I just saw a commercial for a new DVD coming out March 21 called The Adventures of Brer Rabbit. I guess this is as close as we'll come to owning Song of the South, huh?

Brer Rabbit was around long before Disney and will be long after Disney.. It is similar to Wizard of Oz... The concept cannot be used again, in other words, Universal could not do Song of the South.. but using these characters is not something that is exclusinve to Disney... However, I am sure Universal cannot use Brer Rabbit in an attraction... Please someone clarify this....

Did anyone else notice WAYNE BRADY is one of the voices?? Ohh and i just watched Song of the South.. I don't know what the big deal is... If this was such a racist story of Brer Rabbit, would black actors line up to do voice overs for The Adventures of Brer Rabbit?? I don't think so.... Universal is taking advantage of Song of the South's 60th anniversary.. It is a shame Disney isn't... Bob Iger, if you are readign this, reverse your decision and RELEASE THIS DISNEY CLASSIC ON DVD!!!!!!!!! Universal has the guts, Bob Iger, DO YOU????

One other thing, if you all remember, Cinderella, Pinocchio, Snow White, and Sleeping Beauty all appeared in Shrek... And will have more roles in the next Shrek movie... So these names and characters are not Disney exclusive.. However, if Universal uses the same exact replica of these characters, then it is infringement.. not just using the name...

Goth Mickey, where did you get your "Song of the South"? I just talked to the Disney Movie clerks Friday and they informed me that they have no info on a release of this movie in the United States now, future or ever. I know that I can purchase a DVD on e-bay but it is a boot-leg copy from the United Kingdom, and I am afraid it will not be as up to par as one in the United States. Again, Where? Thanks, BigNormsMom.:brick:

As you can see from my Avatar & name, Song of the South has a special place in my heart. By the way for many of you too young to have seen the movie TEENCHY is the dogs name, pictured in my Avatar w/ Uncle Remus.

This looks like a terrible rip off of Brer Rabbit, but thats Hollywood for you. I also hope its horrible but unfortunatley kids today will have nothing to compare it to. I have posted before that I wonder how many people love Splash Mountain but never have had the chance to see the movie that inspired such a great ride.

In Europe they had SOS on the old laser disk format which is how I got my cherished copy.

I apoligze for my ignorance but I also have never been sure why people find this movie offensive?. Unless they also consider Gone with the Wind and other movies objectionable that depict slavery. I know that as a kid I loved Uncle Remus and color never entered into my mind when I watched the movie. I have always held out hope that when we got to the anniversary of Song of the South that maybe someone would have the guts to release the real movie on DVD. So everyone could enjoy this great movie and the amazing real life and cartoon interaction, lifetimes before Roger Rabbit. But I'm sure the P.C. police will never let it happen.

I think I may have to go home tonight and watch my copy to get that horrible image of that new Brer Rabbit out of my mind!

That's really quite creepy...espically consdidering Wayne Brady was an original WDW actor.

I am both dissappointed and respectful of Walt Disney Company's Decision to not release SotS. I have never seen it, with the exception of the Brer Rabbit Parts. I would really love to see it sometime, but know that might not be possible. Personally, I think the nation overreacts sometimes, whether you approve or disapprove slavery, it is a part of our history, which we can't ignore, so stop trying to. Just like Light Magic is a part of DL's history, try as you might to ignore it's existance, it was an actual parade, and it does continue to be brought up. These films are also a part of our history as a nation so we should not try to pretend they weren't made, because they were, and they were popular. Just my opinion.

To be honest, people probably won't even associate this with Disney. They will look at it and be like...."I will buy this for my child so that they leave me alone."

Scary...but there's also some truth in there. They will recognize the name...some of which may identify it with Disney while other identify it with the books or whatever these characters actually come from - it is a book, right?

I also doubt that this movie will put any pressure on Disney to release it's version. It's a direct-to-video and the animation will probably be television quality and not feature quality.

GothMickey is right tho', just because Disney has developed their own seperate version of Cinderella, Pinocchio, etc. - these characters are not Disney characters by any means. They were created many years before Walt was alive and were heard by children all over the world. People just assume that they are Disney because that's what they are used to seeing their name attached to... Go to your local Toys R Us and browse through their cheapy movies...they've got cartoons for Aladdin, Beauty and the Beast, Little Mermaid - none of them are Disney. After so many years, literature, movies, etc. become public domain and anyone can use a likeness or a character however they choose. Disney and Warner Bros. keep lobbying congress to extend the copyright laws on characters due to the fact that Mickey Mouse and Bugs Bunny are already that old...and Congress has twice extended the time frame for these laws...but eventually, time will win and people will be free to use those 2 famous icons.

Tho', I do think that if Universal wanted to create an attraction about Brer Rabbit in one of their parks (tho' highly unlikely) they could do it. They just cannot use the Disney Brer Rabbit - they can however use their version in an attraction. I don't think that Universal is actually planning anything like this tho'. This is just another direct-to-video release for them...nothing new, just ordinary business.

I bought my copy on Ebay. It was a copy from the original VHS version from what I can tell. I does however have a really nice case and the disc was printed. Who ever was doing it did a very professional job. It came from canada.

This is the only way we can see one of the greatest Disney movies. I do hope they eventually update and rerelease it someday.
