Most of you are thinking I am nuts for sure...and I would too...LOL
BUT...my husband is military and about to go overseas for a year. He has been in a school for the past few months. We promised our 4 year old we would go to Disney before his daddy left. So unfortunately for us...August with a 2 month old is the only option.

I am looking for any advice or tips from anyone who has gone with a young baby in the summer months. I am so worried about the heat and sun etc. I have a sunhat, a sling, a stroller, a pack and play. I am worried about him getting overheated in the swing, etc etc, what to do with our stroller, etc etc.

LUCKILY my mother in law has agreed to come along. She said she can help take the baby back to the room at times. Should I even attempt bringing him out during the day? or should I just bring him early morning and evening?

Any advice at all would be appreciated.

Also, does anyone know where I can get a clip on fan that is battery charged for the stroller? THANK YOU in advance!

Make sure to keep him/her hydrated. Also use the baby care centers in each park. They have a/c and will be a great place for a break. I would put a blanket over the hood of my stroller to keep the sun off my kids. It would keep it a little cooler in there too. I never used the sling. It was too hot. Try One Step Ahead for a fan. I had one but never used it. I would try to do as many indoor shows as possible. Also the gift shops are a great place to cool off.

Good luck and have a great time.

Last time i was in disney i seen down town disney had fans that hook to your stroller you could try that, also the baby centers in the parks are really great areas for babies. They have rocking chairs that you or your mother in law can sit in and take a break with your baby. Just dress the baby lightly too. I never get why people put all the clothes and blankets on babies....but to block out the sun, a light weight blanket is a good idea to drape over the stroller (make sure it's big enough).

PS...I don't think you're crazy for taking your baby, even if your hubby wasn't in the military, lots of people with older children take babies to the theme parks....even in August. (it's no one elses business anyways, you do what's best for your family and don't feel like you have to explain anything if you don't want to) I took a one month old to the parks for a short weekend trip and let people give me the looks and make comments...I figured I'd never see them again anyways

ZNC totally off topic but since you are military make sure you get the discount military tickets (from your base ITT without tax it's 99 for the basic for 5 days 124 with park hopper or water added, or 149 with water and park hopper added. Also ask for the military discount at the disney hotel if you already didn't. If you are staying at the disney resorts the military is also allowed to get the dining plan too without getting a whole package since you have discount tickets! I just did a trip last week with a friend and a 6 year old and I saved us over $1000 in military discounts!!!!

I threw a beach towel over our stroller canopy and then clipped a fan on the inside to keep it from getting too hot in there. You can buy clip on fans at Disney (I know they sold them at the resorts). Most times I just had her dressed in little diaper shirts and then I would just lay a little receiving blanket over her.

I think this is a perfect age to take a baby (they're so "portable" at that age and they're quite content to be in their strollers and slings - some of the older babies are not!:animwink:)

You definitely are not nuts.

If your MIL is coming along and she is not much of a park person, I would leave the baby behind during the hottest time of the day. You can then spend 1 on 1 time with your hubby and older child. You will be able to go on rides that you normally would be able to with the baby with you this way as well. I wouldn't bother with the sling, you and the baby will both end up being hot and uncomfortable.

I don't think you're nuts either! Just remember to go at your baby's pace. The baby care centers are awesome! Great place to cool off and take a break. Your 4 yr old will even like the Disney movies they have playing. Your baby will be able to go on a lot of the rides with you, so he/she will get a break from the sun just being on the rides. Like others have said, just dress him really cool and try to keep in the shade when possible, gift shops, rides or baby care centers. As long as your 4 yr old can go at night, keep the baby with you since it'll be cooler. IF it gets too hot during the day, you could always take baby back to the resort to cool off. If your baby is sleeping, you can also take the stroller into any of the restaurants as well. The sling would be good to use on the rides, in the gift shops or restaurants, but I wouldn't use it during the day. Both you and baby would get pretty warm. Since you won't be able to put sunscreen on baby, just keep baby out of the sun as much as you possibly can.

My best advice I would give to you would to just relax and have fun! Go with the flow, keep hydrated, keep cool and out of the sun and you and your family will have a great trip!

Congrats on taking your baby to WDW! It's a great idea, and the folks who say their too young don't know what the heck they're talking about. We took our son when he was 8 weeks (he's been about 10 times more now and isn't quite 4 years old) and our daughter when she was 10 weeks (almost 17 months and has been 3 times) during the summer. As others have said, take it slow, make sure you and the baby stay hydrated, and take advantage of the air conditioned baby centers. My wife used a Bjorn for a while, but it is hot. If you're staying on property, go back to the room mid-day and take a rest/nap. You're starting a wonderful tradition that your children will enjoy for the rest of their lives.

That's a nice post... refreshing to read! Isn't it wonderful taking our children to WDW!?! People think I'm nuts b/c my kids have been three times and they're only 6 and 3! But you're even crazier than me!:animwink:

I agree with everyone else who said NO, you are not nuts for taking an 8 week old. Enjoy the family time you have before he leaves. May God watch over and protect him and all our other soldiers serving!

I also agree with not taking the sling. It will only make the two of you most uncomfortable, not to mention wet from sweating so much. If you MIL is not against going to between the parks/resorts alone with a baby, I would most definitely go early in am, go back to hotel around lunch or a little before....that way you can at least eat lunch with MIL and then meet back up in time for dinner somewhere once the sun has gone down.

Hey, maybe she'll even offer to watch the 4 y/o to let you and hubby have some one on one time for a romantic dinner alone before he ships out! No matter what you do, HAVE A BALL AND "REMEMBER THE MAGIC"! (sorry for the pun--just felt appropriate!) :)
