?

My brother just called me and informed me of one of his co-workers was in WDW last week. Apparently a driver they had for the Magical Express was under the influence of Crack and the co-worker's husband had to talk the driver into pulling over and ended up taking the keys.

Anyone know anything on this?

I haven't heard about it, but would question the accuracy of it. It is quite possible that a driver was under the influence of something, I would suspect however that it was unlikely to be crack, the effects of which are relatively short-lived.

Having said that, I would be interested to hear any more info, such as the actual nature of the driver's behaviour etc.

And what did he do with the keys once he got them? Drive the bus himself, radio for help, flag someone down? What?

I'll bet that if the driver was on a drug, it was probably a prescription drug, some of which can make you act very peculiar (fentanyl, for example, which some people who are in severe pain get in the form of a lollipop). I would think someone would've noticed prior to getting on the bus if the driver was on crack. I've seen people on crack and it's pretty obvious.

Not to say its not true, but i would bet something like this would have made it into the Orlando Sentinal. With all the taxi drivers unhappy about DME, the'd jump on any chance to smear it if they could. If it is true, then the driver could have had a mental breakdown or abused/accidental prescription drugs. Most users of drugs just wouldn't have shown up for work high/stoned/etc because they forgot.

That's why I suggested it was likely to be something else as you mention. When crack is smoked, the high only lasts about 10 minutes, so this makes it very unlikely. Also, it is unlikely that anybody within that ten minutes would have the control and motivation to carry out their job.

Anyway - there must have been some strange and concerning behaviour to have drawn attention to the driver for whatever reason - that is what we want to know - what was going on?

Need more info!!!

The more stories I hear about DME bus drivers, the more I wish it was operated by Disney Cast Members. :(

Yeah it was a real pain in the rear trying to do it with a 'special case' as they called it... we were staying on my aunts DVC points and had another couple flying in stay with us. Well they wanted her DVC member number and the last of her ssn before they would talk with us... real pain... didn't want to bother my aunt about it since she was letting us use 110 points free! Either way we drove to pick them up and it worked out fine... just annoying

Well its coming to that. At the last i knew it was costing the Resorts a lot of money to Pay Mears to drive DME. The DME buses themselfs are owned by WDW but Mears hires the drivers to drive the buses because Mears operates out of the airport. DOT (Department Of Transportation) requires durg tests every 2 years but disney takes it to the next level. I have my pre employment drug test in May and i was picked for a random drug test 2 weeks after i started and Trust me its at random. Disney randomly picks a bus hub each day and tests a certain amount of drivers each day. They are key on the safey of there guests.

Second most buses dont have keys per-say. I am not going to say how to start a bus because i dont want a lot of disney buses missing. School Buses have "keys" but transport buses dont.

Considering a power outage at Epcot that stranded terrified passengers on Soarin for in excess of 2 minuets made the paper I am pretty sure a DME bus driver on crack would have been worthy of a special edition.

DOT drug test are not required every two years, driver physcial area required every two years and include a drug screen. Disney's program is no more stringent than the law requires because to do so would incite scrutiny by unions or individuals who beleive they are being unfairly targeted. However, employers can choose to test more people than specific required by the percentages set forth in the law in order to insure they meet federal requirements for testing in an audit situation.

DOT requires a pre-employment drug screen following certain standards that can be found in the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Regulations. Then during the course of a year, the same regulations require that an employer test a certain percentage of their commercial drivers for both drugs and alcohol. The test subjects are chosen by a completely random process that can result in the same person being tested multiple times in a year while another person may go for quite some time with no test at all.

Since the test must be random in nature, there is no way Disney can pick a hub, out of which all people selected to be tested would working that day. Also, the because of the way Disney conducts scheduling, there is no way to insure after the selction process that all employess identified will be at the same location.
