Flavoring a beer with materials other than hops, barley, and wheat, are strictly novelty, boutique beers in my minds.
OK..That is what I thought..and not what I think Monty thinks is a real beer either..

I am not a beer drinker..though I do like the flavored beers..Abita Strawberry and Abita Pecan..and they have a new Abita Satsuma one they just came out with..that I enjoy...

The only beer's I really like that may be real beer's..maybe not.. is Blue Moon..and Negre Modello..I am not sure of the name..:o..those are the only ones I enjoyed that were not flavored..other then that I like Corona with Lime or the Abita flavored ones..:D..

Dana, It is usually safe to say 'real' beer has an alcohol content at or above 5% and doesn't have fruity flavouring added. :D

From that starting point, beer should have head that lasts a while and taste that is pleasant.

What is real beer to you?

Nothing with "Light" or "Lite" in the name or made by Bud, Coors, Miller, etc.

I like all Abita's (even the flavored ones because they have their place). My favorites though are the traditional beers with higher alcohol contents like Amber, Andygator, Turbodog (Abita's version of Guiness), Restoration, etc.

The Satsuma one was slightly disappointing (as I was really looking forward to it). It should taste like Blue Moon (same thing basically) but they put too much spice and not enough citrus.

For those wondering, Abita is the local microbrewery in southeast Louisiana.

Guiness is delicious.

Warsteiner Dunkel - a dark beer (lager) from Germany is my favorite beer. When I was in college I would get a make-your-own-six-pack nearly once a week from Central Market. You get to try a lot of different things from all over the world. I wonder if the German pavilion would have Warsteiner.

What are some of your favorite beers from around Disney World?

If you are going to throw wheat in there then you have to include a whole bunch of other cerials - including the dreaded rice. Yes, rice can have a place in beer - "real" beer. I have used rice syrup myself at times. Admittedly not to the extents that Budweiser does, but it does have its uses.

There are also a lot of other "things" that you can add to beer, for flavoring or other reasons that are not included in your list. Minerals to adjust the water profile, irish moss or isinglass to clarify (I am a traditional kind of guy, no Polyclar here), various herbs and spices (I would contend that Belgin wheat beers are "real" beer, and they are loaded with coriander - and orange). I have even been known, in a fit of unbridled creativity (or maybe insanity) to chuck a half dozen lemons and limes in the secondary fermenter just to "see what would happen" - It was interesting to say the least.

I look at beer much the same way as I look at wine, and food.

You can buy Bud Lite, Coors Lite, or other such beers or you can buy one of the thousands of well crafted beers out there.

You can also buy a box of Franzia, or you can buy a bottle of good wine (and not break the bank either, $10 a bottle)

You can get a "steak" cooked well done, covered in blue cheese, salt, and butter, and a side of freezer fries covered in catsup and declare how good it is because it is tender and the portion size is huge, or you could get tradition steak frite, with a hangar steak that while not as "melt in your mouth" has taste, and real, hand cut, thin frites - with the steak making its own sauce for the fries.

I don't begrudge people for what they want to eat and drink. If its what they like, then its what they like. But there are a lot of thing out there that are better if people would just move a bit outside their comfort zone and try new foods and drinks and actualy taste them.

Now I have to go drink my Zima and eat my Baloney sandwith with Miracle Whip on Wonder bread.

Ever try Leinenkugel's? Its from Wisconsin. Their Classic Amber is great. They also do seasonal brews like 1888 Bock. Also like Sam Adams.
