Brilliant/keen observations Trip Report

So, this is more like a series of keen(IMO) observations, then a typical trip report. For one thing, I do not take many pictures while on vacation. I prefer to view things in ultra HD right in front of my face, then through a tiny little screen. So there will be no pictures. So, for the 1 or 2 of you still reading, here is both the good and the bad.

Staying at WLV from April 5th to April 11th.

Day 1...

Arrived at WLV at around 1:30a. Got stuck in room 1559. Which backed up to a utility room. Not sure what machinery was in there, but whatever it was, it was incredibly loud. Asked to be moved, and around 2a, we were able to switch rooms. I think the WLV might need an updating, the rooms are, a bit, rough around the edges. But still quite nice.

Day 2...
Slept in a bit, being up till 2:30 will do that to you. Then had some trouble with our KTTW cards, they could not change the RFID in the cards to open up our new room. So, they had to re-book our reservation, then issue us new cards. This took around 45 minutes. Which was not an ideal start to the day. Technology, making things easier, whilst also making things more difficult.

After that was all sorted out, we decided to just spend the day at Epcot. We were able to use the new entry points with our RFID KTTW cards, and for most people, this was a simpler, faster way to enter the parks. For some people, it was basically the equivalent of asking them to pilot a rocket ship. The amount of confusion going on around those Mickey heads was staggering. The fact is, it IS a better way to enter the parks. But it does require some eagle eyed CMs to make sure no-one is sneaking in, and to help the less, bright? guests, enter the parks.

As for the park itself....

The new My Disney Experience app was better then expected for me. The wait times were really accurate, and the ability to check FP return times before trudging across the park was a helpful touch. The Dining portion of the app needs some work though. It would be nice if they would add Menu descriptions, instead of just the names of the dishes.

Flower and Garden had the park looking beautiful. All of the character topiaries are so cool. Especially the Cars shrubs. And the Troll in Norway, and Snow White, and the Lion King, and, well, you get it. The new Food booths were IMO a worthy edition, but the menus need tweaking. I like the idea behind having the new booths, but truthfully, there were very few items we were interested in trying. The ones we did try, BBQ in USA, Dole Whip w/rum, Beer Flight in Germany were all good though.

On to attractions...

Soarin' is atrocious at the moment. Is atrocious a strong enough adjective? I'm not sure. The queue is beat up and dirty(besides being a joke to begin with) no one watches or pays attention to the pre-show film, which means when you get onto the ride, many people can't even figure out the basics of wearing a seat belt. Now...the film....what can I say about it? It is in horrible condition. It is bordering on unwatchable at this point. A. It needs to be updated. B. It needs to be cleaned desperately. This will be the last trip we ride on Soarin', not worth the wait, even with a FP.

Test Track is a huge improvement. HUGE. I can't emphasize that enough. Everyone should make an effort to see this new version, I dare you not to be impressed. This attraction was a must skip for us the last few times down to WDW. Now it is a must do. Someone alert Stacy.

Spaceship Earth was in good working order. Rome was burning, smelled burny. Most AAs were working fine, descent is silly. Quick story about my trip through time. A group in front of me, maybe by four vehicles was using a flash light in the ride. Not joking. They were actually using a flashlight to point to dark areas of the attraction. It was infuriating. They also had an Ipad? or a netbook? or something of that ilk, open for the entire ride. I wish Disney did more to curb this type of behavior. One example of many, that the quality of guest in WDW can be really quite low.

Didn't bother with the Imagination pavilion, not that anyone seems to. It was a ghost town every time we passed.

The Seas were the seas. Everything was working though, which was a nice change. And no-one felt the need to use a flashlight in there, which was also pretty great.

Had lunch at Tutto Gusto. It was okay. The food options are a little fancy pants, but quite tasty. The big downside? The prices. It was incredibly expensive, even for a theme park. I'm talking $50+ for a half bottle of wine, the cheapest on the list no less, and the worlds tiniest sandwich. It was also jam packed, and one table was a group of young 20 somethings celebrating a birthday in the most obnoxious way imaginable. They brought the noise level from an enjoyable 5 or 6, to an ear splitting 9 or 10. To the managers credit though, he asked them to quiet down once, and when he was promptly ignored, he asked them to leave. So, good job by him.

Toured the WS after lunch. Great experience as always. The place is in immaculate condition(not counting the attractions which we skipped this trip) Tried a few drinks from the new booths, and just generally enjoyed taking in the atmosphere. We had dinner at R&C and secured an Illuminations view table. Cottage pie, and Black & Tans with a front row view of Illuminations, hard to beat that for an evening out.

On EE - have they given up on stick bird? I've kind of wondered if they decided that effect was to ridiculous. I really hope that the netting isn't permanent. The ToL is my favorite icon.

Firstly, screed? Excellent use of a very obscure word.

Those nets look VERY permanent to me. And it really is an eyesore. Viewed in and of itself, they look okay I guess. But the problem is, they completely obscure the ToL. I wish I had taken a picture.

@xdan0920 - I saw the nets last Thanksgiving...I suppose if I had mentioned that you wouldn't have gotten the pic and all, so it is all good. It just hadn't occurred to me that they could become permanent. They are really serious nets, so it is a possibility. After typing the period at the end of the last sentence, I did a quick search and the nets have been up since June of 2012 (earliest pics I could find)....bad sign. I find pics on Tom Corless' site and he actually "wasn't sure" if it ruined the view.

We were there end of April 2012 and some of the nets were already up then. Part of the area was tarped off as well, if I remember correctly. They completely ruin the atmosphere of what used to be one of the most beautiful and serene areas of the World. They're godawful.

One Little Spark...
This will sound odd, but I've been to AK every year since 2010, and I've never found myself in awe of the majesty of this tree, unlike other Parks.

Heck, I even find the hat at HS more majestic.

I feel like I missed out on something...

You're right, I wouldn't have. lol.

It looked might permanent to me. I'm not net expert though. Maybe I should become one.

Wasn't sure? That's just nuts. The view is ruined, 100%. I don't even see a way of taking the other side of the argument. The meshing is pretty tight, and the roping pretty thick. It is a major impediment to the view of the ToL. Terrible job by the mouse on this one.

AGREE 110%. Yep, I went for the extra 10%. I was incensed by these nets. Still am.

Not being in awe of the tree is okay, I disagree, I think it is some of WDI's finest work. However, placing BAH above it, them's fightin words.

Day 5...

MK rope drop...Main Street looks AWESOME. We could smell the fresh paint in the morning, the facades looked gorgeous, clean, fresh, beautiful. Really did a great job setting the mood. You could spend an hour just soaking it in.

Onto the attractions, both good and bad here...

Space Mountain is such a fun ride. DL's is obviously a better experience at this point, but MK's is no slouch, and I continue to enjoy it, even if the sound effects are a bit off most of the time. Oh, one thing I just remembered, that I REALLY do not like. In the queue, right after the merge point, they send you into these un-themed blue painted hallways. What the *bleep* is that about?

Now for the bad in TL. Buzz is in horrible shape. From the queue right on through the attraction itself. I have literally nothing good to say about it. It needs to be shut down and fixed, top to bottom. It is so far below show quality that it's not even worth talking about. Indefensible.

Moving through the park, FL is looking okay. Pooh looks good, Philharmagic needs a refurb but the show itself is so good, Small World was looking very good.

Tangled toilets are very nice. Didn't see a single person using the "charging stations" though. All the moving water is wonderful, I wish it would carry to the rest of the park though. Too many fountains have been shuttered, especially in Adventure Land, I mean the "Fountain of Fortune", is nothing more then a flower bed. It would be funny if it wasn't so annoying.

Splash Mountain was looking great, everything was clean, freshly painted, and working. Seeing the jumping water in the laughing place literally made my trip. The only issue I saw was Hopping Brer Rabbit, which didn't work once in the 3 days and 5 ride throughs I had. Which is sort of inexcusable considering the ride just re-opened. Hopefully it's back up an running now.

BTMRR, I actually like the queue additions. They were fun, and well done. Added a nice dynamic to the attraction. Though, I fear they will break quickly thanks to the previously mentioned low class guests beating on them. None of the geysers were working either, not sure if I got unlucky the 3 times I rode, or if they are just turned off.

Pirates, HM are looking pretty decent. Jungle Cruise needs a freshening up, but I got a great skipper, and that's really what makes or breaks the ride. I wish I had gotten her name, because she deserved some extra recognition. We got stalled at the unload and she had to reach down deep into her bag of jokes to keep us entertained, and she did. Very fun.

The whole New FL is kind of underwhelming. It's hard to get a feel for the finished project because of the huge amount of construction still going on. Will withhold judgement. BOG was great, and Gaston's is very nice as well. Mmmmmmm CInnamon Rolls.... But LM is the main attraction, and it is no main attraction. However, the mine train looks quite large, and seems to hold some promise. I know it's not going to be an E-ticket, but if it can become a D, then this "expansion" will be an overall win in my book. Aside from....

StoryBook Circus is pretty bad. Just not an appealing area, and that Casey Jr area made me a little ill just looking at it. I will be avoiding this area of the park with extreme prejudice going forward. On a scale of 1-10, I'd give this area a rating of SGE.

HA! I love the rating system. On a scale of 1-10, it gets a "Stitch" :) Lower than low.

You know what would make Storybook Circus better (brace yourself, this is a radical idea) - an actual small scale circus. Why not have multiple 20 minute shows throughout the day? Some magic, some trapeze, some comedy they really wouldn't even need real animals...Have Mickey emcee. MK could use another show or two. Really they should hire me, since they seem incapable of thinking of simple crap like this any more.
