Bug spray

I get very few bites in the parks. I always thought it was just safety in numbers. More people than mosquitoes. Appears I was wrong.

Ah yes. What we here in the swamplands of Florida (and elsewhere I suppose) call IPM or Integrated Pest Management.

I've always marveled at WDW's ability to keep mosquitoes at bay. Only time we've ever been bitten on property is at Ft. Wilderness, usually only at the outdoor movie. Long walks back to the cabin at night? Not a single bite. Truly miraculous when you think about it.

Homeowners like us who enjoy sitting outdoors in our backyards here in the Sunshine State are engaged in a constant cat-and-mouse, Wile E. Coyote, ACME level battle against the little buggers. In a suburban setting, a single homeowners' negligence, such as leaving standing water on their property, can potentially threaten the entire neighborhood with a massive mosquito outbreak.

After years of due diligence on my own property, without any success, I finally called mosquito control. The specialist took a quick look around and pointed out my neighbor's rain gutter-- which was slowly dripping water, even though it had not rained for two weeks. Turns out it was installed incorrectly-- and holding more than enough water to create a constant mosquito breeding ground.

A little neighborly cooperation and a steady supply of Mosquito Dunks every three weeks (look it up, they work wonders), in addition to routine inspections for standing water, clearing low underbrush, leaf piles and tall weeds, and my backyard is currently 95-98 percent mosquito free. Success!

So long story short, we regular homeowners here in Florida are in constant awe over how effectively WDW manages to keep mosquitoes at bay over such an incredibly vast area. A herculean task that visitors may not fully be aware of but surely appreciate.

Hi hello.
I was wondering how many of you use bug spray on Disney property? We never have in the past but wondered if it's the norm. I know Disney has very few mosquitoes. It's quite amazing actually but they issued a high risk report for a serious mosquito virus last year in "southwest Orange County" which is basically Disney. If you do use bug spray, is there something safe for young kids?

Thanks!
The only time I have had bugs at WDW was rope dropping the MK one morning and the train station walls were covered with midges? from the lagoon. Did not bite or fly but thousands of them otherwise never need bug spray on property

Along with all the aforementioned methods to control mosquitoes at WDW, I’ve also heard that there are at least two bat colonies on property that take care of the vast majority of the ones that get around those other methods.
We’ve been to WDW many times (especially during the summer) and have never used bug spray or been bitten by a mosquito.

Never used it when at Disney or Universal... now if I'm forced to stay in other hotel in the Kissimmee area then you sometimes need bug spray when the sun goes down... venture further south in Florida and you better have bug spray.

No
Pest Control missed this lil guy. He wanted a dip in the pool.

Saw one of these guys on a path walking back to my room at CSR a couple of years ago. As a Brit not used to these things, I quickly went a very long way around to get back instead 😅
